How to Fix OBS “Encoding Overloaded” During a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop

A practical OBS troubleshooting path for 4K60 YouTube loops, from identifying rendering versus encoding pressure to testing YouTube bitrate and network settings.

OBS’s “encoding overloaded” warning means its rendering or encoding workload may be exceeding available system capacity; it does not, by itself, identify the CPU as the problem. Check OBS Stats and the current log first, then test reversible changes: free GPU capacity, simplify the scene, and reduce output resolution or frame rate one setting at a time. A 4K60 loop still has to be composed and encoded as a live output.

Find out whether rendering, encoding, or delivery is failing

OBS says an “encoding overloaded” warning and choppy output can result when resources need to be freed. Its troubleshooting guide identifies GPU overload and a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system as possible causes. OBS renders and composites scenes on the GPU, so the word “encoder” does not prove that the CPU is the sole bottleneck.

Before changing settings, open OBS Stats and inspect the current OBS log. Determine whether frames are being missed during rendering, skipped during encoding, or both. That distinction helps you choose a useful test; without your operating system, log, scene, encoder, and hardware details, the warning alone cannot diagnose the specific limit. See OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, published June 12, 2021.

Looping prerecorded video does not remove the live encoding workload: OBS still has to produce the selected output resolution and frame rate. OBS’s published guidance is general output-performance advice, not a special test of a 4K60 loop mode.

Fix the warning in a controlled order

Use the same representative section of your loop for each test. Change one variable at a time and check OBS Stats again so you can tell whether the change helped.

  1. On Windows, run OBS as administrator

Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and choose Run as administrator. OBS says Windows may reserve some GPU capacity for OBS and that this resolves GPU overload in many cases. This step applies to Windows only; do not treat it as a macOS fix.

  2. Free competing GPU resources

Close other programs you recognize that are using substantial GPU resources and reduce other GPU-heavy work. Check Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS to help identify competing applications. If you are gaming while streaming, OBS also recommends reducing the game’s graphics settings. Avoid ending unfamiliar system processes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Simplify the OBS scene

Remove sources, filters, and visual effects that are not needed for the stream, and reduce scene complexity where practical. Scene compositing consumes GPU resources. If the workload comes from an unnecessarily complex collection, simplify the relevant scenes or collections rather than assuming a different encoder will solve it.

  4. Test a lower output resolution, then frame rate

In OBS, open Settings → Video and test a lower output resolution. If 60fps remains unstable, test 30fps. Keep the loop and other conditions consistent while testing. If lowering the output resolves the problem, the original output workload was beyond what the system could sustain under those conditions; it does not establish which component alone was responsible.

Lowering the base (canvas) resolution is more disruptive because it can complicate capture and asset positioning. OBS recommends doing that only when GPU resources are severely constrained.

  5. Review the encoder and hardware support

OBS generally recommends supported hardware encoding to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized video-encoding component. Its guidance covers NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox, with platform and hardware caveats. Check which encoder your hardware and OBS version support, keep GPU drivers current, and compare performance using OBS Stats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware encoding is not a universal cure. If rendering is already GPU-bound, moving encoding to a GPU-based encoder may not create the headroom you need; freeing GPU capacity or reducing output workload may matter more. Read OBS’s Hardware Encoding guidance, published January 11, 2022.

  6. Run a YouTube preflight after OBS is stable

Once local rendering and encoding are behaving, test delivery to YouTube separately. Use representative motion and audio, check the stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm that your upload connection can sustain the total bitrate with headroom. Network trouble can interrupt delivery, but it does not on its own explain an OBS encoding-overloaded warning.

Set YouTube’s 4K60 live output correctly

YouTube’s current live encoder settings page lists these ingest bitrate values for 4K/2160p at 60fps. They are YouTube recommendations for receiving the stream, not evidence that a particular computer can encode it or that a connection can upload it continuously.

Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These figures are from Google / YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page, retrieved October 3, 2026. They are live-stream ingest recommendations, not YouTube’s separate recommended upload bitrates for prerecorded videos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Protocol and codec: YouTube specifies RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose a codec supported by both your encoder and YouTube.
  • Rate control: Use CBR, as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • Latency: At 4K/2160p, YouTube says the low-latency optimization option is unavailable and streams are set to normal latency.

For exact codec and resolution settings, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings page, since supported options and labels may change.

Check upload capacity independently

YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Measure upload capacity on the network you will actually use: download speed is not a substitute, and other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. If you send primary and backup streams, account for both in the total.

A suitable upload rate can prevent network-related delivery problems, but it cannot make an overloaded local rendering or encoding workload sustainable. YouTube’s Streaming tips page explains network preparation and stream-health checks.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next Practical response
OBS Stats shows missed frames during rendering GPU pressure from scene composition, sources, filters, games, or other applications Free GPU capacity, simplify scenes, or test lower output resolution or frame rate.
OBS Stats shows skipped frames during encoding Encoder choice, hardware support, driver state, and the selected output workload Check supported hardware encoding and drivers; test lower output settings and compare Stats.
OBS’s local output is stable, but YouTube reports stream-health or connection trouble Upload capacity, shared network use, and total stream bitrate Test the actual upload connection, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and inspect Live Control Room stream health.
The warning persists after selecting a hardware encoder Whether rendering is GPU-bound or the GPU is under pressure from other work Do not assume the encoder change failed in isolation; inspect Stats, reduce competing GPU work, and test output settings.
Reducing the canvas causes sources or assets to shift Base (canvas) resolution and scene layout Restore the canvas if needed; prefer testing output resolution first unless GPU resources are severely constrained.

When a hardware upgrade is worth considering

Do not buy a graphics card, capture card, router, or cooling product based on this warning alone. First check the OBS log, Stats, current hardware, and supported encoder options. A GPU with an OBS-supported hardware video encoder may be relevant if evidence shows that the existing encoder capability or available encoding capacity is the constraint. For a compatible NVIDIA system, that may mean checking NVENC; for other systems, check the supported AMD, Intel, or Apple option. Without the system details and measured bottleneck, there is no basis to rank specific GPU models or promise that a purchase will fix the warning.
