Most Switch Sports connection failures come down to one of four things: Nintendo’s servers are down, the Switch user has no active Nintendo Switch Online membership, your NAT type or speed is poor for peer-to-peer play, or your Wi-Fi is unstable. Work through them in that order, because the first two cost nothing and need no router changes. The steps below follow Nintendo Support’s own guidance (Americas) as accessed on 7 October 2026. Nintendo’s pages carry no publication dates, so check that the menu names still match your system software.
Start with a quick triage
- Read the exact error code on screen. Some codes point to Nintendo, not your network.
- Check Nintendo’s network status page for current maintenance or outages.
- Confirm the user profile that launched the game has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Run the console’s connection test and write down the NAT type, download speed and upload speed.
- Retest after every single change, so you know which change helped.
Rule out service and account problems first
Error 2124-4610: server maintenance
Nintendo says this code means the Nintendo Switch Sports online servers are under maintenance. Check the network status page and try again later. Changing router settings will not help.

No Nintendo Switch Online membership
Online play needs an active membership, according to Nintendo’s Switch Sports FAQ. Without one, the Play Globally option only offers a trial competition against computer opponents. If you activated a membership just now, close the game and try again after a short wait.

Repeated unexpected disconnections trigger a temporary online restriction. Nintendo’s advice is to wait for it to lift and to avoid leaving matches before they end. This is a penalty, not a fault in your network, though it often starts with one. Fix the underlying instability so it doesn’t recur.

Run the connection test and read the results
On the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. A pass on this test does not prove matchmaking will work. Nintendo’s matchmaking guide also asks you to look at NAT type and speeds, because Switch Sports connects players peer-to-peer.
NAT type
Nintendo rates NAT from A (best for peer-to-peer) to F (peer-to-peer blocked). In Nintendo’s words: “NAT type A is preferred and generally indicates that your network environment works well for connecting with other players. NAT type B is compatible with most other NAT types as well.”

- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
| NAT type | What Nintendo says |
|---|---|
| A | Preferred; network generally works well for connecting with others |
| B | Compatible with most other NAT types |
| C | May have difficulty connecting with some restrictive peers |
| D | Not optimal for peer-to-peer connections |
| F | Peer-to-peer communication is blocked |
Nintendo’s NAT article also states: “Both your NAT type and the NAT type any player you are attempting to connect with can affect the connection process.” If you fail only against one particular opponent, their NAT may be the limit, and they should run the same checks. An A or B result does not guarantee success, since high latency can still cause timeouts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDownload speed
Nintendo’s matchmaking flow branches at 3 Mbps download. Below it, you follow the slow-speed troubleshooting. At or above it, you move on to connection-type and network-environment checks. This is a decision point in Nintendo’s guide, not a promise that matches work above 3 Mbps or a published bandwidth requirement. Latency and your home network still matter.

If you play on Wi-Fi
- Move the console within 3 to 5 metres (10 to 15 feet) of the router.
- Clear nearby objects and electronics that could cause interference.
- Power cycle the home network (modem and router), then retest.
- Try turning IPv6 off on the console, as Nintendo’s flow includes this step.
- If problems persist, ask the router maker about firmware updates or a factory reset.
- If a direct-to-modem test still fails, contact your ISP.
If you play wired
- Turn off IPv6 on the console.
- Power cycle the modem and router.
- Connect the console directly to the modem to rule out other devices or the router.
- Swap in a different Ethernet cable.
The standard Switch dock has no LAN port on some models, and Nintendo says you need a USB LAN adapter for a wired connection in that case. Check that an adapter is compatible with your model before buying. It is only worth trying if you want to test wired play, and it is not a guaranteed fix.

Nintendo says this usually means your network isn’t well suited to peer-to-peer matchmaking, and the cause may be your ISP, internet speed or NAT. Retry once, check your NAT type, and try another network if you can. Nintendo specifically warns that mobile hotspots and 5G connections may block peer-to-peer connections. If another network works, contact your ISP about the original one. If the router looks like the cause, update its firmware or reset it.

|---|---|---|
| Code 2124-4610 | Nintendo server maintenance | Check network status, wait |
| Only computer opponents offered | No active membership on this user | Check Nintendo Switch Online on the profile in use |
| Fails every time, NAT C, D or F, or slow speeds | Local router or ISP | Wi-Fi or wired steps above |
| Fails only with one friend | Their NAT or network | Have them run the same test |
| Works on another network but not at home | Home router or ISP | Firmware or reset, then ISP |
| Restriction message after disconnects | Temporary online penalty | Wait and stay in matches until they finish |
Nintendo has not published figures on how often players hit these problems, so none are quoted here.
