If a Witcher 3 save has vanished or will not load, first protect every copy that still exists. Do not delete local data, reinstall, repeatedly save over the same slot, or restore a cloud copy until you have compared the available versions. A missing save may be under another user, account, edition, or storage location; a game that cannot save is a different problem from a save that is already corrupted.
First, identify what has gone wrong
Look at what happens when you open Load Game and try to save. The distinction matters: steps that fix a blocked save write will not repair damaged save contents, and restoring a cloud copy can replace a newer local file.

CD PROJEKT RED’s support index treats inability to save and cross-progression problems as separate issues. That is a useful way to troubleshoot: choose the procedure that matches the symptom instead of changing several storage settings at once.

Start by noting where you last saw the progress: on which platform, under which account or console user, and in which edition of the game. If you can still open the game on the original platform, check its Load Game list before assuming the file is lost. A save that is absent on a second platform may still be present on the first; a save that appears but fails to load is a different case from one that was never uploaded or synchronized.

Protect the best copy before trying a fix
Before changing cloud settings or local data, work out which copy is most likely to contain the latest progress. Check dates or timestamps where the platform shows them, and preserve copies that might be useful. A cloud copy is not automatically the newest one.
- Do not save repeatedly over the affected slot while you are investigating.
- Do not delete local console saves or choose a cloud download until you have compared the available copies.
- On PC, copy the complete
gamesavesfolder to a separate drive or external device before a clean install or other cleanup. - If a launcher reports a cloud conflict, preserve both versions where possible and compare them before choosing which one to keep.
These precautions are especially important on Nintendo Switch: Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Xbox local-save deletion also carries a risk if cloud saving is off or the console is offline.
Keep the original untouched while you investigate. On PC, make a separate copy of the whole save folder, not just the file you suspect is damaged; CD PROJEKT RED recommends copying the saves to a different drive or external device before a clean install. A USB flash drive is one possible place for a separate PC backup, but it does not repair a file or make a corrupt save readable.

A cloud service can hold an older version, or a conflict can mean the local and remote files changed separately. Decide which candidate to keep only after comparing what is available. Avoid toggling synchronization or removing local data casually, since doing so can change which copy remains accessible.
Find the save on PC
Check the local save folder
CD PROJEKT RED lists the PC save location as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. In Windows, paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar to open the folder for the signed-in Windows user. If the folder contains saves, copy the entire folder somewhere separate before reinstalling the game or removing files.
A missing entry in the game does not by itself prove that the save file is gone. Confirm that you are checking the Windows profile and game installation you actually use, and keep the original files untouched while you investigate other accounts, editions, or cloud copies.
If you use more than one Windows profile, the path is tied to the profile currently signed in. Check the profile you used when playing, rather than searching only the game’s installation directory. The support-listed location is the place to inspect for local PC save files; it is not a universal path for console saves or cloud-only copies. If no files appear there, continue checking the relevant account and cloud service instead of creating or deleting folders at random.

Use the official clean-install instructions if reinstalling is necessary
CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install guidance says to back up the saves to a different drive or external device and to disable the game’s cloud saves before proceeding. Follow that guide’s sequence rather than improvising by deleting folders. A reinstall can address an installation problem, but it does not reconstruct a corrupted save file.
Make sure the copy is safely stored before following the clean-install sequence. Disabling the game’s cloud saves is part of that specific guidance; it should not be confused with deleting local files or assuming the cloud has an intact backup. If the immediate issue is that a save will not load, first look for an intact alternate copy. Reinstalling the game is not a substitute for preserving or recovering save data.

Resolve Steam Cloud conflicts cautiously
Steam says it cannot automatically choose which version to keep when local and cloud files have changed separately. Its support team also cannot recover lost saves or decide the conflict for you. If both copies are accessible, preserve them and compare their dates or contents before selecting the version you want. Do not assume that the cloud copy is newer simply because it is online.
This is a choice between versions, not a repair procedure. If Steam presents a conflict, do not click through without checking which copy is likely to hold the latest progress. The same caution applies if you are unsure whether synchronization completed: preserve what is accessible, compare dates where available, then choose deliberately. Steam’s inability to decide between changed copies means the player must select the one to keep.

