Minecraft Help says Launcher issues can involve missing dependencies or signing in with the wrong Microsoft account. Its general Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting guidance is a useful starting point when the symptom does not fit just one category.
Check your account and game access
Use the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft—or has the relevant subscription—in each app involved in installation and play. An account mismatch can look like a broken update: the Launcher may open but fail to sign in, or the Play button may not appear because the active account does not have access to the game.

- In the Minecraft Launcher, check which Microsoft account is signed in.
- Open Microsoft Store and check that it is signed in to the same account.
- Open the Xbox app and check its signed-in account as well.
- If any account differs, switch it to the account that owns Minecraft or has the relevant subscription, then retry sign-in or launch.
Check all three apps, not just the Launcher. The Store may be involved in installing the Launcher, and Minecraft support specifically advises using the account that owns the game in the Xbox app when working through some sign-in problems. If the Store is on one account and the Launcher is on another, a successful installation attempt in one place does not establish that the Launcher account has access to play.
If you recently changed accounts or have more than one Microsoft account, verify ownership or subscription access before reinstalling. A missing Play button is not, by itself, proof that the update failed. If the account is correct but the Play button remains unavailable, use the specific access guidance rather than deleting app data.
Minecraft support also suggests signing in to the Xbox app with the account that owns Minecraft before trying to sign in to the Launcher again; this can resolve some sign-in errors. This Windows path is for an installation or update that stalls; it is not the first choice for a Java game that crashes after Play.

1. Confirm the Microsoft Store account
If you are installing through Microsoft Store, make sure the Store is signed in to the intended account. Then retry the installation or update. Minecraft lists the Xbox app and Minecraft.net as alternative download routes if Store installation fails. This is a useful first check because changing the download route does not change which account must authenticate. If you use an alternative route, still confirm that Microsoft Store is signed in with the account you intend to use. Otherwise, the same account issue may follow you to the next installer.
2. Reset Microsoft Store
If the Store installation or update is stuck, reset Microsoft Store and try again. On Windows, the Store’s app settings provide its reset control; the exact labels and location can vary between Windows versions. This step targets a Store-related installation problem, not a Java profile crash that happens only after pressing Play.
After the reset, retry the installation or update before moving to a more disruptive action. If the Store operation now proceeds, there is no need to jump straight to removing Minecraft files. If it remains stalled, continue to the Launcher repair step.
3. Repair the Minecraft Launcher
Use Windows’ “Repair apps and programs” controls to repair the Minecraft Launcher. In Windows app settings, find Minecraft Launcher and choose the available repair option. Repair is the less destructive next step; it is not the same as manually deleting the game’s data folders.
Use the repair option for the Launcher app, then check whether the original install or update problem is resolved. Windows versions can label or arrange app controls differently, so use the available repair control rather than relying on a particular sequence of screen names. If repair is unavailable or does not fix the installation problem, the documented next step is reinstalling the Launcher.
4. Reinstall only if repair fails
If resetting Microsoft Store and repairing the Launcher do not solve the installation or update failure, uninstall and reinstall the Launcher. Minecraft documents these steps in Fix Minecraft Installation Errors on Windows. Do not treat uninstalling the Launcher as permission to delete the Java game-data folder: saved worlds and other data may be stored separately, and manual deletion can remove them.
Keep the scope of this step clear: the sequence concerns the Launcher installation. A manual deletion of game files is a separate action with a data-loss risk. If the original problem is a missing Play button or a crash only after starting Java Edition, first follow the account or profile checks above; reinstalling may not address the cause.

Use the specific fix for error 0X80131500
If the installation failure shows error code 0X80131500, Minecraft Help gives an error-specific path: run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter and check Internet Options to make sure TLS 1.2 is enabled, with TLS 1.3 enabled if it is available on your system. These are suggestions for this particular error, not universal changes to make for every Launcher problem. Follow the details in Minecraft’s error-code guidance.
Use this branch only when that code is the error you see. It is not a general instruction to change security settings whenever an update is slow, and it is not a fix for an account-access problem or a Java profile crash. If the error is different, return to the symptom-based steps instead of assuming the same troubleshooting applies.
Fix Java Edition crashes after you click Play
If the Launcher opens and the failure happens only when Java Edition starts, test whether the problem is tied to the existing installation profile. Minecraft recommends creating a new Java installation using the same game version as the affected installation.
- In the Launcher, open the Java Edition installations area and create a new installation.
- Select the same game version used by the installation that crashes.
- Save the new installation and launch the game with it.
- If the new installation starts successfully, inspect the original profile’s mods and advanced settings rather than assuming the Launcher update itself is broken.
Matching the version matters: the comparison is between the affected setup and a fresh installation of that same game version, not an arbitrary newer or older version. The test helps isolate whether the existing profile’s configuration is involved. If the new installation fails in the same way, this particular test has not shown that the old profile is the cause; avoid claiming it has.

Testing one change at a time is more informative than changing several mods and settings together. If startup works after one adjustment, you have a stronger clue about which part of the original profile was implicated. Keep the old profile available while you test; the supported diagnostic step is making a new installation, not deleting the existing files.
Protect worlds before uninstalling or deleting files
Do not casually delete the .minecraft folder to fix a Launcher update. Minecraft warns that manually deleting game files can remove worlds and other data. Before any manual uninstall or deletion, back up the worlds and other files you want to keep. Minecraft’s Java Edition uninstall guidance explicitly recommends visiting its Backup & Restore section first; it also says support cannot restore deleted files.

- If you are reinstalling the Launcher, distinguish the Launcher app from saved worlds and other game data.
- Do not proceed with a manual deletion until you have copied the data you need to keep and confirmed the backup is accessible.
Backing up is especially important before a manual uninstall or cleanup, because deleting game files can remove worlds, inventory, progress, and other data you meant to keep. The official guidance recommends saving those items before proceeding, and notes that support cannot restore files you delete. A reinstall and a manual deletion are not interchangeable: use the documented Launcher reinstall path for an installation failure, and do not add a broad folder deletion unless you have a separate reason and a usable backup.

Operating-system support can matter even when the Launcher worked before. If your Mac is below the stated minimum, check the current system requirements rather than trying Windows-only repair controls.
