Deleting one does not necessarily remove the others.
Provider controls also vary by country, account type, feature rollout, and whether an employer or school manages the account. Use the route that matches the specific copy of your information.

Identify the copy of your information first
Before deleting anything, decide which of these situations applies:
- Conversation or activity history: the prompts and replies saved in a chat list or activity log.
- Saved memory or profile data: information the service stores to personalize later responses, or details in your account profile.
- An inaccurate generated answer: a response that states personal information incorrectly. Correcting the response is different from changing the source record behind it.
- Connected-source data: information Gemini or another assistant can reach through a linked app or service. The source app may retain the original even after a chat is deleted.
Privacy laws may give you access, deletion, correction, objection, or appeal rights, but those rights are jurisdiction-specific and can have legal, security, contractual, or fraud-prevention exceptions. Provider settings are practical controls, not universal legal advice.

How the three services handle removal and correction

ChatGPT: delete chats, clear Memory, or submit a privacy request
Delete a conversation from chat history
- Open ChatGPT and locate the conversation in your chat list.
- Use the conversation’s delete control and confirm the deletion.
- Check the history list again to make sure the chat is no longer displayed.
Deleting the chat is the action that removes its content from your chat history. It is separate from the model-improvement control. If you switch off Improve the model for everyone, OpenAI says new conversations will not be used to train its models, but saved chats remain in history until you delete them.
Remove information saved as Memory
ChatGPT Memory is a separate store used to personalize replies. Open ChatGPT settings, review the Memory controls, and remove the saved item that contains your personal information. Deleting the conversation that originally supplied the detail does not automatically delete a memory created from it, so perform both actions when you need both copies removed.
Request access or deletion from OpenAI
For a broader data request, use the OpenAI Privacy Portal linked from OpenAI’s Privacy Center. This is the appropriate route when you need access to personal data, deletion beyond individual chats, or a formal privacy-rights request.

Account deletion is permanent and affects associated data and subscriptions. If the account belongs to a managed work or school workspace, self-service deletion may not be available; contact the workspace owner or administrator instead.

Available settings can differ according to whether you are signed in, your plan, workspace policy, and feature rollout. The Privacy Center rollout described by OpenAI covers specified consumer and Business users, not Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspaces in that rollout.
Gemini: manage activity, Memory, connected apps, and inaccurate answers
Delete Gemini Apps Activity
- Open your Google account’s Gemini Apps Activity page.
- Review the recorded prompts and responses.
- Choose whether to delete one item, a single day, a custom date range, or all activity.
- Review the Keep Activity setting and choose whether future activity should be saved.
For adult personal accounts, Keep Activity is on by default. When it is off, Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process feedback. Turning it off therefore limits ongoing activity storage; it is not an instant purge of every temporary copy.
Gemini Apps Activity has an 18-month default auto-delete period. Google says you can change that period to three months or 36 months, or disable auto-delete. Deleting Gemini activity does not delete information stored in other Google services.
Correct or remove what Gemini remembers
If Gemini remembered a personal detail from earlier chats, Google’s guidance is to delete every chat that contains that information. To correct what Gemini knows and uses in a response, turn Memory on and correct Gemini directly in the conversation. Google cautions that Gemini may not always get the correction right, so verify later responses rather than assuming the change is perfect.

Handle connected applications
When the information came from a connected app, do both parts of the cleanup: delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect the app. Google says performing only one can leave the information accessible through the other source. Changes to a connected app may take days to affect the Gemini experience.
Report an inaccurate personal-data response
Google documents two routes for inaccurate personal data appearing in Gemini responses:
- Submit the request through the relevant Google Help Center form.
- In Gemini, open More > Report legal issue and follow the reporting steps.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub notes that “LLM experiences (Gemini Apps included) can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual.” A report can request correction or object to processing where applicable law provides that right, including under the GDPR. It is not a promise that every generated error can be edited or removed on demand.
Understand Gemini’s retention exceptions
Google says data associated with chats reviewed by human reviewers can be retained for up to three years and is not deleted when you delete Gemini activity. That retention period is different from the 18-month activity auto-delete setting. These retained review records and information in other Google services may therefore outlast the activity visible in your account.

Perplexity: edit your profile or make a formal privacy request
Correct profile information
Perplexity says most of its services let users change account-profile information directly. Open the profile or account settings and edit the inaccurate field when that function is available.
If the service does not provide an update or correction control for the information at issue, Perplexity’s Privacy Notice says to contact the company and request correction of the inaccuracy. Describe exactly what is wrong, provide the corrected value, and identify the account associated with the request.
Request access or deletion
Perplexity’s Privacy Notice describes requests for access to or deletion of personal data where applicable. Submit the data-privacy form linked from that notice or contact [email protected]. Perplexity says it may verify your identity for most requests.

The notice also describes an appeal route and an EU/UK representative. A request can be limited by legal obligations, disputes, agreements, or other permitted purposes, so deletion is not absolute in every circumstance.
Allow for backups and processing time
Perplexity’s notice says historical information may remain in backups where permitted by law. Do not assume that a successful account action means every backup copy disappears immediately or that all systems update at once.
What to do when the information is in more than one place
Use this sequence when a personal detail appears in a response and may also exist in history, memory, or a source app:
- Save a copy of the inaccurate statement and note when and where it appeared.
- Delete the relevant conversation or activity record.
- Remove the separate Memory or profile entry, if the service has one.
- Correct or delete the record in the connected source application.
- Submit the provider’s privacy or legal-issue request when the information remains inaccurate or inaccessible through normal controls.
- Keep confirmation emails, request numbers, and the date of each action in case you need to appeal.
This order separates the visible chat from the underlying personal-data source. A correction to an AI-generated response does not automatically rewrite a government record, a public webpage, a contact database, or a connected application.

Work, school, and regional account limits
Managed accounts can expose different controls from personal accounts. Google Workspace administrators may control Gemini activity settings, while OpenAI workspace owners can control or perform actions unavailable to individual users. Check the organization’s policy or contact its administrator before assuming a consumer setting applies.
Privacy-rights procedures also depend on where you live. A provider may ask for identity verification, apply a statutory deadline, retain data needed for legal claims, or deny a request that conflicts with another person’s rights or a security obligation. If a request is denied, use the provider’s documented appeal route or the regulator available in your jurisdiction.
