Start by identifying which problem you actually have. Stuttering or low frame rates are performance symptoms; a crash is the game closing or Windows failing; login errors, rubber-banding, and disconnects are network or service symptoms. They can have different causes. Before changing settings, check Bungie’s live service notices, then compare your PC with the official requirements and follow the troubleshooting branch that matches what you see.
Check Marathon’s service status before changing your PC
A scheduled maintenance window, emergency outage, or update problem can look exactly like a local connection failure. Open Bungie’s Marathon Server and Update Status page and follow its link to BNGServerStatus for live notices. If Bungie reports maintenance or an incident, wait for the service to return before changing router, firewall, or graphics settings.

The status page reviewed for the current support information listed a scheduled October 8, 2026 maintenance for Update 1.1.9.3. That entry is historical, not evidence that maintenance is occurring now. Always use the live page on the day you troubleshoot.
First, classify the symptom
Use the observable behavior rather than assuming every problem is “lag.” This prevents a GPU change from being used to treat a server outage, or a router reset from being used to treat a CPU bottleneck.

| What you see | Most relevant branch | First evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Brief freezes, uneven frame pacing, or FPS dropping while you remain in the match | Performance (CPU, GPU, memory, drivers, or settings) | FPS counter, resolution, graphics settings, map, and whether lowering a setting changes FPS |
| The game closes to desktop, hangs, or causes a Windows-level failure | Crash or system stability | When it crashes, recent driver or game changes, Windows version, and any displayed code |
| Cannot sign in, cannot join a crew, or receive a disconnect code | Service, platform, or network | Exact code, time, service-status notice, and whether the same code repeats |

Record the exact wording and capitalization of any error. Bungie separates platform codes from Marathon codes, and each can lead to a different support path.
Compare your PC with Bungie’s official requirements
Bungie’s Marathon Storage and System Requirements page lists the following hardware and software. The figures apply to the Windows PC version and are not a promise of a particular frame rate.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |

| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Internet | Broadband Internet connection | Broadband Internet connection |
| Bungie’s separately labeled “RAM” line | 6 GB | 8 GB |
Bungie presents both a Memory row and a separate line labeled “RAM”; they are reproduced separately here rather than silently combining them. Check your installed RAM, processor model, GPU model and VRAM, Windows edition, and DirectX version against the table. A component below minimum can explain instability or poor performance, but meeting the minimum does not guarantee a fixed frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Marathon support laptops?
Bungie says a laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements may be able to run Marathon, but laptop configurations are not officially supported. Mobile power limits, cooling, switchable graphics, and manufacturer-specific drivers can make two laptops with similar names behave differently. If you troubleshoot a laptop, keep it on AC power, select its high-performance GPU for Marathon, and treat any result as configuration-specific rather than an officially supported guarantee.
Build a reproducible performance baseline
Do not change five settings at once. A baseline lets you tell whether a change affected the game or merely changed image quality.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- Close browsers, recording tools, overlays, and other applications that are not needed for the test.
- Enable Marathon’s in-game FPS counter, or enable the Steam FPS overlay if you use the Steam version.
- Set 1,920 × 1,080 resolution, Medium graphics, VSync off, and disable any frame-rate cap. Bungie uses this as a starting point for a 120-plus-FPS investigation, not as a guarantee that every PC will reach 120 FPS.
- Record the average feel and the worst stutters in the same short route or activity. Note the map, because dense environments such as Outpost and Cryo Archive can stress the system differently from other areas.
- Change one setting, repeat the same test, and write down the FPS response. Keep a screenshot of your original settings before experimenting.
Find out whether the CPU or GPU is limiting frame rate
Bungie describes Marathon as multithreaded and as its first shipped game with DirectX 12 support. Each frame involves simulation CPU work, render CPU work, and GPU work. As Bungie puts it, “The game will only run as fast as the slowest of these tasks.” A graphics-card upgrade is therefore not automatically the answer: a processor thread, simulation load, or map-specific CPU work can be the limiter.
Test the GPU ceiling
- Start from the Medium baseline.
- Disable anti-aliasing.
- Temporarily set render resolution to 25 percent.
- Repeat the same route while watching the FPS counter.
This setting intentionally makes the image look very poor and is only a diagnostic. If FPS rises substantially, the GPU or rendering workload is restricting performance. Restore a usable render resolution afterward and adjust resolution, upscaling, shadows, effects, or other GPU-heavy options one at a time.
Test CPU-heavy settings
Return render resolution to a normal value, then lower Environment Detail Distance, Character Detail Distance, and Foliage Detail Distance. Bungie also notes that reducing field of view can reduce CPU work. Test each change in the same location. If these settings do not improve frame rate, Bungie advises leaving them at Medium rather than sacrificing detail without a performance benefit.
A large improvement from distance or field-of-view changes points toward CPU or simulation work; a large improvement from the 25-percent render-resolution test points toward GPU work. Some workloads remain limited by single-thread performance even on a processor with many cores, so total CPU utilization may not reach 100 percent while one thread is the bottleneck.
Safe software and configuration checks
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Bungie’s requirements guidance recommends a current operating system and current graphics drivers. Install updates from Windows Update and from your GPU manufacturer, then restart. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, note that timing when seeking support rather than repeatedly installing unrelated versions.

