To see which apps can access your files, photos, contacts, camera, microphone, and other protected features, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Select a category to review the apps listed there, then switch off access an app does not need. The controls show permissions macOS manages; they do not provide a complete record of an app’s network activity or data-handling practices.
Review app permissions in Privacy & Security

Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.

Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar. Scroll the sidebar or page if needed.

Choose a category, such as Photos, Contacts, Camera, or Microphone, and review the apps and access shown.

Switch off access that an app does not need for the way you use it. If a feature stops working, return to that category and restore access.

Apple Support says apps ask for permission the first time they want to use something on your Mac, explaining how they use the information. You can adjust the resulting controls later in Privacy & Security. The available categories and app entries can vary with macOS version and which permissions apps have requested. See Apple’s Control what you share on Mac and Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac.
Which sensitive-access categories should you check?
Start with the kind of information or capability you are concerned about. These are the categories Apple documents in Privacy & Security; the exact list on your Mac may differ.

| Accessibility, Automation, Input Monitoring | Whether an app has the associated system interaction or monitoring permissions. |
| Full Disk Access | Whether an app has broad access to files on the Mac, including data from other apps and some system or administrative data. |
Apple describes the Full Disk Access permission as potentially allowing access to all files on the computer, including data from Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings for all users. Inspect this permission carefully, but a listing alone does not establish that an app is malicious or that it does not need the access for its intended function. Apple’s Control access to files and folders on Mac explains the folder controls; the broader scope of Full Disk Access is described in Controlling app access to files.
Files & Folders is not the same as Full Disk Access
Files & Folders lets you control an app’s access to particular locations, such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. Full Disk Access is a separate, broader permission. Review each category on its own rather than assuming that allowing or denying a folder permission sets the app’s access to the entire disk.

Find the equivalent controls on older macOS versions
Apple’s security guide identifies System Settings > Privacy & Security as the route for macOS 13 and later. On macOS 12 or earlier, use Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Category names and available switches can vary by version, so follow the labels visible on your Mac. Apple documents the version distinction in its Control access to files and system resources guidance.

A permission setting tells you whether macOS has granted or denied a covered kind of access. It does not by itself show what information an app sends over the internet, how long a developer retains information, or whether data accessed by the app leaves your Mac. Apple notes that file-access permission should be considered alongside the third-party app’s privacy practices. To understand why an app requests access and how its developer handles information, consult the app’s privacy policy or contact the developer.

If a permission switch is unavailable
On a work- or school-managed Mac, an administrator may set privacy permissions through device-management policies, including controls for camera, microphone, folder access, screen recording, and all-files access. If a switch cannot be changed or its state is managed, ask your organization’s IT administrator. Apple describes these administrator controls in its Privacy Preferences Policy Control payload documentation.
