The crystals can penetrate the moist lining of your mouth and cause immediate burning and irritation. Only eat fruit that is fully ripe—and seek urgent medical attention for lip or tongue swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing.
What causes the burning?
University of Florida IFAS Extension identifies insoluble, needle-like calcium oxalate crystals as the main toxic agent described for Monstera deliciosa. These crystals can penetrate the oral mucous membranes, causing burning and irritation. Queensland’s Poisons Information Centre says all parts of the plant contain crystals, which can cause immediate pain and swelling if chewed or eaten.

This is crystal-related irritation, not a chemical burn from acid. The practical concern with the fruit is eating it before it has ripened fully, or eating sections that remain immature.

Ripening happens along the fruit, so separate sections may not be ready at the same time. Look for these signs rather than tasting a questionable piece:

- The tile-like scales at the base begin to separate; as ripening progresses, scales dry and fall away, exposing the off-white pulp.
- The pulp releases easily from the core. Eat only the sections that do; UF/IFAS warns that immature portions can cause severe discomfort if swallowed.
UF/IFAS says harvested fruit can be ripened at room temperature. Wrapping the whole fruit in paper, plastic, or aluminum foil can make ripening quicker and more even; the wrap is for ripening, not a way to make an unripe section safe to eat. Do not try a bite to check readiness.
What symptoms can occur?
After someone eats or chews plant material, Queensland’s poison center lists immediate burning pain and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. Swelling can cause excessive salivation and difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking. Nausea, abdominal pain, and intense stomach irritation are described as rare. North Carolina State Extension also lists possible nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, drooling, and diarrhea.

Ripe fruit is the appropriate stage for eating, but it is not a guarantee that everyone will tolerate it. Queensland’s poison center mentions hives or an itchy rash, and Singapore’s National Parks Board notes reports of symptoms in some people after ripe fruit. If you are uncertain about the plant or your reaction, do not eat it.

What to do after exposure
Seek urgent medical attention if lips or tongue become swollen, or if breathing or swallowing is difficult. For other suspected exposures, contact a local poison center or medical professional for advice suited to the person and situation; this general guidance is not an individualized treatment plan.

If a pet may have eaten Monstera, the ASPCA lists oral irritation, pain and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing as possible signs. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service.

Common names can overlap, so identify the plant rather than assuming that any plant called “Monstera” has edible fruit.
