If Dropped frames increases and the connection indicator turns yellow or red, troubleshoot the network path to the streaming service or lower the bitrate. If OBS reports rendering lag or “encoding overloaded,” reduce GPU and scene workload instead. Those are different problems with different fixes.
1. Identify the kind of frame loss
Open OBS’s status area while streaming and watch the counters. Network dropped frames point to trouble delivering data to the remote ingest server or sustaining the configured bitrate. OBS says its connection guide applies when dropped frames or intermittent disconnections occur between the computer and the ingest server (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024).

Rendering lag and an “encoding overloaded” message belong to a separate performance branch: OBS may not have enough GPU resources to composite and render the scene. Reducing network bitrate alone will not fix that bottleneck. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide is dated June 12, 2021.

2. Fix network-related dropped frames

Try a different ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select another available server, then test whether the dropped-frame counter still rises. OBS recommends changing servers as a troubleshooting step. For Twitch on Windows, its guide suggests TwitchTest to compare server quality results; that tool recommendation is specific to Twitch and Windows.

Lower the video bitrate
Open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: available upload capacity, route stability, and the streaming service’s own bitrate limits all matter. Leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the connection’s apparent maximum.

Test another service to isolate the route
OBS suggests temporarily testing another streaming service—for example, trying YouTube if the original destination is Twitch. If the alternate service works, the issue may be specific to the original service or route; if it does not, investigate the broader connection. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a permanent change unless it fits your needs.

Use Ethernet to remove Wi-Fi as a variable
OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If practical, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet and compare results. A cable can help test whether wireless instability is involved; it cannot fix every ISP, routing, or hardware problem.

Check VPNs, security software, and network utilities
Temporarily test without a VPN or security software. If the stream stabilizes, configure an appropriate exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving security software disabled. OBS also identifies network “optimization” utilities—such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and the Killer NIC suite—as possible sources of interference.

Review network settings and hardware
In OBS, leave Bind to IP set to Default. OBS documents IPv4-only as a test; if it makes no difference, return to IPv4/IPv6. On Windows, its guide also suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing.

Restart the modem and router, update the network driver from the device manufacturer, and check for faulty cables or problems with the router, modem, network card, switch, or extender. Change one variable at a time where possible so you can tell which test affects the counter.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a trade-off
OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It can lower bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames, but it does not repair the underlying connection and the resulting lower bitrate reduces video quality. Consider it a way to handle temporary congestion, not a substitute for diagnosing a persistently unstable link.

Contact your ISP if the route remains unreliable
If OBS’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve persistent connection trouble, OBS recommends contacting your ISP. Congestion or routing beyond your home equipment may be outside your control.

3. Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
Use this branch when OBS points to rendering or encoding performance rather than network drops. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes; a complex nature-sounds scene with animated overlays, browser sources, filters, or other demanding elements can add load even when the video itself appears calm.
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator when investigating GPU overload.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs so OBS has more resources available.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the current settings. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Simplify the scene: remove unnecessary sources and overlays, limit expensive filters, and reduce browser sources.
These changes trade visual detail, motion smoothness, or scene complexity for lower system load. They target rendering and encoding performance; they are not a fix for a weak network route.

4. What changes—and does not change—for a 24/7 nature stream
A low-motion scene does not change OBS’s network diagnosis: the computer still has to deliver the configured stream to the ingest server over a sufficiently stable connection. For sustained operation, the cited OBS guidance points to a wired link, bitrate headroom, a suitable ingest route, and checks for interfering software and network equipment.

OBS’s published troubleshooting guides do not define a nature-stream-specific or 24/7 preset, recommend an uptime target, or guarantee that a particular computer, router, or service will remain online indefinitely. Check the destination platform’s current stream requirements separately before choosing output settings.
5. If keeping the computer on is the problem
OBS troubleshooting can help diagnose a stream running from your own computer, but it does not remove the need for that computer and its connection to stay available.
