Most next/image failures come down to one of four causes: the image URL does not match the configured allowlist, the source needs authentication, the deployment uses static export with the default optimizer, or the image has no usable layout dimensions. Start by checking the exact src value passed to the component, then apply the matching fix below.
Identify which image rule is failing
Inspect the actual src value at runtime and classify it before changing configuration: a local path, a remote URL, an authenticated URL, or an image rendered by a static export. The exact error message can narrow the cause, but the source and deployment setup determine the right fix.

Fix an unconfigured remote host
Next.js checks a remote image against the URL pattern, not just the domain name. Protocol, hostname, port, pathname, and—in object-form patterns—query-string behavior all matter. Matching is exact and case-sensitive. For example, https://assets.example.com/photos/a.jpg?size=large will not match a pattern for https://example.com/**: the host differs, and a pattern that requires an empty search string would reject the query as well.
Use a pattern that matches the real source while allowing no more than the app needs:

}This example permits HTTPS images under /photos/ on that hostname and rejects query strings. If your source URLs use a fixed query string, configure that exact value. If they legitimately vary, omit search in the object pattern to allow any query string; do not do so unless that broader match is acceptable. Narrow patterns reduce the chance that the optimizer will fetch unintended sources. See the Image component API and unconfigured-host error guidance.
Check subdomains, ports, and pattern syntax
- Confirm the URL uses the expected protocol, such as
https, and the exact hostname, including any subdomain. - For local development, check whether the URL includes a port and whether the pattern accounts for it.
- In patterns,
*matches one hostname or pathname segment.**can match multiple segments at the beginning of a hostname or at the end of a pathname; it does not work in the middle. - A
URLobject made from a URL without a query string has an emptysearchvalue. That can reject image URLs that include query parameters.
Fix an unconfigured local path
If your error names localPatterns, the source is local but restricted by an allowlist. Add a pathname pattern for the directory the image actually uses and decide whether its URLs may carry query parameters. For example, an allowlist for /assets/images/** with search: '' covers files below that directory but rejects URLs with a query string. A narrower path such as /assets/ may not match nested image files as intended. Check the local-pattern error guidance and the Image component API.

Handle images that require authentication
The default Image Optimization API does not forward headers when fetching a source image. A browser session or authorization header therefore will not automatically reach a protected image host. Next.js states: “For security reasons, the Image Optimization API using the default loader will not forward headers when fetching the src image.” Next.js Image component documentation.

Direct delivery changes where the request is made; make sure the browser is authorized to retrieve that URL and that exposing it is appropriate for your application.

Choose an image strategy for static export
The built-in optimizer transforms images on demand. A static export does not include that server-side API, so the default loader cannot optimize images in the exported output. The documented alternatives are:
- Run the app with a server: use
next startor another server deployment so the default optimization API is available. - Use an image provider or custom loader: delegate image transformations to a service or define how image URLs are generated. Next.js supports per-image
loaderfunctions and an application-levelloaderFile. Its documentation lists integration examples for providers including Cloudinary, Cloudflare, Imgix, and ImageKit; that list describes integration options, not a ranking or pricing comparison. unoptimizedon an image or configure it for the application when serving original images is acceptable.
unoptimized serves the source without changing its quality, size, or format. It can address static-export constraints or sources that the default optimizer cannot fetch, but it also gives up built-in optimization for those images. Choose based on whether the deployment can run an optimizer, whether sources require authentication, and whether you need optimized responsive variants. Fix sizing and layout problems
For remote sources, Next.js cannot inspect the image file during the build. Give the component width and height, or use fill with a parent that has a defined size. The dimensions establish the image’s aspect ratio and help prevent layout shifts; CSS determines its rendered size. See the Image component documentation for sizing behavior.

Use syntax supported by the Next.js version installed in your project. The unconfigured-host guidance documents object-form remotePatterns for versions before 15.3.0 and the older domains option for versions before 12.3.0; it marks domains deprecated since Next.js 14. Current documentation includes both remotePatterns and localPatterns, but an older project may not accept every current option. Validate the fix
- Read the exact runtime
src, including protocol, host, port, path, and query string. - Identify whether the source is local, remote, authenticated, or being used in a static export.
- Adjust only the relevant allowlist or delivery strategy, using syntax supported by the installed Next.js version.
- Reload the page and confirm that the image request succeeds and that its rendered dimensions behave as intended.