Clear Steam’s download cache for Steam-side problems
For a Steam download, update, or installation that behaves incorrectly, Bungie suggests clearing Steam’s download cache. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, confirm, and sign in again when Steam restarts. This can require your credentials again; it does not replace the need to check the game’s files or Steam support when the account or installation itself is the issue.
Regenerate CVARS.xml when settings may be corrupted
For Marathon configuration problems, Bungie recommends deleting the file below and relaunching:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingBungieMarathonprefsCVARS.xml
- Exit Marathon completely.
- Open File Explorer and paste the path into the address bar, replacing
USERNAMEwith your Windows account name. - Copy
CVARS.xmlto a safe folder if you want a backup, then delete the original. - Launch Marathon. The game regenerates the file.
- Re-enter your preferred graphics, control, and display settings.
Deleting this file resets custom in-game settings to their defaults. It is reversible only in the practical sense that you can configure the options again or restore your backup; do not use it as a first step if you cannot recreate your settings.
How to stop Marathon from crashing
A crash is different from a low-FPS session. If Marathon closes, freezes, or triggers a Windows failure, first note whether it happens at launch, while loading a map, after changing graphics options, or after a fixed amount of play.
- Confirm that Windows, DirectX 12 support, and the graphics driver meet the requirements above.
- Remove aggressive overclocks or undervolts temporarily and test at the hardware’s standard settings.
- Close overlays and capture utilities one at a time so you can identify a conflict instead of disabling everything permanently.
- If the crash followed a settings change, regenerate
CVARS.xmlusing the procedure above and accept the settings reset. - If the problem is tied to Steam installation or updating, clear the download cache and use Steam’s support channel for account or installation-specific issues.
Bungie’s performance guide is about frame-rate optimization, not a universal crash fix. If the crash remains after these checks, post in the Marathon Help Forums with your complete specifications and a reproducible description. Include your Windows version, driver version, map or activity, what changed before the crash, and any displayed code.

