Idle means your AWS Elemental MediaLive channel is not running. To start it, open MediaLive → Channels, select the intended channel, and choose Start. First confirm that its input is ready and its output has the stream URL and key shown for the correct YouTube stream. Then watch MediaLive move from Starting to Running, check YouTube’s preview, and—if the event is scheduled—select Go live in YouTube Live Control Room.
What Idle means in MediaLive
AWS defines the Idle channel state as “The channel isn’t running.” Idle is a state, not by itself an error, and it does not identify why a particular channel is idle. AWS says a channel must be started manually; it does not start automatically except when it is already running and trying to recover from a failure. See the AWS MediaLive channel-state reference.

An Idle channel may still incur charges. AWS documents charges for idle channels, and an attached push input may also incur idle input charges while its channel is stopped. Check AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing for current regional pricing and verify the channel and input configuration before estimating cost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare the input and YouTube destination
Confirm the source and selected input
Before starting, make sure the channel is configured for the intended source. If it uses a push input, the source must already be pushing to MediaLive before the channel starts. If the channel has multiple inputs, inspect its schedule and input attachment order so it starts with the intended one; AWS recommends using the schedule to select inputs. Refer to AWS instructions for starting and stopping a channel.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Do not confuse a MediaLive RTMP push input with the RTMP output sent to YouTube. The input is how an upstream source sends media into MediaLive; the output destination is where MediaLive sends the encoded stream. AWS explains the push-input behavior in its RTMP push input documentation.
Copy the destination values from the intended YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select or create the intended stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key in Live Control Room, after which you must update the MediaLive destination. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

In MediaLive, check the output destination protocol, URL, and stream name against those current YouTube values. MediaLive stores the RTMP destination URL and stream name in separate fields; do not assume a fixed endpoint or reuse a key from another event. Prefer RTMPS when it is configured and supported: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which adds TLS encryption to RTMP. For MediaLive’s destination fields, see AWS RTMP output destinations; for YouTube’s encoder guidance, see YouTube live encoder settings.

Match encoder settings to the source
YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate target for every stream. Match the settings to your source and use YouTube’s current recommendations rather than guessing a universal value. MediaLive’s available output settings and YouTube’s guidance are described in the AWS RTMP destination documentation and YouTube encoder-settings guide.

Start MediaLive and publish the YouTube event
- Open the channel: In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, choose Channels and select the channel you intend to use. Check its details and confirm that its input and output correspond to the intended source and YouTube event.
- Check input readiness: Confirm the source is ready. For a push input, confirm it is sending to MediaLive. If there are multiple inputs, verify the schedule or selection order.
- Start the channel: With the channel selected, choose Start. Its state should move from Idle through Starting toward Running.
- Allow startup time: AWS says most AWS Cloud channels start in three minutes or less; up to ten minutes can still be normal. Configuration complexity and EC2 instance size are among the factors that affect startup time. Check the channel’s state and alerts while it starts.
- Check YouTube: Return to Live Control Room and look for incoming video and a preview. Starting MediaLive does not necessarily publish a scheduled YouTube event.
- Go live if scheduled: Once the preview appears, select Go live in Live Control Room for a scheduled stream, following the status and prompts shown for that event.
AWS describes the manual start and state transitions in its channel start and stop guide; YouTube describes the preview and scheduled-event workflow in its encoder live-streaming guide.
Troubleshoot by separating channel state from YouTube delivery
The channel remains Idle
Confirm that you selected the intended channel and explicitly chose Start. Then inspect its current details, alerts, and state history. Idle alone does not reveal whether the action was missed, authorization failed, or a configuration issue exists; use the account’s actual state and alerts rather than assuming a cause. AWS’s state reference explains the state meanings.

The channel stays Starting
Allow for the documented startup window: most AWS Cloud channels start in three minutes or less, and up to ten minutes can still be normal. If it remains Starting beyond that, inspect the channel details, alerts, and logs. AWS does not identify the cause for your channel from its state alone; consult its startup guidance and account-specific diagnostics.
The channel is Running, but the expected video is missing
A Running state does not prove that the intended content is reaching the encoder. Check that the source is sending, that the correct input is selected, and that the schedule points to it. For a push input, confirm the upstream source is actively delivering media. See AWS’s RTMP push input documentation.

MediaLive is running, but YouTube has no preview
Compare MediaLive’s output protocol, URL, and stream name with the values YouTube currently displays for that specific stream. Check RTMP versus RTMPS as well as the key; if the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update MediaLive. See AWS destination fields and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
The preview appears, but the scheduled event is not live
For a scheduled event, preview and broadcast are separate steps. Once YouTube shows the incoming preview, select Go live in Live Control Room if the event has not already been published.
