How to Fix OBS Crashes on Windows 10 While Streaming

If OBS closes or freezes during a Windows 10 stream, distinguish a crash from dropped frames or overload, then isolate graphics hooks, extensions, Game DVR, and GPU demand.

If OBS Studio closes, freezes, or shows a crash error during a Windows 10 stream, first confirm it is an application crash—not dropped frames, a blank capture, or an overloaded encoder. Then test likely causes one at a time: graphics-hook conflicts, third-party OBS extensions, Windows Game DVR, and GPU or encoding load. This sequence helps isolate the cause without making several changes that obscure the result.

First identify what is actually failing

Note exactly what happens and when. OBS closing or showing a crash report is different from a stream that remains open but stutters or stops sending video. Dropped frames generally point to network stability or bitrate; rendering or encoding lag points to performance. Neither symptom by itself proves OBS crashed. OBS explains these distinctions in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

  • OBS closes or reports a crash: start with application conflicts and extensions.
  • OBS stays open, but video freezes or lags: check rendering and encoding load.
  • OBS stays open, but the stream drops frames: investigate network stability and bitrate rather than treating it as a crash.
  • A source is blank while OBS remains responsive: troubleshoot that source or its capture compatibility separately.

Before changing anything, record the trigger—for example, starting the stream, opening a browser source, switching scenes, or opening a file dialog. Make one change at a time and repeat the same action. This keeps the result useful for diagnosis.

Close apps that hook into graphics or capture

Overlays and other recording utilities can hook into graphics functions that OBS also uses. OBS lists these conflicts as a possible cause of crashes or unusual behavior in its Known Application Conflicts guide.

  1. Stop the stream if possible, then exit overlays, on-screen display utilities, other game capture or recording software, and similar background apps.
  2. Test with commonly implicated software closed, including MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, EVGA Precision, Discord or other voice-app overlays, and competing capture tools.
  3. Repeat the action that previously triggered the crash.
  4. If the problem stops, reopen or re-enable the closed apps one at a time until the conflict returns. Keep the conflicting app closed while streaming, or check whether its overlay or capture feature can be disabled.

OBS specifically says D3DGear installs global DirectX hooks, so closing it may not be enough; its guide says it must be uninstalled to remove that conflict. The same guide associates Dell Backup & Recovery and Alienware Alien Respawn with crashes when OBS opens a Browse dialog. If your crash happens at that point, check whether either utility is installed.

Run OBS in safe mode to test extensions

OBS safe mode disables third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets. If the crash disappears there, an extension or its interaction with another component becomes a likely lead; it does not identify which one by itself.

  1. Close OBS.
  2. Open the OBS shortcut’s Properties and locate the Target field.
  3. Add a space after the existing obs64.exe path, then add --safe-mode. Do not remove or alter the executable path.
  4. Launch OBS with that shortcut and reproduce the trigger.
  5. If OBS is stable, return to normal mode and disable or re-enable third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets selectively to find the likely conflict.

OBS documents this launch option and the shortcut method in its Launch Parameters guide. For a more detailed OBS log, the same guide documents --verbose; add it after the executable path in the shortcut’s Target field. Treat the log as diagnostic material, not as a diagnosis without examining the actual report and system details.

Check Windows 10 Game DVR and Game Mode

OBS’s Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting guide recommends checking Game DVR or background captures, which can conflict with hardware encoding such as NVENC or consume resources.

  1. Press Win + R, enter winver, and note the Windows 10 version before following version-specific advice.
  2. Open Settings > Gaming. Depending on your Windows version, look under Game DVR or Captures.
  3. Turn off background recording or captures, then test OBS again using the same trigger.
  4. Change Game Mode only if the guidance for your Windows build indicates it. OBS says Windows 10 version 1809 or newer can leave Game Mode on; older builds may need it disabled.

OBS’s guide describes registry changes for older builds. Do not make a registry edit based on instructions for a different Windows version: verify the build and follow the applicable OBS guidance carefully. If you are unsure, avoid registry changes and collect the system details before proceeding.

Reduce GPU or encoding load when symptoms point to overload

If OBS remains open but reports rendering or encoding lag, or the problem appears only under heavy game load, try performance changes. These steps can relieve overload; they do not establish that overload caused every application crash. OBS’s performance guide recommends several reversible checks:

  • Run OBS as administrator: close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and choose Run as administrator.
  • Reduce competing GPU demand: close other GPU-heavy programs while streaming.
  • Limit the game’s workload: cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding game graphics settings.
  • Lower OBS output demands: reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working reliably, test 30 fps.
  • Simplify the scene: temporarily remove or disable sources, filters, and browser sources, then restore them one at a time.

Change a single setting, test, and note the result. If OBS actually closes rather than merely falling behind, continue investigating conflicts and extensions as well.

Check GPU assignment on a laptop

A laptop with more than one GPU may assign OBS to the lower-power integrated GPU. OBS recommends using the high-power GPU for OBS in this configuration. Its Laptop Troubleshooting guide describes a newer display-capture method that requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. That version detail concerns display-capture compatibility; changing GPU assignment is not a universal crash fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Windows’ graphics settings for OBS and select the high-performance GPU when the laptop offers that choice. Then test the same scene and capture source. If the issue is limited to display capture, confirm that your Windows and OBS versions meet the guide’s requirements before changing capture methods.

What to do if OBS still crashes

There is no single fix established for every OBS crash. If the isolation steps do not resolve yours, gather the details needed to narrow it down before trying more invasive changes.

  • The exact error message, if one appears.
  • Whether OBS closes, freezes, stops rendering, or remains open while the stream drops frames.
  • The precise action that triggers the problem and whether it happens every time.
  • Your OBS version and Windows 10 build, including the result of winver.
  • Your GPU model and driver version.
  • The OBS log or crash report from the affected session.
  • Which checks you tried and what changed after each one.

OBS’s system requirements page lists Windows 10 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as minimum compatibility requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee that a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene will run smoothly. OBS notes that workload depends on those factors. A crash report and workload details are more useful than assuming a computer that meets the minimum must handle every stream setup.

Keep a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS running

If the underlying need is to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video while you work through OBS problems, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps the stream running without a computer at home, plays uploaded video as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free first day.