Why can’t I connect to Marathon?
Follow this order for login and disconnect problems
- Check the live Bungie status page and BNGServerStatus.
- Write down the exact Marathon or platform error code and open the matching entry in Bungie’s Error Codes: Disconnected From Marathon guide. Do not substitute a different code because the messages look similar.
- Restart Marathon. If the code repeats, restart or clear the relevant platform cache where Bungie’s code-specific instructions call for it.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet if possible and retest.
- If several different codes appear, power-cycle the modem and router, then ask your internet provider about instability, congestion, or packet loss.
A repeated matching code can indicate a shared underlying issue, while several unrelated codes more often point to an unstable network path. These are troubleshooting branches, not proof of a single cause.
Prefer a wired connection when practical
Bungie’s network setup guide says, “For the best Marathon experience, Bungie recommends players use a wired internet connection instead of Wi-Fi.” Connect the PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable as a diagnostic and, if it helps, as a long-term option. This will not repair a Bungie outage, unsupported hardware, every form of packet loss, or a game crash by itself.
If Ethernet is not practical, Bungie’s Wi-Fi suggestions are:
- Move the PC closer to the access point.
- Reduce walls and other obstructions between the PC and access point.
- Limit competing devices and heavy traffic while playing.
- Choose a less congested wireless channel.
- Disable channel bonding if that is appropriate for your router and improves stability.
Bungie does not recommend mobile internet for Marathon; variable radio conditions can produce frequent codes or crew problems.
Separate lag, latency, and packet loss
Lag is the noticeable delay you feel in play; rubber-banding is one visible symptom. High latency and packet loss are different network conditions, and either can create poor play. If the FPS counter remains stable while actions arrive late or your character snaps backward, investigate the connection rather than lowering graphics settings. Pause cloud backups, video streams, downloads, and other traffic during a test, because competing activity can affect the route even when your broadband plan is fast.

Understand Bungie’s bandwidth estimates
Bungie says Marathon may request up to 1 Mbps upload and 1 Mbps download, and that live gameplay can use up to 1 GB per hour. These are Bungie’s estimates, not a promise that every session continuously consumes those amounts; play behavior and game updates change usage. A connection can meet the bandwidth figure and still suffer from Wi-Fi interference, high latency, or packet loss.
What happens if you disconnect during a run?
Bungie says the shell remains in the world after a disconnect and recommends reconnecting promptly. Gear return is limited to a subset of server-side error conditions. Losses caused by an internet connection or a client-side problem are not covered, so do not assume that reconnecting will restore every item.
Use the exact error code as a diagnostic clue
An error code narrows the next action; it is not a blanket diagnosis. Open Bungie’s dedicated code article and determine whether the code is a platform code or a Marathon code. Follow the instructions for that code before applying generic network changes. For support, provide the code exactly as shown, whether it repeats, how many times it occurred, the UTC or local time, and whether other players or services were affected.

When to escalate to Bungie or Steam
Use the Marathon Help Forums for unresolved PC problems. For Steam account, client, payment, or installation issues, use Steam support as appropriate. A useful report includes:
- CPU, GPU, installed memory, and whether the machine is a laptop.
- Windows edition and version, DirectX version, and graphics-driver version.
- Marathon version, platform, map or activity, and the step that triggers the issue.
- Original and changed settings, including whether deleting
CVARS.xmlchanged the behavior. - Exact error code, connection type, service-status result, and whether the code repeats or varies.
- What you already tried and the result of each test.
This information helps separate a reproducible client problem from service maintenance, platform trouble, or an unstable local connection without implying that Bungie has promised an individual fix or response time.
Quick Recap
A concise decision path
| Evidence | Next move |
|---|---|
| Status page shows maintenance or an incident | Wait for service recovery and retest before local changes. |
| FPS improves when render resolution is 25 percent | Investigate GPU load and graphics settings; restore a normal resolution for play. |
| FPS improves when detail distances or field of view are reduced | Investigate CPU or simulation limits, especially in dense maps. |
| Same disconnect code repeats | Follow that code’s page, restart the game, clear the applicable platform cache, and test Ethernet. |
| Several different disconnect codes appear | Investigate network stability, power-cycle network hardware, and contact the ISP about packet loss or congestion. |
| Stable FPS but delayed actions or rubber-banding | Treat it as latency or packet loss; test wired networking and remove competing traffic. |
| Crash persists after current drivers, a clean baseline, and configuration regeneration | Report the complete system and reproduction details to the Marathon Help Forums. |
