Netflix’s “You’re using a VPN” message means it detects a VPN or proxy connection on your device or network; it does not prove that you knowingly turned one on. Check for VPN software, compare the location Netflix sees with your actual location, then reset network settings or your router if needed. If the mismatch persists, your internet provider (ISP) is the next stop.
What Netflix’s VPN error means
Netflix Help Center says the message appears when “your device or network connects to Netflix through a VPN or proxy service.” A VPN may be part of antivirus software, enabled in the device’s network settings, or running on the network rather than in an app you recognize. A proxy or network-level location mismatch can also trigger the warning.

Netflix recommends turning off any VPN or proxy and trying again. If you do not know whether one is active, use the same-network check below before changing settings.

Check whether Netflix sees the wrong country
- On another device connected to the same Wi-Fi or network as the device showing the error, open Fast.com.
- Run the speed test, then select Show more info.
- Check the country shown next to Client. If it differs from your actual location, Netflix says the device or network likely has a VPN turned on.
This check helps identify a network-level route even when the affected device has no obvious VPN app. Note the Client country and IP address; they will be useful if you need to contact your ISP.

Turn off VPN or proxy software
Check the affected device’s VPN app and network settings. Also look in any antivirus or security suite for an included VPN feature: it may be enabled separately from the antivirus protection. If you find an active VPN or proxy, disconnect it and retry Netflix.
The exact controls vary by device and VPN provider. Use the provider’s instructions, or ask the device owner, network administrator, or VPN provider for help disabling it. Netflix’s first recommendation is to turn off the VPN or proxy, not to install another service or change to a different VPN server.

Check plan and viewing restrictions
Ad-supported Netflix experience
Netflix does not support VPN use with its ad-supported experience. If the error is an E121 warning while using an ad-supported experience, check which plan is on the account. A VPN is not a supported workaround for that plan.
Live events
Netflix also says VPNs are unsupported for live events. Turn off the VPN or proxy before trying to watch.

Why the available titles may change
Using a VPN can affect which titles Netflix shows. Netflix may display titles for which it has worldwide licensing rather than the catalog associated with your actual location.
Reset network settings, then restore router defaults
If you have turned off any VPN or proxy and the warning remains, Netflix recommends resetting network settings on the affected device. Try Netflix after that change. If the error continues, restore the modem or router’s default settings and test again.

These are general instructions, not a universal button-by-button path: the menus and reset process depend on your device and router. Consult the device maker’s or router maker’s instructions before resetting, especially if you rely on custom network settings. Make one change at a time and retry Netflix so you can tell which step affected the result.
Ask your ISP to check the connection
If the warning remains after the device and router checks, Netflix directs you to your ISP. Give the ISP the Fast.com Client country and IP address you recorded, and ask it to confirm whether they match the location and IP assigned to your home connection.

Then ask whether the connection uses the ISP’s DNS server. If it does not, ask the ISP how to switch back to its DNS, make the change with its guidance, and restart the Netflix app. If the ISP confirms that its DNS is already in use, Netflix says the ISP needs to work with Netflix.
Do not confuse this warning with every network error
Netflix’s separate NW-3-6 guidance discusses connection failures that may involve custom modem settings, VPN or proxy settings, or custom DNS. It recommends restoring defaults and restarting the home network, and says DNS problems should be handled with the ISP. That guidance is for NW-3-6; it is not a guaranteed fix for the “You’re using a VPN” warning.
If your issue is specifically the VPN or proxy message, follow the VPN check and escalation sequence above. For device-specific steps, consult Netflix’s current instructions for the affected platform, since exact settings vary by device.
