How to Fix MySQL InnoDB Errors That Keep Crashing the Server

Learn how to distinguish MySQL process crashes from failed InnoDB recovery, use innodb_force_recovery only for emergency extraction, and restore a trustworthy server without deleting critical files.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop repeatedly restarting mysqld and preserve the original data directory first. The error log, the last InnoDB message, the MySQL version, any stack trace, and the operating system’s evidence distinguish a process crash from an out-of-memory kill, failed crash recovery, redo-log damage, a missing tablespace, or a workload problem. Those cases do not have the same fix.

If InnoDB cannot complete recovery, treat innodb_force_recovery as an emergency data-extraction setting, not a repair. Start at level 1, raise it only one level at a time when necessary, dump whatever data is readable, and then rebuild or restore the instance from a known-good source. Never delete InnoDB files as a generic remedy.

First establish what is actually crashing

“MySQL keeps crashing” can describe several different events. A process may terminate with an assertion or segmentation fault; the operating system may kill it for exhausting memory; InnoDB may start and then stop during crash recovery; or the server may stay alive while a particular transaction, deadlock, or damaged table makes an application request fail. The log and restart pattern are more useful than the client error alone.

Capture the evidence before changing configuration

  1. Stop an automatic restart loop. Use your service manager to stop MySQL, but do not remove files from the data directory.
  2. Make an untouched copy of the complete data directory, including system tablespaces, per-table tablespaces, undo files, redo files, and configuration files. A storage snapshot or a block-level clone is preferable when available.
  3. Save the MySQL error log, the most recent startup and shutdown messages, any core dump or stack trace, and operating-system logs covering the same time window.
  4. Record the exact MySQL distribution and version, storage engine, recent upgrades or downgrades, filesystem changes, available disk space, memory limits, and the date of the last known-good backup.

Use the service’s normal log location rather than assuming a fixed path. On a systemd host, for example, the service journal can be inspected with:

sudo journalctl -u mysql --since "2 hours ago"

Kernel evidence can reveal an out-of-memory kill or storage error that never appears in the MySQL log:

sudo journalctl -k --since "2 hours ago"
# or, on systems that provide it:
sudo dmesg -T | tail -n 200

When an operation fails or a bug is suspected, Oracle’s guidance is to look at the MySQL server error log. Preserve the final InnoDB line exactly; wording such as an assertion, “page corruption,” “unable to open tablespace,” or ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT determines the next branch.

Run the server in the foreground when possible

A foreground start makes the failure visible and prevents a service manager from immediately launching another copy. Use the same defaults file and account that the service uses; do not improvise a different datadir or permissions:

sudo systemctl stop mysql
sudo -u mysql mysqld --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/my.cnf --console

Paths and the service account vary by distribution. If the foreground process prints a stack trace, save it before stopping the process. For hangs, lock problems, or dictionary and tablespace investigation, enable the relevant InnoDB monitor only after the original files have been copied and the instance is stable enough to inspect.

Classify the failure before choosing a fix

Observed evidence Likely class What to do next
mysqld exits with an assertion, signal, or stack trace Process crash or software defect Save the trace, version, configuration, and preceding InnoDB message; test whether a recent upgrade or configuration change correlates with it.
Kernel or service log says the process was killed; no InnoDB shutdown sequence Out-of-memory condition or external termination Check memory limits, cgroup/container limits, swap, disk-full conditions, and administrator or orchestration actions before altering InnoDB files.
Startup reaches “starting crash recovery” and repeats after every restart Recovery cannot finish, often because of corruption or unavailable storage Stop blind restarts, clone the datadir, and plan a controlled extraction or restore.
An explicit redo-log corruption message, including ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT Damaged or incompatible redo data Match the message to the exact MySQL release and restore or extract from a preserved copy; do not copy redo files from another instance.
A table or tablespace cannot be opened Missing, inaccessible, or physically damaged tablespace Verify paths, permissions, mount points, and storage health, then use a known-good backup or logical extraction if the server can start.
Only particular workloads fail while the server remains up Deadlock, resource pressure, or an application/query issue Inspect deadlock and resource diagnostics, tune the workload, and take a backup before any table operation.

These symptoms can overlap. A defective disk can corrupt a redo page and later trigger an assertion; an OOM kill can leave a normal crash-recovery workload on the next start. Use the final error, not the first client-visible symptom, to select the remedy.

