Start by matching the symptom to the right system: headset position tracking, controller tracking, controller power or pairing, or the Guardian boundary. These are separate problems, so a battery check will not fix a boundary issue, and recreating a boundary will not repair a controller that has lost power. Work through the checks below in order, keep a clear play space, and contact Meta if the fault persists.
First, identify what is failing
- Headset position tracking: the view or room position jumps, or the headset reports that tracking is lost.
- Controller tracking: a controller drifts, disappears, or appears in the wrong place while the headset remains positioned correctly.
- Controller power or pairing: a controller does not respond or appears disconnected.
- Guardian boundary: the boundary appears in the wrong place, appears at unexpected times, or does not stay where you set it.
If possible, check whether a controller problem affects one controller or both, and whether it occurs in the system interface as well as in more than one app. This helps distinguish a single-controller symptom from a broader tracking or app-specific one.

If headset tracking is lost or the view jumps
- Check the tracking setting. Confirm that headset tracking is enabled in the current headset settings. Menu labels can change with software updates, so use the labels shown on your device rather than relying on an unverified path.
- Inspect the tracking camera area. Check that it is not obstructed. Avoid disassembling the headset or using an unverified cleaning method.
- Compare conditions. Recheck the symptom in a clear, evenly lit room. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that a particular room condition caused the fault.
- Restart and reassess. If the tracking prompt continues after a normal reboot and in a different environment, go to Meta support and select the Quest 3 route.
Meta’s available consumer guidance does not establish a specific lighting, reflective-surface, or camera-cleaning fix for this symptom, so do not assume any one environmental adjustment is a guaranteed repair.

If controllers drift, disappear, or appear misplaced
- Check the scope. Note whether one controller or both are affected, and whether the problem appears in the system interface and multiple apps.
- Check power separately. If a controller is also unresponsive, follow the power check in the next section. A powered controller can still have a tracking fault.
- Escalate persistent faults. If a real-world controller continues to drift or disappear after basic checks, use Meta’s device-specific support route.
Meta’s Quest 3 simulator guidance mentions turning a simulated controller’s top surface toward the headset when its simulated pose is inaccurate. That advice is for simulator use; it is not a guaranteed fix for a physical controller.

If a controller is unresponsive or disconnected
- Check its battery. If the controller uses a replaceable cell and its battery is low or depleted, replace it with a compatible battery. This addresses power only; it does not diagnose every tracking or pairing problem.
- If it has power but remains disconnected, follow Meta’s current controller-pairing instructions or contact support. The exact consumer pairing menu sequence is not established here, and software labels may change.
- Do not disassemble the controller as a troubleshooting step.
For a persistent problem, select Quest 3 on Meta’s support page to check its current notices and device-specific guidance.
If Guardian or the boundary behaves unexpectedly
Guardian marks the play space and provides visual cues as the headset or controllers approach its edge. Meta describes boundary behavior as part of user safety; keep a suitable, clear space around you while diagnosing a problem.

- Check the room first. Make sure the defined play area still matches the physical room and furniture arrangement.
- Adjust or recreate the boundary if needed. Do this only when the space is suitable and clear. Follow the current labels on the headset; the exact consumer menu path for clearing boundary history is not confirmed here.
- Keep safety cues enabled. Do not disable Guardian to conceal a misplaced or unexpected boundary. Meta notes that the system can override software requests to hide or show it in some conditions, so an app’s hide/show behavior is not a dependable fix.
For current boundary instructions, check the headset’s live settings or ask Meta support rather than following an outdated menu sequence.

When to contact Meta or consider a factory reset
Contact Meta if the same fault continues after the relevant basic checks and a normal reboot, especially if the issue looks persistent or hardware-related. Meta’s support-selection page currently says it is aware of issues affecting Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S; check the live page because notices can change, then select Quest 3 for device-specific help: Meta support.

A factory reset is a later escalation, not a first-line tracking fix. If less disruptive steps have failed, use Meta’s official Quest reset guide and follow its current device-specific instructions. Review any backup prompts before proceeding; a reset is more disruptive than checking settings, power, or boundary setup.
