If your FFmpeg YouTube livestream has video but no sound, check the input stream first, then confirm FFmpeg selects and encodes the intended audio, and finally use YouTube’s Live Control Room messages to diagnose ingestion. An output-scoped -an can disable audio, while an absent or incorrect -map can leave the output without the audio you expect.
1. Check whether the input contains audio
Run your usual FFmpeg command and inspect the stream listing beneath each Input #... line. Look for an Audio: entry on the input that should supply sound.

- No audio entry: FFmpeg cannot map audio that is not present in that input. Check that you opened the correct source, capture device, and application audio route. If audio should come from another input, confirm that input is included in the command.
- An audio entry is present: note which input and audio stream contain the sound you want, then inspect the output mapping and options.
Do not start by changing YouTube settings if the FFmpeg input has no audio stream; those settings cannot create source audio.
2. Make sure FFmpeg sends the intended audio
Inspect the output stream summary and the options that apply to the output sent to YouTube. FFmpeg documents -an as disabling audio recording for that output, including automatic audio selection or mapping. A missing, incorrect, or mismatched -map can also omit the intended stream. See the FFmpeg documentation for stream selection and mapping.

Map the correct input and audio stream
If the first input contains the desired video and its first audio stream is the one you want, the mapping pattern is -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0. In a command with multiple inputs, use the input number for the source containing the audio. A filtergraph can change which streams need mapping, so adapt the mapping to your actual command and graph.

Replace INPUT, the video settings, server URL, and stream key with your actual values; keep the stream key private. This pattern is not a tested command for every input or filtergraph. Check the full command for a later output-scoped -an that might suppress audio.

After correcting the command, verify that FFmpeg’s output listing includes exactly the intended audio stream. If the input lists audio but the output does not, review -an, the input index in each -map, and any filtergraph outputs before changing YouTube settings.

3. Match YouTube’s audio requirements
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its live encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. The same guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a diagnosis of your particular stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
YouTube’s live streaming error messages cover unsupported audio codecs, missing or multiple audio streams, incorrect sample rate or bitrate, and too many audio channels. For the channel-count error described there, YouTube specifies mono or stereo—one or two channels. Follow the specific Live Control Room message rather than changing unrelated video settings.

4. Test the complete path before streaming publicly
- Start a private or unlisted test stream using the actual input and command you plan to use.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check its stream-health messages for audio errors.
- Verify playback on the test stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages.
This separates an FFmpeg output problem from a YouTube ingestion or playback problem: check what FFmpeg reports, what the Live Control Room receives, and what the test playback sounds like.
