How to Fix .htaccess Problems on WordPress

Learn the safest way to repair WordPress .htaccess problems, from isolating post-edit 500 errors to regenerating rewrite rules and fixing pretty-permalink 404s.

The safest WordPress .htaccess repair is: save a copy, temporarily rename the file, test the site, then regenerate the rewrite rules from Settings > Permalinks. If the site still fails, inspect the server logs and involve the hosting administrator. This sequence separates a damaged Apache rules file from PHP, plugin, permission, and server-configuration problems without deleting your only recovery copy.

What .htaccess does in a WordPress installation

.htaccess is a per-directory configuration file read by the Apache HTTP Server. A standard WordPress installation uses it primarily to send “pretty” URLs such as /news/example-post/ to WordPress’s front controller, index.php. It can also contain host, security, caching, redirect, or plugin directives, so replacing it blindly can remove working settings.

The file normally sits in the document root—the directory containing wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes. Dotfiles are hidden by many FTP clients and file managers. A server running nginx or IIS does not use Apache .htaccess rules; those environments require their own configuration format and often their host’s support team.

WordPress describes a corrupted .htaccess file as the most likely cause of some immediate HTTP 500 errors. That does not mean every 500 is an .htaccess problem: a PHP fatal error, exhausted memory, incompatible plugin, or unsupported Apache directive can produce the same status.

Choose the repair route from the symptom

Symptom or situation First action What the result tells you
HTTP 500 starts immediately after editing .htaccess Back up the file, rename it to .htaccess_old, and test the site If the site returns, a rule or directive in the old file is the likely trigger
Pretty-permalink URLs return 404, while the home page works Check Apache mod_rewrite, then flush permalinks Missing rewrite support or missing rules is more likely than a PHP failure
WordPress says .htaccess is not writable Copy the displayed rewrite block into the root file manually The rules can work even when WordPress cannot write the file itself
No .htaccess is visible Turn on hidden-file display and verify the server type You may be looking at a hidden file, a different document root, or a non-Apache server
WordPress was moved into a subdirectory Use rules and a RewriteBase matching that path, then save permalinks A root-oriented rule set may not route requests to the moved installation
Managed hosting blocks Apache changes Pause local edits and ask the host for its supported procedure The provider may control overrides, ownership, or the web-server configuration

Across all cases, keep the order conservative: make a backup, isolate with a temporary rename, test, and regenerate only after you know which layer is failing.

Back up the current file before changing anything

Download or copy the file

  1. Open SFTP, FTP, or the hosting file manager and navigate to the WordPress document root.
  2. Enable an option such as Show hidden files or Force showing hidden files. Files beginning with a dot are hidden by convention.
  3. Download .htaccess to your computer, or duplicate it on the server as .htaccess_backup_YYYY-MM-DD. Keep the original contents intact, including comments and directives added by the host or plugins.
  4. Record the file’s original permissions and owner if your file manager displays them. This makes it easier to restore access after testing.

Confirm you can recover without the dashboard

If a 500 error prevents WordPress administration from loading, make sure you can still reach SFTP, FTP, SSH, or the host’s file manager before you edit. Do not depend on the dashboard as your only recovery route. If you have a full hosting backup, note its restore procedure, but still preserve the current .htaccess so you do not lose recent redirects or security rules.

Fix an HTTP 500 caused by a bad .htaccess edit

1. Rename the file instead of deleting it

  1. In the site root, rename .htaccess to .htaccess_old. Renaming is reversible and prevents Apache from reading the suspected file.
  2. Load the home page in a private browser window. Test an ordinary post URL, the login page, and one static asset if they are available.
  3. Allow for a page-cache or reverse-proxy delay, then test again. A cached error can outlive the file change.

If the site loads after the rename, the old file contains a malformed directive, unsupported option, conflicting rewrite, or plugin-generated rule. WordPress’s documented first isolation step is to rename the file temporarily; the official wording is, “The most likely issue is a corrupted .htaccess file.”

2. Regenerate the WordPress rules

With the site responding, sign in to WordPress and open Settings > Permalinks. You do not need to change the selected permalink structure. Visit the screen and click Save Changes; this flushes the rewrite rules and, when the file is writable, writes a fresh WordPress block.