If MySQL still starts: secure a backup and inspect safely

A clean start is not proof that the data is healthy. InnoDB may have recovered enough to accept connections while a damaged page remains unread. Once the server is running normally, take a complete backup and verify that the backup can be read. Keep the backup outside the original storage system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check only after the instance is stable

Run CHECK TABLE on suspected tables when the instance has enough capacity to inspect them. Limit the check to tables implicated by the log or by repeatable application errors rather than launching an expensive check across a busy production system. Save the result and the table definition.

CHECK TABLE database_name.table_name;

For an offline or maintenance-window check, the command-line client can issue the same statement. A successful check does not certify every page, and a failed check does not make REPAIR TABLE an appropriate answer: InnoDB tables are not repaired with the MyISAM repair workflow. The safe pattern is to export readable rows, create a fresh table, and load the export, or restore the table from a trusted physical or logical backup.

Look for the cause before it recurs

  • Review disk health, filesystem errors, controller or virtual-disk alerts, and SMART or platform telemetry where available.
  • Confirm that the datadir, redo location, temporary directory, and binary-log destination have free space and stable mounts.
  • Compare memory limits and workload changes with the time of the incident; an operating-system kill requires a resource fix, not a force-recovery setting.
  • Review upgrade and downgrade history. Recovery behavior and redo-log layout are release-dependent.

When startup recovery fails: preserve, clone, then extract

If every normal start stops at InnoDB recovery, do not keep cycling the service. A restart does not give the engine a new chance if the same damaged page or log record is encountered; it only adds noise and can complicate evidence collection.

Prepare an isolated recovery copy

  1. Stop MySQL and confirm that no mysqld process still has the original files open.
  2. Create a storage snapshot or a complete clone. Perform experiments on the clone whenever possible; retain the original as read-only evidence.
  3. Check ownership and permissions on the clone, but do not “repair” files by deleting ibdata, undo files, or redo files.
  4. Use a separate destination with enough space for a logical dump. A dump written into the damaged datadir can fill the same filesystem and destroy your recovery margin.

Start with innodb_force_recovery=1

Add the setting under the [mysqld] section of the recovery copy’s configuration:

innodb_force_recovery=1

Start that copy and watch the foreground output and error log. The setting suppresses selected recovery work so that the server may open far enough for reads. It does not repair pages, reconstruct missing files, or validate transaction consistency.

If level 1 still cannot start, stop the copy, change only the value to 2, and try again. Continue one level at a time. Do not jump directly to 6 simply because an online post suggests it; each higher level disables more normal InnoDB behavior and reduces what can be trusted.

What the six levels mean

Value Effect and use Risk or limitation
1 Ignore selected corrupt pages so the instance may start. Use first; readable data can still be incomplete or inconsistent.
2 Stop background master-thread work. Background cleanup and normal maintenance are not performed.
3 Skip transaction rollback (undo) during recovery. Uncommitted work is not rolled back normally; treat output as an emergency extract only.
4 Disable insert-buffer merge. Values 4 and above are considered dangerous by MySQL and can permanently corrupt data files; the instance may be effectively read-only.
5 Skip undo-log scanning. Transaction state cannot be reconstructed normally, so consistency is not assured.
6 Skip redo roll-forward. Pages can remain obsolete because redo is not applied; this is a last-resort extraction mode.

Oracle MySQL permits nonzero values from 1 through 6. Its warning for values 4 or greater is especially important: those levels can permanently corrupt data files. A successful start at any level means only that the process opened under reduced recovery rules; it does not mean the database is repaired.

Dump readable data while the copy is up

Connect locally and export as much as possible to the separate destination. A typical first attempt is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mysqldump --all-databases --quick --skip-lock-tables
  --routines --events --triggers > /recovery/mysql-rescue.sql

Options must match your authentication, server version, and object set. If a single damaged table aborts an all-database dump, dump databases or tables separately and record each failure. Use small batches where a large result set exhausts memory or causes a read to hit the damaged page. Preserve the dump’s stderr output, and test that the SQL file is complete rather than assuming that a command that produced a file succeeded.

Do not write to application tables, run repair statements, or treat forced-recovery mode as a production service. The objective is extraction, not continued operation.

Rebuild or restore instead of declaring the files fixed

After extracting data, remove the forced-recovery setting from the configuration. Do not turn the same damaged datadir back into production merely because it once started. Build a clean instance with the target MySQL release, apply compatible configuration, and restore either a verified physical backup or the logical dump.

