The right fix for a Majora’s Mask problem depends on which version you’re playing: the original Nintendo 64 game, Majora’s Mask 3D, the Nintendo Switch Online N64 app, or a third-party emulator. Start with the matching section below. The original and 3DS manuals describe different control and save rules, and Nintendo does not guarantee its Switch N64 controller works with games outside the N64 Switch Online library.
Fix controls on the original Nintendo 64
If Link moves in the wrong direction or the stick seems off-center, reset the controller’s neutral position before changing anything else. Nintendo’s official N64 game manual says the Control Stick must be centered when the console powers on. If it is held at an angle, that position can be treated as neutral and cause incorrect movement.

- Release the stick and let it return to the center.
- During play, hold L and R, then press Start to reset the stick’s neutral position.
- If you changed the controller connection during play, reset the console or power it off and on again; the manual says a reset or power cycle may be needed.
- Make sure the controller is connected to socket one, as specified by the manual, and test movement again.
Do not pour liquid into the stick or insert objects to clean it. Nintendo describes the stick as a precision instrument and warns against liquids and foreign objects.

Fix a Switch N64 controller that is not responding correctly
Nintendo recommends checking the console, controller, calibration, wireless conditions, and compatibility. Its guidance applies to the Switch N64 controller, model HAC-043. Nintendo warns that “Compatibility with games other than Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online is not guaranteed,” so working in system menus does not prove that the controller is supported by a particular game or other Switch software. See Nintendo’s controller troubleshooting guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Update the Switch system software, then make sure the controller is charged or powered on and paired with the console.
- Open the Switch controller calibration settings and check whether the sticks calibrate and respond normally.
- Move closer to the console and reduce nearby wireless interference. Test the controller in another compatible N64 Switch Online game to see whether the problem is limited to one title.
- If buttons lag or fail to register, check Nintendo’s support guidance for N64 controller input symptoms; stick calibration alone may not address a button issue.
- If the issue persists after these checks, follow Nintendo’s service instructions.
Fix Circle Pad Pro controls in Majora’s Mask 3D
On Nintendo 3DS, the Circle Pad Pro must be enabled in the game; connecting the accessory alone is not enough. Open the game’s Options menu, find the Circle Pad Pro setting on the first page, and enable it. The Majora’s Mask 3D manual also describes separate system Circle Pad calibration and in-game Circle Pad Pro calibration. Use the calibration flow for the control you are using.
If the accessory stops responding after you leave it untouched, wake it with ZL or ZR. Nintendo says the Circle Pad Pro enters standby after five minutes of inactivity.

Diagnose performance problems in Project64
There is no single documented Project64 setting or hardware change that fixes every slowdown, graphics glitch, or input problem in Majora’s Mask. Project64’s support guide recommends checking the emulator build, Windows and drivers, game dump, and plugins before blaming the game itself. It also offers separate configurations aimed at accuracy and at performance or general gaming.

- Record the Project64 version and build, the game’s region and version, your Windows version, and the graphics, audio, RSP, and input plugins in use.
- Install available Windows and driver updates, then try a current stable or nightly Project64 build recommended by the project.
- Check whether the game dump is valid. If you are using a ROM hack, test whether the same symptom occurs in an unmodified game.
- Try the plugin setups recommended in Project64’s guide. Its performance configuration lists GLideN64 in HLE for graphics, Parallel-RSP in HLE for RSP, Azimer’s audio v0.70 WIP 10 in HLE for audio, and Project64 input or N-Rage input depending on controller needs. These are Project64 recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for every symptom.
- Describe the problem precisely: what happens, what action triggers it, how often it occurs, and whether it can be reproduced. Include the build and plugin details when seeking support.
If you are using an emulator other than Project64, these plugin recommendations do not necessarily apply; use that emulator’s own documentation and settings.

Fix save problems without mixing up the editions
The N64 and 3DS versions do not use the same save rules. Before assuming progress is lost, identify the edition and the kind of progress you expected to retain.
Original Nintendo 64: Song of Time saves
The original manual says time moves continuously except during conversations and while paused. Playing through the three in-game days can lead to the game ending; using the Song of Time returns Link to 6:00 a.m. on the first day. The manual says that if the game ends, play resumes from the last time saved with the Song of Time. That cycle reset is not the same as preserving every short-term item or state. Consult the manual’s full saving section for the details of what persists.

Nintendo 3DS: save at an owl or quill statue
Stand in front of an owl or quill statue and press A to save. Returning to the dawn of the first day does not save automatically, according to the 3DS manual. Do not turn off or reset the system, or remove the game or SD card, while saving; Nintendo warns that doing so can cause permanent data loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProject64: check the build and save-file location
A Project64 issue report opened on April 26, 2022 described Majora’s Mask (USA) saves failing to load in development build Dev-4.0.0-5787-2f1074a; the reporter said the immediately preceding Dev-4.0.0-5786-1975a99 worked. This is a report about specific builds, not evidence that saves generally fail in Project64 or in current versions. If a save is missing, note your exact build, try a current supported version, and check whether the emulator is writing save files where expected. Back up existing saves before moving or changing files. See the Project64 issue report and its support guide.

Check the documented Majora’s Mask 3D update
Nintendo released Majora’s Mask 3D Ver. 1.1 on February 27, 2015. Its update notes list fixes for an in-game “ERROR!****” message and the inability to swing the sword after playing at Honey and Darling’s Shop, plus unspecified gameplay adjustments. If you encounter one of those listed issues, check whether the game reports Ver. 1.1 and install the update if it is available for your system. The notes do not establish that the update fixes unrelated control, performance, or save problems.
