Start by identifying what is failing: note the device, the exact error message or code, whether the screen is black with or without sound, and whether the problem affects one title or everything. Then compare another title and, if possible, another device on the same network. Those checks point you toward the relevant fix—title, device, or connection—rather than a generic reset.
First, narrow down the problem
Before changing settings, record what you see and where it happens. Netflix’s troubleshooting steps vary by device and symptom.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Device: TV, streaming player, phone or tablet, computer, or another device.
- Symptom: buffering or slow loading, a frozen picture, a black screen with sound, a black screen without sound, or playback that stops and returns to the title page.
- Error: Copy the full code and message exactly, if one appears.
- Scope: Try a different show or movie. If possible, test Netflix on another device using the same network.
If just one title fails while others play, focus on reporting that title. If multiple titles fail on one device, investigate that device. If several devices on the same network have trouble, the connection or network is a stronger lead.
Search the exact error code or message in Netflix’s troubleshooting index, then follow the instructions for your device. Netflix’s error pages describe distinct causes and steps; a code is more useful than a generic “Netflix isn’t working” search.

Fix buffering or slow loading
Netflix says slow loading or buffering can mean the device has a weak or unstable internet connection, or may need an update. Its recommended steps depend on the device and network.
- Check whether the network allows Netflix. Public networks may restrict video services. On a private network, check whether the connection meets Netflix’s current speed recommendations. For computers and mobile devices, Netflix suggests using Fast.com and comparing the result with its recommendations. The recommended speeds can change, so use the current guidance rather than treating a remembered threshold as a guarantee.
- Restart the affected device. Follow the device-specific Netflix instructions, and install an operating-system update if those instructions call for one.
- Restart your home network. Turn off the device. Unplug the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Wait about one minute for the connection to return before trying Netflix again; some equipment may take longer.
- Improve Wi-Fi signal. Move the device and router closer together, ideally into the same room. Put the router in an open, elevated spot and away from other wireless devices or appliances.
- Contact your internet provider if the problem continues. Explain whether it affects one device or several, and whether the affected device uses Wi-Fi or a wired connection. Netflix suggests checking Fast.com again before ending the troubleshooting conversation with the provider.
These steps help establish whether the problem follows the connection or the device. Try placement and network troubleshooting before considering replacement equipment.

Fix a black screen on a TV or streaming device
A black screen with sound and a black screen without sound are different symptoms. Choose the matching path instead of assuming every blank screen is an HDMI problem.

Black screen with sound
Netflix says that hearing sound without seeing video, or a video that goes black during playback, usually points to the device or a video cable preventing video from appearing. On a TV-connected device:

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Fully restart the streaming device.
- Check that the HDMI cable is connected securely. Netflix suggests trying the cable with its ends reversed.
- If the issue affects only one show or movie while other titles play, report the title instead of treating the cable as the likely cause.
Use or replace an HDMI cable only if checking the connection indicates a cable problem; first reseat and test the cable you already have. For Netflix’s platform-specific steps, see Black screen with sound.
Black screen with no sound
Netflix’s no-sound guidance covers smart TVs, streaming players, phones and tablets, and computers. The cause may be the device or a cable connecting devices, but the relevant checks depend on the platform. On a TV-connected streaming player, check that the TV is set to the correct input and that connections are secure. Then follow the instructions for the affected device in Black screen with no sound.

For a basic TV or streaming-player restart, Netflix says to ensure the device is fully off, leave it off for 15 seconds, and turn it back on. Its TV and streaming media player troubleshooting page also describes restarting a home network by unplugging modem and router power for 30 seconds. Use the instructions for your specific symptom and device rather than combining different restart timings into one universal procedure.

If other Netflix titles play normally, a failure limited to one show or movie may be a title issue rather than a general device failure. For the message “We’re having trouble playing this title right now,” Netflix says either a network problem or an issue with the show or movie may be responsible. Try another title; if the failure remains isolated to one, open Viewing Activity and use Report a Problem for that title. See Netflix’s instructions for “We’re having trouble playing this title right now” and its broader video issues guidance.

If playback stops and returns you to the title description, use Netflix’s device-specific page for playback that stops and returns to the title description. If many titles fail, continue with the device and network checks rather than reporting each title separately.
Use the exact error code—and check consequences first
Error codes can narrow the cause, but examples are not a complete code list and their steps are device-specific:
- Service error (-2): Netflix describes this as a network-connectivity issue that prevents the device from reaching Netflix. Follow the steps on its Service error (-2) page.
- Video error (1.1): On Android, Netflix says this typically indicates that information stored on the device needs to be refreshed. Its Video error (1.1) page gives the applicable steps.
- Error tvq-pb-101 (3.1.5): Netflix says stored device data may be interfering with playback. Use the instructions on its tvq-pb-101 (3.1.5) page.
Before clearing Netflix app data on Android or reinstalling the app, be aware that these actions remove downloaded titles and sign you out. Have your Netflix password available, and follow the relevant Netflix instructions for your device.
