Start by copying the complete error, then test the same account outside phpMyAdmin with the same host and port. This separates a wrong password from a stopped server, a socket mismatch, rejected cookies, or an incompatible MySQL authentication plugin.

Identify which layer is failing
Read the exact message before changing anything. Keep the numeric code, database username, host name shown in the error, and whether it says a password was supplied. Each symptom points to a different repair.

| What you see | Most likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
Access denied for user or ERROR 1045 |
MySQL account, password, or host matching | Verify the username, password, host portion of the account, and any client option file supplying an old password. |
Connection refused, No such file, or a socket error |
Database service or transport settings | Confirm MySQL/MariaDB is running and compare phpMyAdmin’s host, port, and socket with the server. |
| The form reloads, cookies are rejected, or the session vanishes | Browser cookies or PHP sessions | Delete cookies for the phpMyAdmin host and check PHP session storage and lifetime. |
| The login form is missing or credentials appear fixed | phpMyAdmin authentication mode | Inspect $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] in config.inc.php. |
| A plugin or protocol error appears after a MySQL upgrade | Authentication-plugin and PHP client compatibility | Inspect the account’s plugin and the PHP/mysqlnd version. |
Do not reset a password to solve a transport, cookie, or configuration problem. A password change affects the MySQL account; it cannot start a stopped server or repair an expiring PHP session.
Also note whether the failure affects every account or only one. If several known-good accounts fail at once, prioritize the service, host, port, session, and phpMyAdmin settings. If one account fails while another works through the same page, focus on that account’s host row, password, privileges, or authentication plugin.

Check phpMyAdmin’s server configuration
Open the correct configuration file
Find the installation’s config.inc.php and inspect the server entry used by the login page. A typical entry looks like this:
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['port'] = '3306';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'cookie';
$cfg['blowfish_secret'] = 'use-a-long-random-secret';
The values above are an example, not credentials to copy. Confirm that the host and port identify the same database instance you intend to use. If the server listens on a non-default port or requires a specific Unix socket, configure that explicitly according to the installed phpMyAdmin documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
When multiple server entries exist, make sure you are editing the entry selected by the login page rather than an unused entry. A syntactically valid change in the wrong block has no effect. Compare the effective values with the connection that succeeds from a command-line client, including whether it uses TCP or a socket.
Understand cookie and config authentication
With auth_type = 'cookie', phpMyAdmin displays a login form and uses the submitted MySQL username and password. The server configuration normally does not need a fixed user or password value. This is the usual choice when different people must sign in with their own database accounts.
With auth_type = 'config', phpMyAdmin uses the username and password stored in config.inc.php. The form may be absent because there is nothing for a visitor to enter. Check those values character-for-character, and protect the file so only the web-server account and authorized administrators can read it. HTTP authentication is another mode and likewise does not require populating the server entry with a database password.
If credentials appear to be ignored, do not keep typing them into a form that is not being used. First identify the authentication mode, then change the appropriate source: the submitted values in cookie mode or the configuration values in config mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepair the cookie secret safely
Cookie authentication requires a valid blowfish_secret so phpMyAdmin can encrypt its authentication cookie. Generate a long, random secret using a trusted local method and follow the length guidance for your installed phpMyAdmin release. Do not publish a real secret or leave the illustrative string in production. After editing the file, save it with restrictive permissions and reload the application.
Changing the secret invalidates existing phpMyAdmin authentication cookies. That is expected; clear the old browser cookie and sign in again. Never place the secret, a database password, or a reset file in a web-accessible directory.
Clear browser cookies and verify PHP sessions
If submitting the form simply returns to the same form, first delete cookies for the phpMyAdmin host, close the tab, and start a fresh browser session. A stale or malformed cookie can survive a configuration change and make a valid password look ineffective.

When the loop continues in a clean session, inspect PHP rather than MySQL:
- Verify that PHP sessions are enabled for the PHP runtime serving phpMyAdmin.
- Check that the session-save directory exists, is writable by the PHP/web-server account, and is not full.
- Confirm that the server’s clock is sane; badly skewed time can make session cookies appear invalid.
- Review
session.gc_maxlifetime. If it is set very low, PHP can discard the session before phpMyAdmin finishes the login. - Make sure the browser is allowed to store cookies for the exact host and protocol you are using. Moving between HTTP and HTTPS or between an IP address and a DNS name creates different cookie scopes.
Use the browser’s developer tools only to confirm whether a session cookie is being set and returned; never copy a live cookie into a ticket or public log.
Test in a private window only as a diagnostic, not as a permanent fix. If private browsing works, compare cookie-blocking, privacy, and extension settings in the normal profile. If neither mode receives a session cookie, inspect the PHP runtime and web-server response rather than repeatedly changing the MySQL password.
Test the same account outside phpMyAdmin
A direct client test removes the browser and PHP from the equation. Run it on the database host, or from a machine permitted by the database firewall, using the same host and port configured in phpMyAdmin:
mysql --no-defaults -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306 -u db_user -p
Enter the password when prompted. The --no-defaults option is important during diagnosis because MySQL clients can read an option file containing an obsolete password, user, host, or socket. If this command succeeds, the account and network path work and the remaining fault is probably phpMyAdmin configuration, cookies, or PHP. If it fails with ERROR 1045, continue with account and host checks.

