If your Osmo Pocket 3 feels hot or stops recording, first check whether heat or the microSD card is responsible: heat can be normal during demanding recording, but a stopped clip is not automatically a thermal shutdown. Reduce recording load and let a hot camera cool; for interruptions, check card capacity and compatibility, back up footage before formatting, then update the camera and DJI Mimo. Persistent overheating stops or failures need DJI Support.
Is Osmo Pocket 3 warmth normal?
The Pocket 3 processes and encodes video while its sensor is capturing footage, and its battery supplies power in a compact body with limited room to dissipate heat. DJI says the camera can become warm during use. Warmth alone does not establish a fault, but repeated thermal shutdowns—particularly during short recording sessions—warrant follow-up. DJI’s overheating guidance advises contacting Support if the automatic overheating stop appears frequently.

Reduce heat during a recording session
- Keep the gimbal and the heat-dissipation area at the top uncovered. Avoid extended direct sunlight and high ambient temperatures.
- For a long fixed shot, leave room for air to circulate. Holding the camera below the screen area may be more comfortable and helps avoid covering hotter areas; this is handling advice, not a cooling repair. DJI lists an optional Osmo Pocket 3 Handle With 1/4-inch Thread, but an accessory handle is not a fix for overheating.
- If the shot does not require maximum detail or motion smoothness, lower the resolution, frame rate, or both. Higher-demand recording can generate more heat.
- Set the screen to turn off sooner while recording. In the screen settings, “Scrn Off When Rec” offers 3-, 15-, and 30-second choices; DJI suggests these intervals to help alleviate heat.
- Avoid recording while charging unless you need external power. DJI says the camera draws power directly from the power input while recording and charges its internal battery only after recording stops.
- After activation, a firmware update, or charging, let the camera return to room temperature before using it if it heated during setup. If the camera is already hot, power it off and allow it to cool before starting another session.
DJI describes one narrowly defined case: in Europe or before activation, standalone 4K/120 fps recording at 25°C with a compatible listed card may stop after 18 minutes. That timing is not a general limit for all regions, recording modes, or Pocket 3 units.

Why does my Pocket 3 stop recording?
A recording interruption can result from an SD-card error, an incompatible or damaged card, or a full card—not just overheating. DJI’s troubleshooting addresses recordings that stop after a few seconds or a few minutes. Work through the card checks before assuming the camera has a thermal or hardware problem.
- Check card capacity and compatibility. Confirm the card is not full or damaged and compare its model, capacity, and speed class with DJI’s current Pocket 3 specifications and recommended-card information. DJI lists support for cards up to 1 TB and the exFAT file system. Its guidance warns that cards outside the compatibility list or with lower speeds can aggravate heat during recording; use DJI’s list rather than treating a speed marking alone as a compatibility guarantee. DJI suggests compatible cards or high-speed U30/A2 cards.
- Back up footage, then format the card in DJI Mimo. Formatting erases the card, so copy any recordings you want to keep first. Use DJI Mimo to format a compatible card; if available, test with a second compatible card. See DJI’s recording troubleshooting guidance.
- Check for heat-related interruption. If the camera is hot, lower the resolution or frame rate and power it off to cool before trying again.
- Update the app and camera firmware. Update DJI Mimo and follow the official camera firmware prompts and instructions. The DJI downloads page lists a User Manual v1.0 dated 2023-10-25 and Release Notes dated 2025-08-26; those listings do not show which firmware is installed on your camera.
- Escalate if the problem persists. If a compatible card, formatting, and firmware checks do not resolve the interruption, contact DJI Support.
A file split is not necessarily an interruption: DJI says the camera automatically splits a recording near 16 GB without damaging its quality. If a new file appears during a long recording but capture continues, that behavior is different from recording stopping.

What to do about Osmo Pocket 3 battery drain
DJI’s published operating-time figure is a reference point, not a promise of runtime in every recording setup. The company reports 166 minutes at 25°C/77°F while recording 1080p/24 fps (16:9), with Wi-Fi and the screen off, and labels the result “for reference only.” Screen use, wireless functions, recording mode, temperature, and charging conditions differ in everyday use, so the figure cannot by itself establish whether an individual battery is faulty.

To make a useful comparison, note the recording mode, how long the screen and Wi-Fi are on, the ambient conditions, whether the camera is hot, and approximately how long it runs. If the drain remains abnormal under your usual conditions, or the camera also behaves unusually, contact DJI Support. DJI’s general documentation does not provide a symptom-specific procedure that can diagnose an individual battery’s abnormal drain.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose settings and cards for the shot
For longer recording sessions, balance footage requirements against heat and storage reliability. Lower resolution or frame rate when the shot permits; retain the settings needed for the footage when it does not. For recording media, compare the exact card model, capacity, and speed class with DJI’s current recommended-card list. A compatible card can address storage-related stops, but it will not resolve a thermal shutdown caused by heat.
