Check Mission Control settings, compare keyboard and gesture navigation, then inspect system activity. These steps can help distinguish an unexpected Spaces behavior or input issue from broader Mac sluggishness; Apple does not identify one universal cause or promise that a particular setting will fix the lag.
Identify the exact delay
Repeat the same action a few times and note where the pause occurs. Is it opening Mission Control, moving between Spaces, switching to an app whose windows are on another Space, or using a full-screen app? Does it happen only with a trackpad or mouse gesture, or does keyboard navigation feel slow too?

Record your Mac model, macOS version, whether an external display is connected, and whether the delay is consistent. Apple does not provide a diagnostic test specific to Mission Control lag, but these observations help separate a display or input-path difference from general sluggishness.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
- Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use: When enabled, macOS can change the order of Spaces according to recent use. If a desktop seems to move, this can feel like unexpected switching rather than a performance problem.
- When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application: When enabled, switching apps may take you to a different desktop if that app has windows there.
- Group windows by application: Review whether grouping changes how windows are presented in Mission Control.
- Displays have separate Spaces: For a Mac connected to multiple displays, check whether each display uses its own set of Spaces.
These controls affect navigation and window organization. Apple documents their behavior, but does not say that disabling any one of them cures lag. The documented controls are described in Apple’s Desktop & Dock settings guide and its guide to working in multiple Spaces.
Compare gestures with keyboard navigation
Try a keyboard route, then compare it with your usual gesture:

- Press the Mission Control key, if your keyboard has one, or press Control–Up Arrow to open Mission Control.
- Press Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow to move between Spaces.
- Alternatively, open Mission Control and select a Space from the Spaces bar.
- On a supported Mac, try the documented trackpad or mouse gesture for Mission Control and Spaces.
If keyboard navigation responds promptly but a gesture does not, investigate the input device and its settings before assuming Spaces itself is responsible. That difference is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause. Available gestures depend on the device and macOS version; see Apple’s instructions for Multi-Touch gestures and viewing windows and Spaces in Mission Control.
Check CPU and memory activity during the slowdown
Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and watch CPU activity and memory use while reproducing the delay. Note whether a recognizable app is unusually busy or unresponsive at that moment. Overall system load can accompany general sluggishness, though Apple’s documentation does not establish it as the cause of this specific Mission Control symptom.

If an identifiable app is not responding, save work where possible and close or restart that app first. Do not force quit unfamiliar system processes as a routine troubleshooting step. Apple’s Activity Monitor User Guide explains the app’s tools, and its pages cover viewing CPU activity and creating a system diagnostics report.
Use Safe Mode to check for startup software
If the lag continues, test whether the behavior changes in Safe Mode. Apple says, “Starting up your Mac in safe mode can help you identify whether issues you’re experiencing are caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.” First determine whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor, then follow the matching steps in Apple’s Safe Mode instructions.