WordPress documents the behavior plainly: “Visiting the Permalinks screen triggers a flush of rewrite rules.” Re-save once, then test the home page, a post, a page, a category, and the login URL.

3. Reintroduce non-WordPress directives carefully

If the regenerated file fixes the 500, do not paste the entire old file back at once. Compare the backup with the new file and restore one separate directive group at a time, testing after each change. Redirects, cache rules, access controls, and plugin snippets should remain outside the # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress markers so a later permalink save does not overwrite them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a particular addition brings the 500 back, remove it and ask the host whether that directive is supported in your Apache version and hosting plan. A rule copied from a different server can use an unavailable module or an option forbidden by the host.

If renaming does not clear the 500

Restore the backup name only after you have a copy, then inspect the Apache and PHP error logs at the timestamp of a fresh request. A persistent 500 points away from the file and toward PHP, a plugin or theme, filesystem permissions, memory limits, or server configuration. Your host can identify the exact directive or application exception from those logs; the browser’s generic 500 page cannot.

Regenerate .htaccess from the WordPress dashboard

Normal writable-file procedure

  1. Log in to WordPress.
  2. Go to Settings > Permalinks.
  3. Confirm the intended permalink option. Do not switch structures merely to force a rewrite.
  4. Click Save Changes, even if you changed nothing.
  5. Open a post URL and a page URL in a new browser tab. Confirm that both return content rather than a 404.

This action flushes WordPress’s rewrite rules. If Apache allows WordPress to write in the document root, WordPress can create or update .htaccess automatically.

When WordPress reports that the file is not writable

The Permalinks screen displays the exact rewrite block WordPress wants you to use. Copy that block, connect through SFTP, FTP, or the host file manager, and paste it into the root .htaccess. Preserve unrelated host-specific directives outside the WordPress markers. Save the file, return to the Permalinks screen, and test several URLs.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Do not make the file globally writable as a quick fix. Review its owner and permissions with the hosting provider or server administrator. The account running the web server and the account used for file management must be arranged safely; a permission change that fixes one write operation can create a security or update problem.

Use the standard single-site WordPress rules when needed

For a WordPress installation in the web root, the baseline block published by WordPress is:

# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
# END WordPress

Paste this only for a root installation and only after preserving any existing directives. The RewriteBase / line represents the root URL path. A subdirectory installation needs a matching path, and a host may add its own required lines. If the host has supplied a different block, use that supported block rather than combining snippets from unrelated sites.

Fix pretty-permalink 404 errors

Verify that Apache can rewrite requests

A working home page with 404 errors on post or page URLs commonly indicates that Apache’s mod_rewrite module is disabled or that the rewrite rules are missing. WordPress requires mod_rewrite for Apache pretty permalinks. Ask the host to confirm that the module is loaded and that the site’s directory permits the required overrides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the active rule block

Open the root .htaccess and confirm that the WordPress markers and front-controller rules are present. A typo in RewriteRule, a missing backslash in index.php, or a condition removed from the block can send valid requests to the wrong location. Keep the file as plain text and avoid rich-text editors that add quotation marks or invisible characters.

Flush and test in a controlled order

  1. Save the current file.
  2. Visit Settings > Permalinks and click Save Changes.
  3. Test a post, a page, a category archive, and a URL containing a trailing slash if your structure uses one.
  4. Test from a private window or clear the relevant cache so you are not reading an old 404 response.

If only one content type fails, check that content’s slug, status, parent path, and any redirect or security rules outside the WordPress block. If every pretty URL fails, return to the mod_rewrite, override, and document-root checks.

Resolve permissions, ownership, and write failures

What WordPress needs

For mod_rewrite permalinks, WordPress needs a way to write the root .htaccess when it regenerates rules. A file can appear editable to an FTP user yet remain unwritable to the PHP process because the owner, group, or directory permissions differ.

Safer corrective steps

  • Ask the host which user and group should own files in the document root.
  • Compare the ownership and permissions of .htaccess with nearby WordPress files created by the same installation.
  • Use the host’s documented permission values rather than applying a broad, world-writable setting.
  • After a change, save the Permalinks screen once and confirm that the file timestamp and contents update as expected.

On managed hosting, the provider may intentionally prevent application-level changes to Apache overrides. In that case, request the supported rewrite configuration instead of repeatedly changing permissions.