If the game runs but cannot create new saves, check whether Windows security software is preventing it from writing to a protected folder. CD PROJEKT RED specifically identifies Controlled folder access as a setting to inspect and names Windows Defender and Bitdefender as examples of security software that may be involved.
- Open the security software you use and locate its Controlled folder access or protected-folder controls.
- Check the allowed-app list for The Witcher 3. If the game is blocked, use the security software’s option to allow the game.
- Start the game and try creating a new save in a new slot.
- If saving still fails, check the security software’s block or notification history and confirm that you allowed the correct game executable rather than disabling protection altogether.
This procedure addresses permission to write a save. It does not repair a save that already exists but is unreadable. Keep those problems separate when testing whether the fix worked.
In practical terms, test the ability to save with a new slot rather than overwriting the save you are trying to protect. If the security software did not block the game, do not assume that changing its settings will recover missing or damaged contents. CD PROJEKT RED’s advice is to check the protected-folder allow list; it is not a recommendation to turn off security protection entirely.
Restore progress across platforms with cross-progression
If your progress is on another supported version of the game, CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression process uses a CD PROJEKT RED account to upload a save from one platform and access it on another. The official instructions require the game to be updated, the account to be connected, and a new save to be created after enabling the feature. The uploaded save is marked with a cloud icon.
- Update the game on the platform that currently has the save.
- Open Load Game and use the Cross Progression control to connect the game to a CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save on that version. Check for the cloud icon indicating that the save was uploaded.
- On the destination platform, connect using the same CD PROJEKT RED account, then check Load Game for the uploaded save.
Connecting the account is not a substitute for uploading a save: the source version must have a save created after cross-progression is enabled. CD PROJEKT RED describes the feature this way: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.”
For Nintendo Switch, CD PROJEKT RED says players who used the older Steam/GOG cloud-save integration need to use cross-progression, introduced in update 4.04, to transfer saves. The older integration and cross-progression are not interchangeable steps.
If a save is still absent on the destination, recheck the process from the beginning: the source game should be updated to the latest patch, the account must be connected on both versions, and the source save needs to have been created after cross-progression was enabled. Look for the cloud icon on the source save as an upload confirmation. Account connection by itself does not demonstrate that the desired save was uploaded.

Cross-progression also does not make every edition combination compatible. Before relying on it, confirm that the destination version includes the game content needed by the save. If the progress is missing only on Switch and you previously used the older Steam/GOG integration, use the cross-progression route associated with update 4.04 rather than expecting the older integration to transfer it.
Check the game edition and expansion content
A save can appear to be missing or incompatible when the installed product differs from the one that created it. CD PROJEKT RED says that on consoles, local saves for the regular game and GOTY/Complete Edition are treated as separate products and are not compatible as local saves. When moving progress from the base game, the developer points players to cross-progression instead.
Expansion content also matters when loading through cross-progression:
- A save from the base game can load in Complete Edition.
- A Complete Edition save will not load in the base version unless the expansions and DLC used by that save are installed there.
Before concluding that a save has been lost, compare the source and destination editions and confirm that the destination has the required content. If changing platforms, also verify that you connected the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both versions.
These are two separate compatibility checks. First ask whether the source and destination are the same product; console local saves for the regular game and GOTY/Complete Edition are not interchangeable. Then check downloadable content: a base-game save can load in Complete Edition, but the reverse requires the base-version installation to have the expansions and DLC used by that save. A failure to load in an incompatible destination does not, by itself, show that the original save has been erased.

Nintendo’s general guidance for corrupted save data is to check for console and game updates, restart the console, run Check for Corrupt Data, and confirm that you are using the correct user. If the title supports Save Data Cloud and you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a cloud backup may offer another copy. Deleting a Nintendo Switch user deletes that user’s save data, so do not remove a user as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Use these general checks without skipping the preservation step. Confirm the intended user first, since the save data belongs to that user, and avoid deleting a user to try to make the save reappear. Updates, a restart, and the console’s Check for Corrupt Data option are Nintendo’s general troubleshooting steps; they are not a promise that a damaged save can be reconstructed.
Compare the console and cloud timestamps before restoring
- Open System Settings on the Switch.
- Choose Data Management, then Save Data Cloud Backup.
- Select the intended user and The Witcher 3.
- Compare the displayed timestamps for the console save and latest cloud backup.
- If the console copy is newer, preserve it before taking any restore action. If the cloud copy is newer and has the progress you need, download that copy.
Restoring an older cloud backup can remove newer console progress. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered, so make the timestamp comparison before downloading or replacing anything.
This comparison is the key decision point. If the console copy is newer, a cloud download could replace more recent progress; do not choose it just because it is available. If the cloud timestamp is newer, check that it is associated with the intended Switch user and contains the progress you need before restoring. Save Data Cloud requires a supported title and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, so a missing cloud backup may mean that this route is unavailable rather than that the local file is necessarily gone.

