How to Fix Microsoft Edge in Windows: Repair, Clear Data, or Reset?

Use Windows’ documented Microsoft Edge Repair option for crashes or startup problems. Learn the Windows 10 and 11 paths, what Repair preserves, and why Reset is different.

If Microsoft Edge is crashing, refusing to open, or behaving erratically, use Windows’ documented Repair option: close Edge, then go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair. You need administrator rights and an internet connection. Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings. A Windows app “Reset” is not necessarily the same as resetting Edge’s browser settings, so don’t treat the options as interchangeable.

Repair Microsoft Edge in Windows 11

  1. Close Microsoft Edge, including any sessions open under other signed-in Windows accounts.
  2. Make sure you have administrator rights and an internet connection.
  3. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Find Microsoft Edge, select the three-dot menu beside it, and choose Modify.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt, then select Repair and follow the on-screen instructions.

Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting instructions say: “Your browser data and settings shouldn’t be affected by repair.” See Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting steps.

Repair Edge in Windows 10

In Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Microsoft Edge, and choose Modify. Approve the prompt and select Repair. The repair procedure also requires administrator rights, an internet connection, and Edge to be closed for all signed-in users. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance; that does not mean the Edge repair function itself stopped working.

Is Windows Repair the same as resetting Edge?

No. Microsoft documents Repair as the Edge-specific recovery action in Windows. Separately, Windows provides generic guidance that some apps have Repair or Reset under Advanced options, but that does not establish that an Edge Reset control is available on every Windows installation or explain its Edge-specific effects. Do not assume that a Windows app reset is equivalent to resetting Edge’s browser settings or that it preserves data.

If you mean resetting Edge’s browser settings, the Microsoft support pages cited here do not verify a universal settings-reset path or its data consequences. Use the repair procedure above for a documented Edge recovery action rather than selecting a Windows Reset option without understanding what it will remove.

Choose the least disruptive fix for the symptom

Option When it fits Data considerations
Update Edge Edge opens, but may be out of date or an update is available. Microsoft says favorites, passwords, and settings are kept when updating through its update or reinstall guidance. See Edge update settings.
Windows Repair Edge crashes, will not open, or remains unstable. Microsoft says browser data and settings should not be affected.
Clear selected browsing data A page displays incorrectly, or cache or history may be causing trouble. You choose the categories and time range. Synced items may also be cleared on other synced devices.
Windows app Reset Only if Windows offers it and you understand its consequences. Generic Windows guidance says some apps have this option; Edge-specific consequences are not established.
Contact IT The device is managed and the Modify option is missing. An organization’s settings may control whether repair is available.

Try basic checks before repairing

  • Close other tabs, extensions, and apps, then restart the PC.
  • Check for an update at Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.

If Edge opens but a webpage looks wrong, clear only the relevant browsing data instead of deleting everything. Go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services, then use the browsing-data controls to choose a time range and categories. Microsoft’s history and browsing-data instructions explain the available choices.

Before clearing data, check which categories are selected. History, cookies, passwords, and form data are distinct categories; deleting all of them may affect saved sign-ins or other browser information. If you use sync, Microsoft says synced items can be cleared across synced devices. Review Edge sync settings if you need to understand what is synchronized.

If Edge still will not work

Modify is unavailable

Stop rather than trying to bypass the setting. Microsoft identifies organization management as a likely reason the Modify control may not appear. Ask your organization’s IT administrator whether repair is permitted.

A page still will not load

Open the page in another browser. If it fails there too, the cause may be the network or the website rather than Edge. Microsoft suggests restarting the modem or router and contacting the site owner when appropriate.

Edge update fails

Open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or enter edge://settings/help in the address bar. Microsoft also describes updating through Windows Update and reinstalling Edge from its download page if updating through Settings fails. Follow Microsoft’s Edge update guidance for the applicable method.

What to expect from Edge Repair

Repair is intended to fix the Edge installation without changing browser data or settings, according to Microsoft. It is not a promise that every problem will be fixed: a faulty website, network issue, organization policy, or another cause may need a different remedy. If repair completes but the original problem remains, use the symptom-specific checks above rather than assuming that a Windows Reset will produce the same result.
