If your OLED laptop visibly flickers, first check whether the problem is a Windows app or graphics driver; if the display is stable but your eyes feel uncomfortable, adjust your viewing habits and reduce glare. OLED brightness-related flicker is model-specific, and a refresh-rate change is not an established fix for it.
First identify what kind of problem you have
A screen that visibly flashes, tears, or scrambles is different from a screen that looks normal but feels uncomfortable to use. Windows can help narrow down software-related flicker. Eye discomfort may instead be associated with prolonged near work, reduced blinking, glare, or an uncorrected vision problem.

- Visible flicker or image scrambling: use Task Manager to check whether the issue is likely tied to an app or display driver.
- Discomfort without a visible fault: try changes to breaks, distance, screen position, brightness, and glare.
- Flicker that tracks brightness or persists outside Windows: note the laptop model and conditions, then check the manufacturer’s guidance for that exact device. The available evidence does not establish which OLED laptops use PWM or what model-specific controls may help.
Diagnose Windows flicker with Task Manager
- Open Task Manager while the rest of the screen is flickering. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Watch whether Task Manager flickers too. Microsoft says that if it flickers along with the rest of the display, a display driver is probably causing the problem. If Task Manager remains stable while other content flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. See Microsoft’s Windows flicker troubleshooting guidance.
Try Windows fixes for an app or driver problem
These steps address Windows software and driver causes; they cannot be assumed to correct brightness modulation or a panel-level fault.
- Reset the graphics driver: press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. The display may briefly go blank or beep as Windows attempts to reset the graphics driver.
- Restart the laptop. A restart can clear a temporary display problem.
- Update or roll back the display driver. If flicker started after a recent update, rolling back may be worth trying. The laptop or display-adapter manufacturer may provide the appropriate driver for your device.
- Reinstall the display driver if needed. Microsoft lists uninstalling and reinstalling it as a troubleshooting option.
- Update or remove a recently installed app. If Task Manager stays stable during the flicker, focus on apps that were recently installed or updated, or that are open when the problem occurs.
If flicker continues across apps or outside Windows, record the laptop’s make and model, when the flicker occurs, and the brightness level. Contact the laptop maker for model-specific guidance rather than assuming a general Windows setting can repair the panel.

Check refresh rate, but don’t treat it as an OLED flicker cure
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and review the refresh rates offered for the selected display. Windows shows rates supported by that display; available choices vary by device. A higher supported rate can make some movement, browsing, or inking look smoother, and Microsoft discusses flicker and ghosting in that context. The guidance does not establish that changing refresh rate fixes OLED PWM brightness flicker. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions and its Windows display engineering guidance.
Do not try to force an unsupported rate. Microsoft’s engineering guidance describes supported rates as ones the system expects the panel to run without adverse effects such as flicker; that is not a claim that refresh rate controls OLED brightness modulation.

Reduce eye discomfort during laptop use
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) links common temporary digital eye discomfort with prolonged screen use and reduced blinking. Its practical suggestions focus on how and where you use the screen:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Take occasional distance breaks. Look at a distant object rather than continuing to focus close up.
- Set a comfortable viewing distance. AAO suggests about 25 inches, or roughly an arm’s length, if that is comfortable for you.
- Position the display slightly below eye level. This lets your gaze angle slightly downward.
- Reduce distracting glare. Adjust the screen’s position, nearby lighting, brightness, and contrast. AAO also notes that dimming lighting near the screen can help reduce eye strain.
AAO’s Digital Devices and Your Eyes guidance explains that people may blink less during prolonged screen use, which can leave eyes dry or uncomfortable. These changes address common sources of discomfort; they do not establish that the OLED panel itself is causing symptoms.

Use blue-light glasses only if you want them for another reason
AAO says, “Digital eye discomfort is not caused by blue light,” and does not recommend spending extra on special blue-light-blocking glasses for computer use. Its advice instead emphasizes breaks, screen brightness and contrast, and glare reduction. See AAO’s guidance on blue light.

A matte laptop screen filter may help reduce reflections on a glossy display. It is an optional glare accessory, not a fix for OLED flicker or a general treatment for eye strain. Before choosing one, check the exact laptop’s screen dimensions and aspect ratio, whether you need touchscreen functions, and whether the filter’s effect on clarity is acceptable. AAO discusses glare reduction in its screen-use guidance.

Know when to seek an eye-care evaluation
Digital eye strain describes a group of eye- and vision-related problems associated with extended use of digital devices. The American Optometric Association notes that uncorrected vision issues, including farsightedness or astigmatism, can contribute. If discomfort or blurred vision persists despite changing your setup and habits, arrange a comprehensive eye exam to assess whether a vision issue is involved. See the AOA’s computer vision syndrome guidance.