Troubleshoot Xbox saves without deleting them first
CD PROJEKT RED’s Xbox instructions recommend a full power cycle before considering local-save deletion:
- Fully power down the Xbox.
- Unplug it from power for at least two minutes.
- Reconnect power and restart the console.
- Launch the game and check whether the expected save appears or synchronizes.
Clearing local saves is a higher-risk step. CD PROJEKT RED warns that progress may be lost if cloud saving is disabled or the console is offline. The developer says the game should re-sync on restart when cloud saving is on; do not proceed with local-data clearing unless you have confirmed the conditions for that synchronization.
In particular, an offline console cannot be assumed to have a current cloud copy, and cloud saving being disabled removes the basis for expecting the game to re-sync. Try the recommended full shutdown and power cycle first. If that does not resolve the issue, pause before clearing local data and verify that cloud saving is enabled and the console can connect so the game can synchronize on restart.
CD PROJEKT RED’s Xbox save-information page lists eight manual-save slots, excluding checkpoints and autosaves. That figure is specific to the developer’s Xbox support information; do not assume it describes every platform or a later game version.
Choose a recovery copy without overwriting progress
Potential copies can include a manual save, autosave, checkpoint, PC local file, launcher cloud copy, Nintendo cloud backup, Xbox cloud copy, or CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression save. Whether one will help depends on the platform, account, edition, settings, and whether it synchronized before the loss. Compare candidates on the following points before restoring:
- Recency: Is the copy newer than the save currently on the device?
- Ownership: Does it belong to the correct platform account and, on Switch, the intended console user?
- Compatibility: Does the destination use a compatible edition and include the required expansion content?
- Synchronization: Was cloud saving enabled, and does the service show a copy from after the progress you want to recover?
- Risk: Could downloading, syncing, clearing local data, or saving over a slot replace the only usable copy?
Keep each platform’s recovery process separate. Steam Cloud, Nintendo Save Data Cloud, Xbox cloud saves, and CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression are different systems; a successful sign-in to one does not confirm that another has a current copy.
Use the symptom and platform to narrow the route rather than trying every restore option. For a local PC save, inspect and back up the listed folder. For a Steam conflict, compare the local and cloud versions because Steam cannot choose between separately changed files. For Switch, compare console and cloud timestamps before downloading. For Xbox, power-cycle first and avoid local-save deletion unless cloud conditions are confirmed. For a save moving between platforms, verify the CD PROJEKT RED account, upload indicator, patch level, edition, and expansions.
No recovery copy is guaranteed to work. A manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local file, or cloud version helps only if it survived, belongs to the right user or account, is compatible with the installed game, and contains progress from before the problem. If the newest copy is corrupted, an older intact one may be the safer choice even though it loses some progress; if every available copy is unreadable or stale, there may be no intact version to resume from.
What to expect if a save is genuinely corrupted
If a file is unreadable, look for another intact copy rather than assuming the damaged file can be repaired. An older manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local backup, or synchronized cloud save may let you resume, but only if that copy exists and is compatible with the version you are using.

CD PROJEKT RED’s official support material does not establish a general method for repairing a save that is unreadable everywhere and has no intact backup. Reinstalling the game may replace game files, but it should not be treated as a way to rebuild lost save data. Once you have checked local and applicable cloud copies, there may be no supported recovery route for a save with no surviving usable version.
That limit is important: troubleshooting a game installation or a blocked write can help the game run or create future saves, but neither action recreates the contents of an already-lost file. Preserve any questionable file and work from a separate intact copy if one exists. If there is no usable copy across the local folder, platform cloud services, or cross-progression, do not count on a general repair tool or reinstall to restore the missing progress.

Windows security software may block the game from writing to protected folders. Check Controlled folder access and the allowed-app list in the security software, including Windows Defender or Bitdefender if you use them. Allow the correct game executable if it was blocked; this addresses new save writing, not already-corrupted save contents.
