If the recording itself is silent or will not start, check microphone permission instead. These are separate issues, and microphone access does not make an unsupported Mac eligible for transcription.
First identify what is not working
- Audio records, but there is no transcript control: check the Mac and language requirements below.
- The recording will not start or has no sound: check Notes’ microphone permission in System Settings.
Apple says spoken words in supported languages are automatically transcribed in Notes recordings. Transcription availability also depends on language and region. Apple’s Notes guide does not promise a single fix for every missing control.

Check whether your Mac and language are eligible
Confirm the Mac has Apple silicon
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Check the chip information. Notes audio transcription requires an Apple silicon Mac with M1 or later.
If the Mac does not meet that requirement, changing microphone permissions or buying an external microphone will not add the transcription feature.
Check the device language
Apple lists these supported languages for Notes audio transcription: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Check the language set on the Mac, and make sure the spoken audio is in a supported language. Do not use Apple Intelligence summary-language lists as a substitute; those lists are not the same eligibility criteria.

Account for region availability
Apple cautions that audio transcription is not available in all languages and regions. Its guide does not establish every supported language-and-region combination, so a supported device language alone may not be enough. Check Apple’s current feature availability information for your location.
Find the transcript in the right place
The transcription control is associated with recording audio inside a note. Start or open an audio recording in Notes and look for the transcription control while recording. For an existing recording, open its details to view the transcript; Apple says you can search and copy transcript text from the audio details.

Apple says the Notes features described in its guide are available with iCloud notes, and that some features may be unavailable with accounts from other providers. If you use a non-iCloud account, test with a new recording in an iCloud note. This can help isolate an account difference, but does not override the Mac, language, or regional requirements.

If Notes is not capturing audio, check microphone access

- Quit Notes.
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Enable access for Notes if it appears in the list. Wording and controls can vary by macOS version.
- Reopen Notes and try recording again.
Apple’s microphone-permission guidance addresses recording access. Permission to record is not proof that the Mac meets Notes transcription requirements.
Use Voice Memos as a comparison, not a guaranteed workaround
Apple documents transcription in Voice Memos on macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon, with regional limitations. It can be useful to see whether another built-in recording app offers transcription on your Mac, but Voice Memos is not a guaranteed substitute for Notes. A missing Voice Memos transcript does not by itself establish why Notes lacks its control.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the documented requirements appear to be met
- Update macOS to the latest version compatible with your Mac.
- Quit and reopen Notes.
- Make a new recording in an iCloud note and check for transcription again.
- If the control is still missing, contact Apple Support. Have your Mac model and chip, macOS version, device language, region, Notes account type, and whether audio recording works ready.
Updating, restarting, and testing another note are sensible diagnostic steps, not fixes Apple guarantees for every missing transcription control.
