A loose or wobbly Nintendo 64 stick often points to wear inside the joystick mechanism, but “drift” describes a symptom, not a diagnosis. The documented repair options are to replace the joystick module or open it and rebuild the worn bowl contact surface with epoxy. Which makes sense depends on where the wear is and whether you want to keep the original module.
First, identify what the stick is doing
Notice whether the stick moves loosely, feels stiff, responds inconsistently, or fails to register movement. These symptoms are not interchangeable. A loose, wobbly stick suggests mechanical play; stiffness, inconsistent sensitivity, or no input may have different causes.

An iFixit community question about older N64 controllers describes thumbsticks that became less accurate and harder to control. In a response posted August 30, 2010, a contributor attributed lost movement range to wear in the plastic guide slots. That is a repair contributor’s explanation, not an official Nintendo diagnosis. The sources do not establish a single cause for every controller revision or replacement module.

Choose between rebuilding and replacing the joystick
| Approach | Best fit | What it involves | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair the bowl surface with epoxy | You want to retain the original module and the looseness appears related to wear where the bowl contacts the stick. | Open the joystick box, clean and remove the bowl, shape epoxy inside it, trim excess, let it harden, then grease the contact area and check the stick’s stiffness. iFixit’s repair guide documents this procedure. | It is a delicate adjustment: too little epoxy can leave the stick loose, while too much can make it stiff. The guide does not establish long-term durability or suitability for every worn mechanism. |
| Replace the complete joystick module | The module is faulty or wobbly, or you prefer a module swap over rebuilding small parts. | Disconnect and remove the existing joystick assembly, then install a replacement. See iFixit’s joystick replacement guide and controller teardown. | Match the module to your controller and the stick style you want. The teardown’s pictured module is third party and may differ from yours; the sources do not establish universal compatibility for replacement designs. |
| Inspect or rebuild internal parts | You have opened the original module and want to see which components are worn before choosing a repair. | The repair guide shows the bowl within the mechanism, and the community answer discusses wear in guide slots. | The cited sources do not verify a specific current parts kit or its availability. Do not assume the bowl is the only worn component. |
There is no controlled comparison showing that one option works better in all cases. Consider whether the whole module is faulty or wear seems localized, whether retaining the original matters to you, whether a candidate replacement fits your controller, and how comfortable you are with small-part adjustments.

Open the controller without forcing mismatched screws
The disassembly guides do not describe identical screw layouts: iFixit’s repair guide removes nine 4.8 mm Phillips screws, while its teardown describes seven rear screws plus smaller screws in the Controller Pak slot. Follow the instructions that match your controller rather than assuming the screw count or layout is universal.
- Use the repair guide or teardown as appropriate for your controller. The teardown describes size #1 and #0 Phillips drivers; use a driver that fits the screw head securely.
- Keep screws and the joystick box’s small plastic pieces organized as you remove them.
- If a screw does not turn with a well-fitting driver, stop and check that you are following the correct guide. Do not force a mismatched screw or driver.
- For a module replacement, the documented swap involves removing the joystick assembly’s screws and disconnecting its cable. The pictured third-party module may differ from the one in your controller.
Repair the bowl surface with epoxy
The following is the procedure documented by iFixit, not a tested guarantee of a successful or permanent repair. Work carefully: the fit depends on shaping and trimming the epoxy so the stick remains movable without excessive looseness.

- Compatible with all N64 models
- 10 ft. Cable
- Ergonomic, Premium build
- Analog Joysticks
- Open the joystick box and clean its components. Remove the bowl as shown in the iFixit repair guide.
- Knead the epoxy until its color is uniform, then press it into the bowl.
- Use a marble with a push-and-twist motion to form the epoxy surface. Trim excess with a knife.
- Let the epoxy harden. The guide says to wait 30 minutes or until it is hardened; this is that guide’s procedure, not a validated cure-time recommendation for every epoxy product.
- Apply grease to the epoxy and the joystick contact area. The guide does not specify a lubricant formulation.
- Reassemble enough to check the stick’s movement and stiffness before closing the controller. If it is still too loose, the guide says to add epoxy; if it is too stiff, remove excess. Make small adjustments rather than assuming the first fit is correct.
Replace the module and check the fit
The replacement route avoids shaping an epoxy contact surface, but it still depends on choosing a compatible module. iFixit’s replacement guide shows removing the joystick assembly and installing another; its teardown warns that the pictured third-party module may differ from the reader’s.
- Compare the replacement module with the one in your controller before installation. The cited sources do not provide a universal compatibility chart.
- Remove the existing module’s screws and disconnect its cable as shown in the replacement guide.
- Fit the replacement and reconnect it in reverse order, following the guide that matches your controller and module.
- Check stick movement before fully closing the controller. If movement is still wrong, do not assume the replacement has solved the problem; the available guides do not diagnose every controller or replacement design.
What a repair can and cannot promise
The cited guides describe repair procedures, not controlled tests of success rate, calibration, durability, or performance across epoxy repairs and replacement modules. They do not establish that either route permanently fixes every N64 stick problem. If the stick is stiff, inconsistently responsive, or has no input rather than being mechanically loose, those symptoms may need a different diagnosis.
