Then correct the game match, request the specific fields or images you need, and verify that the image is linked in the format your frontend expects. Menu names and file conventions differ by frontend, so the steps below use ES-DE and LaunchBox examples rather than treating them as universal.
First identify what is actually missing
A game that does not appear in a library is a different problem from a visible game with an empty description or no cover. Before scraping again, locate the entry and check its status.

- Entry absent: Check whether the game was imported, assigned to the expected platform, excluded as a duplicate, or hidden by a setting or filter. LaunchBox documents these as separate reasons a game may appear to be missing. Its Metadata and Media Basics guide covers the relevant library and display distinctions.
- Entry present but title or details are wrong: The frontend may have matched the game to a different database record or may be displaying an alternate title.
- Entry present with missing art: Check whether the correct image category was requested and whether the frontend has a path or association for the image.
Fixing the category of failure first avoids repeatedly scraping an entry that is actually hidden, misclassified, or already linked to the wrong game.
Correct the search term and game match
A scraper can only return a useful result if it searches for the right name and selects the right record. Filenames often include region codes, revision labels, or other text that does not belong in a database search.

Check which name ES-DE is searching
In the ES-DE User Guide v1.2.4, the default search uses a manually set or previously scraped metadata name when one exists. If neither exists, ES-DE derives a query from the filename, removing text in parentheses and square brackets. The guide also describes an option to search using the physical filename even when metadata already exists. Review the query before applying a result; try a clean, recognizable game title or the actual filename if the first search returns nothing. See the ES-DE User Guide v1.2.4 for the version-specific controls.
Compare candidates before applying one
When several records appear, compare the title, platform, region, and release or version details. A plausible title alone is not enough: a regional edition, remake, or similarly named game can return convincing but incorrect art and metadata. Correct the match first, then scrape the desired content again.

Arcade entries may follow system- and scraper-specific matching rules, so do not assume that a console ROM naming workflow applies. Confirm the platform and the actual database record. LaunchBox users can also consult Getting Started with the LaunchBox Games Database, which describes alternate names for regional titles and spelling variations.

Request only the missing metadata or artwork
Metadata and media are separate. Metadata can include a description, release date, developer, publisher, genre, and player count. Media can include front covers, title screens, screenshots, marquees, fan art, or videos. A scrape that retrieves one category does not necessarily populate the others.

In ES-DE, filter for incomplete entries
ES-DE’s multi-scraper includes filters such as “No metadata” and “No game image,” which can help target incomplete entries instead of processing the whole library. For an individual title, open its metadata editor and use the single-game scraper. Choose the fields and media categories you actually want—such as game name, other metadata, or box covers—rather than assuming that requesting an image fills every artwork slot.
In LaunchBox, edit or correct the local entry
LaunchBox separates a game’s metadata from its media and provides ways to edit details or correct a mismatch. Use the entry’s edit or metadata workflow to verify the selected game and the displayed title, then request or add the needed media. The exact available controls can vary by LaunchBox version; its metadata and media guide explains the distinction between those data types.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect box art
If the title and other details are correct but the cover is absent, check the requested image type first. A scraper may have returned a screenshot or title screen while the frontend is displaying a box-cover slot. Confirm both the content type selected during scraping and the media type shown in the game view.

ES-DE’s guide notes that TheGamesDB covers fewer formats and systems overall, while it may have stronger PC coverage in some areas; it also notes that ScreenScraper may lack certain details. These differences do not establish a single best service for every library. If one supported database has no suitable result, try another that supports the system and content you need.

Region settings can also change the result. ES-DE documents cases where returned artwork may be in the wrong language or arcade art may be unofficial. Check the selected region and selected game record, then rescrape that individual entry if necessary.
Add an image manually when scraping cannot find one
A suitable image file on disk is not necessarily connected to a game in the frontend. Add it through the frontend’s metadata editor or its documented media-path convention, then confirm that the game entry points to the intended file and image type.
ES-DE documents manually copying existing game media into its media setup. EmulationStation-style gamelists also associate an image path with each game entry; the AmberELEC GAMELISTS.md documentation shows this per-entry image path. Because folder and filename conventions depend on the frontend and its configuration, verify the applicable instructions before placing files or editing paths.
If you use LaunchBox and discover that the game or its media is missing from the shared database, you can contribute a missing game, improved image, alternate name, or corrected release information through the LaunchBox Games Database. That can help other users, but it is separate from correcting the local game’s match or image association.
Choose a scraper based on your library
Compare services against the systems and formats in your collection, the metadata and media fields they offer, their region and language options, and how well they match your library’s naming scheme. The ES-DE guide describes differences in coverage and image types, but does not support ranking one scraper as best for every library. A reliable match for one platform or art category may not be the best choice for another.