A prompt avoids exposing it through shell history or process listings. Record only the error text needed for diagnosis, and redact usernames or hosts if logs leave the administrative environment.
Why localhost and 127.0.0.1 can behave differently
On many Unix-like systems, a MySQL client given localhost uses a Unix socket rather than TCP. 127.0.0.1 forces TCP. MySQL authenticates against an account identified by both username and host, so 'db_user'@'localhost' and 'db_user'@'127.0.0.1' can have different passwords, privileges, or authentication plugins. A successful test with one address does not prove that the other address will work.
Repeat the test with the exact alternatives used by phpMyAdmin. If the socket path is known, specify it explicitly:
mysql --no-defaults --socket=/path/to/mysql.sock -u db_user -p
Do not guess a socket path in production; obtain it from the server configuration or service status output. A mismatch between phpMyAdmin’s socket and the running server produces connection errors even when the database is healthy.

For a remote database, test from the web server or another permitted client, not only from a local shell on the database host. A local success can hide firewall rules, listen-address restrictions, or a different 'user'@'host' row for remote connections.
Confirm that MySQL or MariaDB is running
Errors such as connection refused, error 2002, error 2003, and “no such file” indicate a transport problem rather than an invalid password. Check the database service with the service manager used by your operating system, then inspect its log if it is stopped or repeatedly crashing. The service must be running before phpMyAdmin can authenticate.
- Check the configured TCP port;
3306is common but not universal. - Check whether the server is listening only on a particular interface. A server bound to a private address will reject connections sent to another address.
- Check firewall rules between the web server and database host.
- For socket connections, verify that the socket file exists and that the web-server process can reach its directory.
- Ensure phpMyAdmin is pointed at the intended MySQL versus MariaDB instance when more than one database service is installed.
Changing a password while the service is stopped cannot fix any of these conditions. If the service starts and then stops, preserve its error log before making further changes; a failed upgrade, permissions issue, or full filesystem requires a service repair first.
Resolve an ERROR 1045 access denial
Verify every account component
MySQL’s account identity includes the username and host. Compare the exact spelling and capitalization of the username, the host in the error, and the address phpMyAdmin is using. Check for accidental whitespace, an unexpected default database, or a password manager filling a value from another environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The phrase “using password: NO” means no password reached MySQL, while “using password: YES” means a password was supplied but does not prove it was the right one. In either case, verify the authentication mode and the actual connection parameters before resetting anything.
If the direct command works only with --no-defaults, inspect the client option files used by the web-server or command-line account. Remove or correct stale credentials rather than weakening the database account.
Inspect account rows with an administrative connection
Using an already authorized administrative account, inspect the relevant rows:
SELECT User, Host, plugin FROM mysql.user WHERE User = 'db_user';
SHOW CREATE USER 'db_user'@'localhost';
Run the second statement for the actual host value shown by the failing connection. If the expected row does not exist, create or alter the account deliberately and grant only the privileges it needs. Do not grant global administrative rights merely to make phpMyAdmin open.
When several rows match a name, the host-specific row selected by MySQL matters. Correct the row that corresponds to the connection path instead of changing an unrelated local-only account.