  1. Install or prepare a clean server with storage capacity, filesystem settings, and permissions appropriate for the workload.
  2. Use the same MySQL major release unless a planned upgrade path has been tested. Do not mix system tables, redo files, or other internal files from unrelated datadirs.
  3. Restore the known-good physical backup when it is more complete and trustworthy than the emergency dump. Otherwise create the schemas and load the validated SQL export.
  4. Recreate users, grants, scheduled events, routines, and triggers from separately verified exports; confirm that security objects were not omitted.
  5. Run representative reads and writes in a staging or maintenance environment before directing application traffic to the rebuilt server.
  6. Compare row counts and key business totals with the last known-good backup. Investigate every dump error and every table that could not be read.
  7. Take a fresh full backup of the rebuilt instance and verify a restore procedure before retiring the preserved original.

If recovery cannot be completed and no trustworthy logical extraction is possible, recovery from backup may be necessary. For suspected hardware faults, repeated page corruption, or production data loss, involve a qualified database-recovery specialist or support service and provide the preserved image, logs, version, and timeline.

Special cases that need a different response

Redo-log corruption

Redo files are part of one instance’s recovery history. Never copy redo files from an unrelated datadir, even if the filenames look identical. Redo layout and behavior vary by MySQL release; the ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT error message was added in MySQL 8.0.30. Match the exact release and the error text before following a vendor-specific recovery procedure. A clean backup or a forced-recovery dump followed by a rebuild is safer than deleting or swapping redo files blindly.

Checkpoint and dictionary recovery changes

From MySQL 8.0.26, checkpoint advancement is restricted until redo recovery and dictionary-metadata transfer complete. A server can therefore appear to remain in recovery longer than an older release, or expose a failure that an earlier version handled differently. Do not infer that a longer pause alone proves a hang; correlate it with the error log, I/O progress, and the exact release.

Missing or inaccessible tablespaces

First verify that the volume is mounted, the path in the configuration is correct, and the MySQL account can read the files. Check whether a per-table tablespace was moved, renamed, or deleted during a filesystem migration. Restoring the missing tablespace from a matching backup is the integrity-preserving solution. Creating an empty file with the same name does not recreate its metadata or rows.

Assertions and repeatable software crashes

Save the assertion text, stack trace, server version, operating system, and the smallest reproducible workload. Test on a clone or staging host and review release-specific fixes before changing data files. If the crash follows an upgrade, do not downgrade by pointing the older binary at an altered datadir without a supported migration plan.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deadlocks and resource pressure

A deadlock normally rolls back one transaction and leaves the server running; it is not the same as an InnoDB crash. Capture deadlock diagnostics, identify the competing statements, and add appropriate indexing, transaction ordering, or retry logic. For memory pressure, fix the process limit, connection surge, buffer sizing, or workload that caused the operating system to kill mysqld. Force recovery cannot solve either problem.

Choosing between extraction and restore

Condition Preferred path Why
Server starts, corruption is not confirmed, and a recent backup exists Backup, targeted checks, and root-cause investigation Preserves normal transaction behavior while you gather evidence.
Server starts only with force recovery and rows are readable Logical extraction, then clean rebuild Force recovery is reversible as a setting but does not repair the source files.
Levels 1–3 cannot start; levels 4–6 are the only way to read data Clone first, extract minimally, and plan immediate rebuild or restore Higher levels can permanently corrupt files and omit recovery work.
A verified physical backup is recent and complete Restore it, then validate and replay separately retained changes if available Restoring known-good pages generally offers stronger integrity than salvaging damaged ones.
No usable backup and repeated physical corruption or hardware faults Specialist recovery assistance Further writes or ad-hoc file manipulation can reduce the remaining recovery options.

The deciding variables are whether mysqld starts, whether the damage is logical or physical, how much data loss is acceptable, how recent and restorable the backups are, the MySQL version, required downtime, and whether the action can be reversed. Forced recovery optimizes for getting readable rows out; restore and rebuild optimize for a trustworthy database.

Validate the rebuilt server and prevent another crash loop

  • Read every dump and restore error, not just the final exit code. Re-run failed tables independently and document data that could not be extracted.
  • Run application-level queries, integrity checks, and representative writes against the rebuilt instance. Confirm foreign-key relationships and business totals where those checks apply.
  • Keep the original image and logs until validation and the retention policy say they can be released.
  • Test backups by restoring them to an isolated host on a schedule; a backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
  • Monitor the MySQL error log, filesystem health, disk capacity, memory pressure, and restart events. Alert on repeated recovery starts rather than allowing an orchestrator to restart indefinitely.
  • Record the exact MySQL release and configuration with each backup. Redo behavior, recovery rules, and system-table compatibility are version-sensitive.
  • Document a runbook that names who can stop the service, where snapshots are stored, how to obtain a foreground log, and when to escalate to a specialist.
