Cloudflare Pay Per Crawl is for charging AI crawlers for access to a website; Stripe Billing and Lemon Squeezy usage-based billing are for charging your own customers for metered product usage. A custom API billing system is an implementation approach, not a ready-made billing product. The right choice depends first on what you want to meter—not simply on which provider processes a payment.
How Cloudflare Pay Per Crawl works
Pay Per Crawl is part of Cloudflare’s AI Crawl Control. A site owner sets a price for crawler access at the zone level. When an AI crawler requests content, it can send payment intent in request headers and receive the content with an HTTP 200 response, or receive HTTP 402 with pricing. Cloudflare’s feature documentation describes that request flow.

Cloudflare’s July 1, 2025 announcement describes three publisher controls: Allow for free access, Charge for access at the configured domain-wide price, and Block to deny access. For authenticated requests that include payment intent and receive a successful response, Cloudflare records billing events, aggregates them, charges the crawler, and distributes publisher earnings. Cloudflare says it acts as Merchant of Record and provides the technical infrastructure.

Cloudflare’s crawler-operator setup documentation says Pay Per Crawl uses Stripe to process payments and that invoices are created and managed via Stripe. Crawler operators configure their own spending limits.

Availability is a separate question
Cloudflare called Pay Per Crawl a “private beta” in its July 1, 2025 announcement. The product documentation reviewed on October 4, 2026 explains how the feature works but does not establish a general-availability date. Check Cloudflare’s current rollout information before relying on access to it.
How the billing alternatives differ
| Option | What is metered | When billing or access happens | What the operator configures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Pay Per Crawl | AI crawler requests for a website zone | Request-level flow: payment intent can accompany a request that receives successful delivery; Cloudflare aggregates qualifying events and settles with the crawler. | Zone-level crawler policy and price; crawler operators set spending limits. Cloudflare feature docs and Stripe connection docs. |
| Stripe Billing | Actions or units in your own product, represented as meter events | Depends on the billing model and period you configure; Stripe documents pay-as-you-go, fixed fee plus overage, and credit-burndown patterns. | Meters, event reporting, prices, and the chosen subscription billing model. Stripe recurring pricing models. |
| Lemon Squeezy usage-based billing | Customer usage reported through its API | Reported usage is charged at the customer’s next renewal date. | Usage reporting through the API and the associated subscription setup. Lemon Squeezy usage-based billing. |
| Custom API billing | Not stated; it depends on what your implementation defines as billable usage. | Not stated; the reviewed provider documentation does not define a custom system’s charging schedule. | You must design how usage is measured and connected to customer billing. The reviewed Stripe documentation describes billing primitives, not a recommended custom architecture. |
Which option fits your billing problem?
Choose Pay Per Crawl for crawler access to a website
Consider it when the customer is an AI crawler operator and the billable event is that crawler’s request for protected site content. Its distinguishing feature is the connection between access policy and payment intent at the website zone. It is not presented in the cited Cloudflare materials as a general-purpose meter for actions inside a SaaS product.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Choose Stripe Billing for metered usage in your own product
Stripe’s meters aggregate events over a billing period; events represent actions in a customer’s system and are associated with meters and prices. Its documented pricing models let a business choose among different ways to charge for that usage. This is a broader customer-billing toolkit, not the crawler access and settlement flow Cloudflare describes.

Consider Lemon Squeezy when usage is reported for subscription renewal billing
Lemon Squeezy documents an API-based workflow in which a seller reports customer usage and the reported amount is billed at the next renewal. That makes it a metered-subscription option, not a per-request access gate for crawlers.

Build custom billing only around requirements you can specify
“Custom API billing” does not identify a particular service, feature set, or standard architecture in the available documentation. Before choosing this route, define the billable event, how events are recorded and corrected, when charges are calculated, and how the result reaches customer billing. The cited sources do not establish comparative build effort, operating cost, or tax treatment, so those should be evaluated against your own stack and requirements rather than assumed.

Questions to settle before choosing
- Who is being charged? A crawler requesting website content points toward the Pay Per Crawl use case; a customer using your application points toward a product-billing meter.
- Does access need to depend on payment intent? Pay Per Crawl documents a request-level access flow. The Stripe and Lemon Squeezy materials cited here describe usage billing, not the same crawler access decision.
- When should usage become a charge? Lemon Squeezy documents billing reported usage at renewal; Stripe timing depends on the configured model and period. Confirm that the schedule fits your product.
- What operational requirements matter? Verify current availability, geography, tax handling, payment methods, data volume, and the ability to correct events directly with the provider. The cited materials do not offer a like-for-like evaluation of those requirements or a comparable engineering-effort score.
