How to Fix Mermaid Flowcharts That Fail When a Node Is Named “end”

A lowercase Mermaid flowchart node ID named end can break parsing. Capitalize it, or assign a safe ID and keep “end” as the visible label.

In a Mermaid flowchart, a node written with the lowercase identifier end can break parsing. The quick fix is to capitalize it as End or END. If the visible label must stay lowercase, use a different node ID and put end in the displayed text.

Why a node named end breaks a flowchart

Mermaid’s flowchart syntax documentation warns that typing end in all lowercase letters will break a flowchart. The word is significant to the flowchart grammar, so using it as a node identifier can be interpreted as syntax rather than an ordinary node name. Mermaid’s syntax reference also flags end in flowcharts and sequence diagrams; this guidance is specifically about flowcharts, and diagram types do not necessarily share identical parsing rules. A Mermaid issue opened on 2020-06-05 records a reproduction with state --> end, confirming that this has been reported historically, but not that every renderer or version behaves identically.

Choose a fix based on the label you need

Capitalize the node ID End or END You can also change the visible capitalization. Mermaid’s flowchart guide recommends capitalizing one or more letters.
Use a separate ID and label endNode["end"] The displayed label must remain lowercase. Mermaid lets a node’s identifier differ from its displayed text, and its syntax reference advises quoting the problematic word.

Fix the diagram step by step

  1. Confirm the failing block is a Mermaid flowchart, then find where lowercase end is used as a node ID or label.

  2. If changing the displayed case is fine, rename the node to End or END. Update every edge and later reference that uses the old ID.

  3. If the displayed label must stay lowercase, replace the ID with a distinct name and quote the label. For example:

Use endNode in every edge or later reference to that node; end is now its visible text, not its ID.

  4. If the diagram still fails, inspect nearby syntax and confirm the diagram type. The reserved-word diagnosis explains a specific failure mode; it does not establish that every Mermaid parse error comes from end.