Fix authentication-plugin problems after an upgrade
New MySQL 8.0 installations use caching_sha2_password by default for newly initialized accounts, including the root account in the standard initialization path. Older PHP builds or mysqli/mysqlnd clients may not support the account’s plugin correctly, resulting in a protocol or authentication error even when the password is right.
The auth_socket plugin is different: it authenticates a local Unix-socket connection using the operating-system identity. It is intentionally not a normal remote password login. A root account using auth_socket may work for an operating-system administrator at the local shell while failing from phpMyAdmin, a remote host, or a TCP connection.
Check the plugin and client versions
SELECT User, Host, plugin FROM mysql.user WHERE User = 'root';
SHOW CREATE USER 'root'@'localhost';
Record the PHP version and the mysqlnd/mysqli client actually used by the web server, not only the version installed for a command-line shell. Upgrade PHP and its database extension when possible. If policy requires changing the account plugin, use a deliberate, supported ALTER USER statement after reviewing compatibility and security consequences; do not make an emergency downgrade without understanding which clients and accounts it affects.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →After upgrading the client or changing the plugin, retest from the same web-server process and connection path. A successful shell connection with a newer command-line client does not prove that the PHP runtime loaded the same library.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recover a forgotten MySQL or MariaDB password
Prefer an existing administrative account
If another authorized administrator can connect, reset only the affected account with an ALTER USER statement, then test the new password directly before returning to phpMyAdmin. This preserves normal access controls and creates an auditable change.
Use an init file when the root password is genuinely lost
MySQL documents a supported platform-specific recovery procedure that starts the server with an initialization file containing an account change such as:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'NewPassword';
- Stop the database service using the operating system’s normal service controls.
- Create a temporary init file readable only by the account that will start the server, containing the single intended
ALTER USERstatement. - Start the server with the documented option that reads that init file.
- Wait for the server to apply the statement, then confirm that the account accepts the new password.
- Stop the temporary instance, delete the init file securely, and restart the service normally.
- Test with the same host, port, and client type used by phpMyAdmin.
Exact startup syntax differs by platform and server version, so use the procedure for your installed release. Never leave the file in a web-accessible directory or retain it after recovery.
Understand the risk of --skip-grant-tables
MySQL also documents a generic --skip-grant-tables route. It temporarily disables normal privilege checks, so anyone able to reach that server during the recovery window may gain unrestricted database access. Use it only for controlled local recovery, block network access, perform the password change promptly, shut the instance down, remove the temporary startup option, and restart with grants enabled. Prefer the init-file method when it is supported for your platform.
A reset is complete only after the normal service has restarted and the temporary file or startup option is gone. Test both the account and the application that depends on it; scheduled jobs and other clients may still contain the old password.
Best Value
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Fix | Changes | Reversible? | Security and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete browser cookies and repair PHP sessions | Browser/session state only | Yes; no database change | Local to the affected browser and web application. |
Correct config.inc.php host, port, auth mode, or secret |
phpMyAdmin behavior | Yes; restore the previous file | Affects every user of that phpMyAdmin installation; protect the file. |
| Fix service, socket, firewall, or port settings | Database transport | Usually, by restoring the prior service configuration | May affect all applications using the instance. |
| Reset one MySQL account password | One account’s credentials | Only by setting another known password | Can affect applications or scheduled jobs using that account. |
| Change an authentication plugin or upgrade PHP | Client/server authentication compatibility | Depends on the migration plan | May affect every client using that account or PHP runtime; test deliberately. |
Start with --skip-grant-tables |
Temporarily disables access controls | Only after a controlled restart | Highest risk; keep local, brief, and monitored. |
Choose the smallest-scope change that addresses the observed layer. Browser and session repairs are usually reversible without touching database data. Account resets and plugin changes are broader because applications, jobs, and remote clients may depend on the existing credentials or authentication method.
After you regain access
- Remove temporary init files and any emergency startup options.
- Rotate a password that may have appeared in shell history, logs, screenshots, or configuration backups.
- Use a least-privilege MySQL account for routine phpMyAdmin work instead of a root account.
- Keep
config.inc.phpoutside public download paths and readable only by the required system account. - Keep phpMyAdmin behind appropriate web authentication, HTTPS, network restrictions, and timely security updates.
- Document the working host, port, socket, account host row, and authentication plugin so the next upgrade can be tested before production cutover.
The durable diagnostic rule is to fix the layer that generated the error: browser/session, phpMyAdmin configuration, transport, MySQL account, or authentication plugin. Testing the same credentials with the same connection parameters outside phpMyAdmin usually reveals that layer faster than repeatedly resubmitting the login form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does phpMyAdmin keep returning me to the login page?
Clear cookies for the phpMyAdmin host, start a fresh session, and verify that PHP sessions are enabled, writable, and not expiring immediately. Check session.gc_maxlifetime, cookie permissions, and whether you changed between HTTP/HTTPS or hostnames.
What does “Access denied for user” or ERROR 1045 mean?
It is usually a MySQL account problem. Verify the exact username, password, host value, and authentication plugin. Test with the same host and port using mysql --no-defaults so an old option-file password cannot interfere.
Why does localhost fail while 127.0.0.1 works?
On many Unix-like systems, localhost uses a Unix socket while 127.0.0.1 uses TCP. MySQL can select different 'user'@'host' rows, with different passwords, privileges, or plugins, for those paths.
Why is there no phpMyAdmin login form?
Check $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type']. In config mode, phpMyAdmin uses the username and password in config.inc.php; in cookie mode, visitors enter credentials in the form.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can a stopped MySQL server cause a bad-password message?
A stopped or unreachable service normally produces connection-refused, error 2002/2003, socket, or “no such file” errors rather than ERROR 1045. Confirm the service, port, interface, firewall, and socket before changing passwords.
Why did a MySQL 8 upgrade break phpMyAdmin login?
New MySQL 8.0 accounts commonly use caching_sha2_password. An older PHP/mysqlnd or mysqli client may not support it correctly. Check the account plugin and the PHP client used by the web server, then upgrade compatibility or make a deliberate supported account change.
What is auth_socket, and can phpMyAdmin use it?
auth_socket authenticates a local Unix-socket connection by operating-system identity. It is not a normal remote password login, so an account using it may work for a local administrator while failing from phpMyAdmin or a TCP connection.
How should I reset a forgotten root password safely?
Use an existing administrative account when possible. Otherwise follow the platform-specific MySQL init-file procedure, remove the temporary file after the ALTER USER statement is applied, and restart normally. Use --skip-grant-tables only for controlled local recovery because it disables normal access checks.
The Bottom Line
Copy the complete error, identify whether the failure is a session, configuration, transport, account, or plugin problem, and test the same credentials with the same host and port outside phpMyAdmin. Make the narrowest safe change, remove temporary recovery files or options, and use a least-privilege account after access is restored.
