First identify your device and Minecraft edition, then pinpoint where it fails: installing the Launcher, updating the game, signing in or validating ownership, pressing Play, or reaching a world. The right fix depends on that stage—Windows Launcher steps do not apply to every Bedrock, console, or mobile update problem.
Start by identifying the failure point
Note whether you use Windows or macOS, a console or mobile device, and Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. Then match the symptom to the workflow below. Treat each step as an option, not a guaranteed fix; avoid reinstalling until simpler account and configuration checks are complete.

- Launcher installation: the installer fails, or the Launcher will not open after installation.
- Game update: the Launcher opens, but Minecraft does not download or install an update.
- Sign-in or ownership: Play is missing or a license/purchase error appears.
- Launch: pressing Play causes a crash or the game closes.
- World or multiplayer: the game opens, but a world or server will not load.
If the Minecraft Launcher will not install
On Windows, check that Microsoft Store is signed into the Microsoft account you intend to use for Minecraft. Minecraft Help notes that downloading the Launcher installer from Minecraft.net does not remove this requirement: a Microsoft Store login is still needed. See Troubleshooting Installing the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open Microsoft Store and check the signed-in account. Sign in with the intended account if necessary.
- Try installing the Launcher through the Xbox app or download the installer from Minecraft.net. If using the Minecraft.net installer, keep the Store account signed in.
- If the Store itself appears stuck, try resetting its cache as described in the Windows repair section below.
If the installation succeeds but the Launcher will not open, use the Windows app repair options below rather than assuming the download is the cause.

If Play is missing or Minecraft says you do not own it
A missing Play button or license error can result from using different accounts in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. Before buying Minecraft again, check that each app is using the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or subscription.
- Sign out of the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app.
- Sign in to each with the same Microsoft account—the one used to purchase Minecraft or access it through a subscription.
- Check your Microsoft account order history or purchase confirmation to verify ownership. Minecraft Help also provides guidance for Launcher installation and account issues and Play Button Not Appearing.
If the accounts already match, confirm that the purchase or subscription is active on that account before trying a reinstall.

If Java Edition crashes when you press Play
Try a clean Java installation using the same game version as the profile that crashes. Minecraft Help recommends this as a way to distinguish a profile-specific problem from a broader launch problem; see Troubleshooting Minecraft Launcher Issues. The linked support page is in Brazilian Portuguese and notes that its English translation may contain errors, so the steps should be followed as general troubleshooting guidance.
- In the Launcher, open the Java Edition installations list and create a new installation.
- Select the same Minecraft version as the failing installation; leave mods and custom advanced settings out of the new profile.
- Launch the new profile. If it works, inspect the original profile’s mods and advanced settings, including resolution and JVM arguments, before changing or removing them.
A successful clean-profile launch points toward something specific to the original profile; it does not by itself identify which mod or setting caused the crash.

If the Windows Launcher crashes, freezes, or will not open
For Windows Launcher problems, Minecraft Help lists Windows app repair, Microsoft Store cache reset, Launcher reinstallation, and the Gaming Services Repair Tool as possible options. The support article was returned in Brazilian Portuguese and warns of possible translation errors, so use the current instructions on the linked support page: Troubleshooting Minecraft Launcher Issues.
- Repair the app: use Windows’ app repair option for the Launcher when it is installed but malfunctioning.
- Reset Store cache: try this if the Microsoft Store or Store-based installation appears stuck.
- Use Gaming Services Repair Tool: consider it for Windows Launcher or Gaming Services failures.
- Reinstall the Launcher: reserve this for cases where repair and relevant account checks have not resolved the problem.
Before uninstalling, back up your worlds. A reinstall is not a substitute for checking which account owns the game, and these repair options are not guaranteed to fix every failure.

If Bedrock, console, or mobile will not update
Update steps vary by device and edition. For Bedrock updates outside the Windows Launcher, use the manual update instructions for your specific platform rather than applying Windows Store steps to a console or phone. Minecraft Help’s Bedrock Edition Update FAQ points readers to platform-specific guidance.
If the issue is joining multiplayer after an update, check that you are using the latest release. A Preview or Snapshot may not match the release used by other players or servers.

Check whether your operating system is supported
Minecraft Help’s requirements page states: “As of March 2025, you must update to at least Windows 10 or MacOS 10.15 to access online play and continue receiving updates for Minecraft through the Launcher.” If your computer runs an older version, check the current requirements before spending time on Launcher repairs: Minecraft Java Edition system requirements.
