Start by checking whether Opera VPN is available and switched on in your version of Opera. Then identify whether the problem is a missing VPN control, a connection that appears active but fails to load pages, or one site behaving differently. Opera’s built-in VPN is a browser feature, not a device-wide VPN, so it does not automatically cover other apps.
Why is Opera VPN not connecting?
The right troubleshooting step depends on what you see: VPN may be missing from settings, the switch may be off, or a particular page may fail while VPN is on. First confirm your platform and locate the feature in Opera; then test whether the issue is limited to a page or browser setting.

Find VPN in Opera for desktop
In desktop Opera, open Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > VPN and enable it. You can also use the VPN badge beside the combined address and search field. Opera’s FAQ lists Settings > Features > VPN; the route and labels can differ by version. The badge can show the on/off control, data transferred, virtual location, and virtual IP. Why can’t I see VPN in Opera settings on Android?
Open the Opera menu and check Settings, or look for the VPN control on the start page while in Private mode. Opera says availability can depend on country and browser version; in some cases VPN appears only in Private mode. That can explain a missing control without indicating a temporary outage. Opera’s Android VPN FAQ covers availability and setup.

Enable VPN in Opera Browser for iOS
Tap the three-dot menu, open Settings > VPN, and switch VPN on. If iOS asks Opera for permission to add VPN configurations, approve the system prompt. Then select a virtual location and connect. See Opera’s iOS VPN setup instructions.
Check for settings that affect what VPN covers
Turn off Data savings before testing on Android
Opera’s Android Data savings feature and VPN cannot be connected at the same time because both use proxy features. Turn off Data savings, then try VPN again. They are not interchangeable: Opera says Data savings does not hide your IP address. Also, not every Opera feature necessarily uses the proxy; Opera notes that the built-in news feature on the start page is not proxied.

Check default search bypass on desktop
If VPN seems to switch off when you search, check whether Bypass VPN for default search engines is enabled. Opera says default search traffic may then use your actual location, while VPN resumes when you navigate to a web page. Opera does not support this setting in Private Mode.

Opera describes its desktop VPN as routing browser traffic through Opera VPN servers. Do not expect it to protect traffic from every app on your computer or phone. If you need VPN coverage beyond Opera browsing, that is a separate need—not a repair for the browser feature.

If a page fails, isolate the browsing problem
A VPN connection and a page-loading failure are not necessarily the same problem. Opera recommends comparing the page with VPN disabled, trying a Private window, clearing cache and cookies, and updating Opera. These checks can help narrow down the symptom; they do not establish a single cause or guarantee a fix.
- Compare with VPN off. Turn VPN off and reopen the same page. Note whether it loads only with VPN off, only with VPN on, or neither way.
- Try a Private window. Open the same page in a Private window to check whether the result changes.
- Clear cache and cookies. Use Opera’s browser data controls, then try the page again. This may sign you out of sites or remove saved site data.
- Update Opera. On desktop, open Menu > Update & Recovery > Check for Update. Opera downloads updates automatically; relaunching completes an update. For Android or iOS, check for an Opera update using the app-update route available on your device.
- Try another virtual location, if available. If the page still behaves differently only with VPN enabled, compare another location. Treat the result as a diagnostic, not proof that a particular location is the cause.

Update, recover, or reinstall desktop Opera
If desktop VPN remains unavailable or Opera itself is malfunctioning after the checks above, use Opera’s maintenance options in order. Recovery and clean installation can affect personal browser data, so do not begin with the most disruptive option.
Use Opera’s Recover option
Open Menu > Update & Recovery and choose Recover. Opera offers recovery choices that can keep personal data while resetting settings, or reset Opera and data more broadly. Read the on-screen description before confirming: the broader option can remove personal browser information.

Reserve a clean installation for last
Opera advises backing up Opera files before a clean installation. Its documented sequence is to back up the files, uninstall Opera, delete profile data, download the latest version, and reinstall. Deleting profile data can remove personal browser information, so ensure the backup is usable before proceeding. These steps are for desktop Opera; do not apply desktop file instructions to Android or iOS.
Report a persistent issue
If VPN still does not work, report the issue to Opera. Include your platform and Opera version, whether VPN is missing or enabled, whether all sites or only one fail, and what changed when you tested with VPN off or in a Private window. Opera’s crashes and issues help page covers updating, recovery, clean installation, and reporting.
What these fixes can—and cannot—establish
Opera’s support guidance provides configuration and troubleshooting steps, not a universal cause or guaranteed fix. A missing Android control may be an availability difference tied to country or version; a failing page may behave differently with VPN off; and a desktop recovery may address broader browser trouble. None of those outcomes by itself proves that Opera’s VPN servers are down or that a device-wide VPN product will repair Opera.
