Fixing Owlboy crashes on Steam or PC

Check whether the historical patch matches the crash
In a May 25, 2022 announcement, D-Pad Studio said a patch fixed a crash that could occur while backtracking and prevent players from returning to the final dungeon. The studio added that the patch might address other crash or stability issues on some PCs. This is a description of that release, not a guarantee that it resolves every crash. Consider the original version only for persistent Steam crashes
In a separate May 4, 2022 announcement, D-Pad Studio said Steam players still experiencing crashes could launch the original XNA-based version from before the 2022 update. The announcement described choosing “Play Owlboy” for the current version or “Play Owlboy (original version)” for the older version when starting the game from Steam. Treat this as a historical Steam-specific diagnostic or workaround option, not a guaranteed repair; the announcement does not establish that the choice is available on GOG or consoles. Escalate unresolved PC problems through official support
If updating and the historically documented Steam options do not help, contact D-Pad Studio through the Owlboy Steam support page. Include your operating system, where the crash occurs, and the game version shown by your storefront. Steam lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux; meeting a storefront’s minimum requirements does not guarantee crash-free play.
Check missing or unreadable Owlboy saves on Nintendo Switch
The steps below are Nintendo’s general Switch guidance for missing or corrupted save data, not Owlboy-specific recovery instructions. Before changing users or accounts, note that Nintendo says save data is tied to each user account; deleting a user account deletes that user’s associated save data. Nintendo’s save-data troubleshooting instructions explain the available checks.

- Check for a Nintendo Switch system update and an Owlboy software update using the console’s normal update options.
- Open System Settings, go to Data Management, and use the option to check Owlboy for corrupt data.
- Confirm that the console is using the user account that owns the save.
- If Owlboy supports Save Data Cloud for that account and the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, follow Nintendo’s instructions to download an eligible backup.
Cloud recovery is conditional: it depends on cloud-save support for the game and account, membership, and an available backup. These steps do not promise that a deleted or missing save can be restored.

What to do when an Owlboy update fails
The May 2022 announcements document Steam changes, but the available information does not confirm current Owlboy version numbers, present Switch patch status, or update procedures for every storefront. Use the platform’s own update mechanism rather than relying on a version number or procedure from another platform.

- Retry the update through the official storefront or console update interface.
- If the update still fails, contact D-Pad Studio using the official Owlboy support route listed by Steam, or seek help from the platform provider.
Avoid uninstalling the game, overwriting saves, or editing save files unless the relevant platform or developer provides a verified procedure for your case. The available sources do not establish safe, platform-specific steps for those actions.
