How to Fix Missing Characters and Font Rendering Problems in Retro Fonts

A box, garbled text, or jagged pixels can have different causes. Identify the failure first, then check glyph coverage, fallback, encoding, mapping, and rendering.

A missing box, garbled letters, and jagged or misplaced pixels point to different problems. First identify whether the character itself is wrong, absent from the font, mapped incorrectly, or rendered poorly; then apply the fix that matches the symptom.

Identify what is actually failing

Unicode distinguishes three broad kinds of modern text-display problems: missing font support, incorrect shaping, and incorrect or garbled characters. A square placeholder often means the selected font lacks a glyph, but not every blank position is an error: some characters are meant to be invisible or display as blank space. Inspect the actual character and its expected behavior before changing fonts or text. See the Unicode Consortium’s Display Problems? guidance.

  • A box or replacement symbol: check whether the font contains the character and whether a fallback font is available.
  • Unexpected letters or symbols: check that the stored text is being decoded with the correct encoding.
  • A character that appears but looks wrong, clipped, or misplaced: investigate character-to-glyph mapping, shaping, and the application’s renderer.

Work through the fixes in order

  1. Capture the exact text and identify the character. Copy the failing character and use the application’s character information or an appropriate character inspector to identify its Unicode code point. If the text contains a different character from the one intended, changing the font will not correct the underlying text.
  2. Check the retro font’s glyph coverage. A typeface may cover basic Latin letters but omit punctuation, accented letters, currency symbols, or entire writing systems. If the character is absent, choose a font that includes it or configure a fallback.
  3. Set a deliberate fallback. In a browser, use a font stack that keeps the retro face first and provides a suitable alternative for characters it does not support. Microsoft documents automatic font fallback and recommends ending a CSS font stack with a generic family. Confirm that the fallback actually contains the missing character; the substitute may look different from the pixel font. See Microsoft’s font fallback documentation.
  4. Check encoding if the text is garbled. The application must interpret text using the encoding in which it was stored, and web content should label its encoding correctly. Unicode’s example of Russian text saved in Windows-1251 but read under a different encoding assumption illustrates why changing the font alone cannot repair corrupted or misread text. See Unicode’s display-problem guidance.
  5. Inspect character-to-glyph mapping if the glyph exists but the wrong one appears. A font’s cmap table connects character codes to glyphs. Legacy or symbol-encoded fonts may not follow the conventions expected of an ordinary Unicode font, so check the font’s mapping and the target application’s handling before attempting to remap characters. Apple describes the cmap table; Microsoft explains OpenType platform and encoding recommendations.
  6. Compare rendering and shaping in the target app. If the intended character is present and correctly mapped, test the same text in another application or renderer, and at the font’s intended pixel size. Shaping and rendering are distinct from glyph coverage. DirectWrite uses shaping and resolution-independent layout, so output need not be pixel-identical across Windows applications or other platforms. There is no universal antialiasing switch that suits every font and renderer. See Microsoft’s DirectWrite documentation.
  7. Check the font’s license before converting or embedding it. File conversion does not remove restrictions on redistribution. Font embedding and use remain subject to the font’s licensing terms. See Microsoft’s font FAQ.

Choose a remedy that fits the problem

When a font lacks coverage, a fallback may be the quickest way to preserve readable text; when the actual text is wrong, correct its encoding or source instead. For a glyph-mapping or rendering issue, changing the font may hide the symptom without fixing its cause.

  • Coverage: Does the primary font contain every character the text requires?
  • Visual consistency: Will the fallback’s shapes and pixel scale fit the retro typeface?
  • Compatibility: Does the font mapping work in the intended app, operating system, and browser?
  • Text correctness: Is the text encoded and decoded as intended?
  • Rendering: Does the target renderer preserve the desired pixel appearance at the required size?
  • Licensing: Does the license allow the planned conversion, embedding, or redistribution?

When the exact fix depends on your setup

The right repair can vary with the font, failing characters, application, operating system, and browser. If the steps above do not resolve the issue, note those details along with the exact text and where it fails; they help distinguish missing coverage from an encoding, mapping, or renderer problem.
