In the United States, look up the pharmacy in the official pharmacy-board register for the relevant state and confirm its identity and address. Before ordering, check that it requires a prescription for prescription medicines, provides a U.S. address and telephone number, and makes a licensed pharmacist available. These checks can help you assess the seller; they cannot prove that a particular medicine is genuine. Outside the U.S., use the relevant national regulator or official pharmacy register.
How to check a U.S. online pharmacy’s license
Start with the pharmacy board for the state relevant to the pharmacy and the patient. FDA’s BeSafeRx guidance links to state boards and provides a location tool. Compare the seller’s actual business name and address with the official record; a logo or verification badge displayed on the seller’s own website is not a substitute for checking the regulator’s register.

FDA advises consumers not to use a pharmacy that does not appear in the database. A pharmacy may need to be licensed both where it operates and where its patient is located, so check the requirements relevant to both locations rather than assuming one listing covers every state.
Other checks to make before ordering
- Prescription: A legitimate pharmacy requires a valid prescription for prescription-only medicine. An offer to sell it without one is a warning sign.
- Contact information: Look for a physical U.S. address and a telephone number, then make sure those details are consistent with the official listing.
- Pharmacist access: The pharmacy should have a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions.
- Sales tactics: Treat unusually low prices, unsolicited offers, and spam promotions cautiously. They are warning signs, not proof by themselves that a pharmacy is fraudulent.
FDA also points consumers to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy’s Buy Safely tool, which identifies websites as “safe” or “not recommended” under its Pharmacy Verified Website Program. Use such a website-screening result as an additional check, not a replacement for confirming licensure with the regulator. A listing about a website does not authenticate the medicine in a package you receive.

How to check the medicine when it arrives
Compare the delivery with what you ordered: the medicine, strength or dosage, and packaging. Look for damage, broken seals, spelling errors, an unexpected language, or missing or inconsistent batch and expiry details between the inner and outer packaging. Check the expiry and manufacturing dates, and notice any unusual appearance, discoloration, degradation, or smell.
These observations can raise a concern, but they are not a home authenticity test. The World Health Organization warns that some falsified medical products are almost visually identical to genuine products and very difficult to detect. Normal-looking packaging therefore does not establish that the medicine is genuine.

If the product or packaging seems suspicious, do not rely on appearance to decide it is safe. Contact a pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare professional and report the concern to your national medicines regulator. If you have a serious or unexpected reaction, seek medical help promptly and use the applicable adverse-event reporting route.
What to do if you are outside the United States
Licensing systems and registers depend on the country, and sometimes on the patient’s location as well as the pharmacy’s. Use the relevant national medicines regulator or official pharmacy register rather than treating a U.S. state license or a foreign seller’s claim as decisive. In the United Kingdom, for example, GOV.UK provides an MHRA service to check whether a website is on the “Not Recommended” list. That list is a screening resource, not positive proof that a seller or a specific product is genuine.