Find a missing .htaccess file

Check hidden files and the correct document root

Enable hidden-file display in the FTP client or file manager. Then verify that you are in the directory containing wp-config.php, wp-admin, and wp-content. A domain can point to a different document root than the one you first opened, especially when several sites share an account.

Let WordPress create it

If the server is Apache, the installation is in the expected directory, and the account permits writing, visit Settings > Permalinks and save. WordPress can create the file when it has the required access. If it presents a rules block instead, create a plain-text file named exactly .htaccess—including the leading dot and no .txt extension—and paste the displayed block.

Confirm the server type

On nginx or IIS, the absence of .htaccess may be normal. nginx uses server configuration, while IIS uses its own rewrite configuration. Do not upload Apache directives to those servers; ask the host how WordPress permalinks are configured in that environment.

Repair a WordPress installation in a subdirectory

If WordPress is installed at a path such as /blog rather than the domain root, the rewrite base and target path must reflect that location. A root block with RewriteBase / can route requests incorrectly or create loops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the installation directory and the Site Address and WordPress Address values under Settings > General.
  2. Back up the existing file in the directory that contains the installation.
  3. Use the rewrite block shown by that installation’s Permalinks screen, rather than copying a root-install block.
  4. Save the Permalinks screen after moving directories or changing URL settings.
  5. Test both the subdirectory home page and several nested post and page URLs.

After a move, also check redirects, hard-coded asset URLs, and any parent-directory rules. A rule in the domain root can affect requests before the subdirectory’s own file is read.

Account for managed hosting and server policies

Hosts differ in whether they enable mod_rewrite, allow AllowOverride directives, permit custom options, or centralize rewrite rules outside the account. Managed WordPress users should consult the host’s Apache or permalink documentation before changing server configuration. Ask support to confirm:

  • whether the site runs Apache, nginx, IIS, or a proxy in front of another server;
  • whether .htaccess overrides are enabled for the document root;
  • whether mod_rewrite is loaded;
  • which owner and permissions are expected for the file; and
  • where Apache and PHP error logs can be viewed.

Give support the exact timestamp, requested URL, HTTP status, and the reversible change you made. Do not send credentials or a full configuration containing secrets.

Read logs when the simple repair does not work

A browser only reports the status code. The server error log can identify an “invalid command,” “directive not allowed,” rewrite loop, permission denial, or PHP fatal error. Compare a request before and after renaming the file, and record whether the failure affects every URL or only one path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Invalid command or directive: remove or replace the unsupported line and ask the host which Apache module is available.
  • Rewrite loop: inspect redirect rules, HTTPS rules, and subdirectory paths outside the WordPress block.
  • Permission denied: correct ownership or directory access with the host.
  • PHP fatal error: restore the known-good .htaccess and troubleshoot the plugin, theme, PHP version, or memory limit separately.

Change one thing at a time and keep a timestamped copy. That preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail and makes escalation faster.

Validate the repair before declaring it fixed

  • Open the home page, a published post, a page, a category or tag archive, and the login page.
  • Check both logged-out and logged-in behavior; caching and access rules can differ.
  • Request a nonexistent URL and confirm that WordPress returns its normal 404 page rather than a server 500.
  • Check images, CSS, JavaScript, feeds, and the XML sitemap if your site uses them.
  • Review the final file for balanced markers, accidental smart quotes, duplicate rewrite engines, and directives copied from another server.
  • Keep the backup until traffic, administration, and scheduled tasks have worked normally for a reasonable period.

Prevent future .htaccess failures

  • Save a dated copy before installing a plugin that changes redirects, caching, security, or URL handling.
  • Keep WordPress’s generated block intact and place custom rules outside its markers.
  • Use a staging site or maintenance window for complex rewrite changes.
  • Document the server type, document root, subdirectory path, and expected ownership.
  • After every change, test a representative URL set instead of checking only the home page.
  • Retain access to SFTP, FTP, or the host file manager so a dashboard outage does not prevent rollback.

When to stop editing locally

Stop and escalate when renaming the file does not change the error, when the host forbids overrides, when the server is not Apache, or when the logs show a PHP or platform failure. The correct repair may be a central server rule, a permissions correction, or an application rollback rather than another edit to .htaccess. A hosting provider’s server-configuration support can make that distinction without risking repeated production outages.
