If moving objects look smeared, camera pans seem choppy, or films look unnaturally smooth, your TV’s motion processing may be involved—but these are different symptoms. First identify what you see, then adjust the matching control or turn motion smoothing off to compare. There is no best setting for every TV or viewer.
Motion blur, judder, and the soap opera effect: what’s the difference?
- Motion blur: Moving objects look fuzzy or smeared. Samsung describes blur as moving objects becoming fuzzy. Samsung’s motion settings guide explains the distinction.
- Judder: Movement looks rough or uneven, often during a camera pan or zoom. Samsung says judder can occur when a source has fewer frames than the TV displays.
- Soap opera effect: Film or TV motion looks unusually smooth, unlike the intended film look. Samsung notes that many films are shot at 24 frames per second; interpolation can make that motion appear smoother than expected. Whether you like the result is a matter of preference. RTINGS’ explanation of the soap opera effect provides further background.
These symptoms can call for different adjustments. A blur-reduction control and a judder-reduction control are separate on some models, so changing one may not address the other.

Why does my 4K TV look blurry during fast scenes?
First check whether the picture is fuzzy only when something moves, or whether it is blurry even in a still image. This guide addresses motion-related symptoms and the TV’s built-in processing. If the picture is consistently out of focus, motion settings may not be the cause.
For motion-related fuzziness, look for a blur-reduction control. If the problem is uneven movement on pans or zooms, look for judder reduction instead. Menu names and available adjustments vary by brand, model, region, input, and software version; the controls are not universal even among TVs from the same manufacturer.

How do I turn off motion smoothing?
Turn the smoothing feature off, then replay the same scene and compare. This is a useful way to tell whether interpolation is creating the look you dislike. Samsung warns that its Auto setting can switch the feature based on program type, so Auto may not keep processing off for all content. The exact path and labels vary by model.
Samsung: Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity
- Open Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Auto Motion Plus Settings or Picture Clarity Settings. The label depends on the TV.
- Select Off to disable the motion feature, then view the same scene again.
- If the TV offers separate blur and judder controls, use the one that matches the symptom rather than changing both at once.
Samsung documents these settings in its official support guide. If your menus differ, check the support page or manual for your exact model.

LG: TruMotion
Look for TruMotion in the picture settings. LG’s guide describes paths for webOS 1.0–3.0, but those older paths are not universal current instructions, and LG says some models may not include TruMotion. Consult the manual or support page for your model rather than assuming a path applies. LG’s TruMotion guide has the version-specific details.

Adjust blur or judder without adding unwanted artifacts
If you do not want all motion processing off, use a Custom or User mode if your TV provides one. Change one control at a time and compare the same scene so you can tell which adjustment helped.
- For fuzzy moving objects: Try the TV’s Blur Reduction or De-Blur control, if available. LG’s manual describes De-Blur as reducing motion blur.
- For rough pans or zooms: Try Judder Reduction or De-Judder, if available. Samsung describes judder as rough motion when the source frame rate is lower than the display rate; an older LG manual labels a user control De-Judder.
- If the image looks artificial or develops artifacts: Reduce the processing or turn it off and compare again. The official guidance identifies adjustable controls, not a numeric setting that is right for everyone.
Samsung’s guidance says smoothing may suit sports more than films, while viewers differ in whether they prefer it. A low or custom setting is worth comparing with Off if your TV offers it, but stronger processing can change the look of film motion. Samsung’s guide discusses the controls and content types.
Quick Recap
A quick troubleshooting order
- Identify the symptom. Decide whether objects are fuzzy, pans are rough, or film motion looks too smooth.
- Find the model-specific motion setting. Use the TV’s picture menu or its official manual if the label is unclear.
- Compare with processing off. Replay the same scene; on Samsung, select Off rather than Auto if your goal is to disable smoothing for the comparison.
- Adjust only the matching control, if desired. Try blur reduction for fuzziness or judder reduction for uneven pans, changing the control gradually.
- Keep the setting that looks right to you. If processing introduces artifacts or an unwanted film look, reduce it or leave it off.
