The right hostname depends on whether the client runs on the host, in another container, or on another machine.
Start with runtime and health checks
LocalStack needs a working container runtime. If you launch it with lstk and see runtime not healthy, start the Docker daemon or the VM/runtime selected for your host. The lstk troubleshooting guide lists Docker Desktop, Rancher Desktop, Colima, OrbStack, Lima, and Podman as supported options; the command to start one depends on the runtime and host.

From the host, query
curl http://localhost:4566/_localstack/health. A health response confirms that the gateway is reachable from that host. It includes edition, version, and service states; a service may showavailableuntil it is first used. See the installation guide.
If the container exits or stays unhealthy, inspect its complete startup output with docker logs <container-id>. Look for the first relevant error, not only the final exit code or traceback. LocalStack’s FAQ also recommends checking DNS and outbound HTTPS access for startup problems. Its documented diagnostics include curl -v https://api.localstack.cloud/v1/health and a DNS lookup of api.localstack.cloud. These checks can help identify connectivity issues but do not establish that every startup failure has the same cause.
Check port 4566 and listener configuration
Port 4566 is LocalStack’s main edge/API gateway. Docker deployments must publish the gateway port for clients outside the container to reach it. The documented Docker-mode default for GATEWAY_LISTEN is 0.0.0.0:4566,0.0.0.0:443; host-mode defaults bind to loopback instead. Consult the configuration reference and endpoint URL guide for the launch mode you use.

If port 443 is already in use
A warning about port 443 does not always mean LocalStack failed. The lstk FAQ says it can drop the default 443 publication and continue serving HTTPS through edge port 4566. If you do not need 443, configure GATEWAY_LISTEN with only 0.0.0.0:4566. By contrast, a port explicitly required by a custom listener is a hard requirement: a conflict on that port can prevent startup. Check the actual container state and published ports rather than treating every 443 warning as fatal.
Choose an endpoint based on where the client runs
localhost always refers to the machine or container where the client itself runs. It does not automatically mean the host running LocalStack. Use the endpoint and port that are reachable from the client’s network location:

LocalStack’s networking overview states: “LocalStack only binds to IPv4 addresses (e.g. 127.0.0.1).” If the service appears healthy but a client still cannot connect, check whether that client is resolving or attempting an IPv6 address.

Point the AWS SDK or CLI at LocalStack
In the usual explicit-endpoint setup, AWS SDKs do not automatically send requests to LocalStack. Configure the SDK’s endpoint setting for your client location. The SDK overview gives examples for .NET, C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, PHP, Python/Boto3, and Ruby, including endpoints such as http://localhost:4566 and http://localhost.localstack.cloud:4566. Exact configuration syntax varies by SDK and version.
For AWS CLI on the host
Pass LocalStack’s endpoint explicitly with --endpoint-url. The AWS CLI guide uses local-development examples such as AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=test, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=test, and AWS_DEFAULT_REGION=us-east-1, then calls the CLI with --endpoint-url=http://localhost.localstack.cloud:4566. These are example local values, not production cloud credentials.

For AWS CLI in a container
The host’s localhost:4566 is not automatically reachable as the same address inside a CLI container. Attach the CLI and LocalStack containers to a shared Docker network and target LocalStack by its network name, following the CLI guide’s container example.

Fix an x509 hostname mismatch without disabling TLS checks
An error saying that a certificate is valid for a LocalStack hostname but not an amazonaws.com hostname can mean the client requested a real AWS hostname while traffic was routed to LocalStack. Set the client’s endpoint explicitly—for example, http://localhost:4566 or http://localhost.localstack.cloud:4566 when that address is reachable from the client. LocalStack’s FAQ prefers HTTP for this local-development scenario. Do not broadly disable certificate verification to work around an endpoint mismatch. Transparent endpoint injection has separate DNS and TLS requirements; use its own documented setup rather than applying the explicit-endpoint instructions blindly.
Collect useful details if the problem persists
When the cause is still unclear, collect the details that distinguish a runtime failure from a network or client-configuration error:

The complete port mapping and listener configuration.

Where the client runs: on the host, in a sibling container, in a LocalStack-created container, or on another machine.

The exact endpoint hostname, port, and protocol configured in the client.

The health response and complete startup logs.
If LocalStack is serving HTTP and debug mode is enabled, its FAQ documents a diagnose endpoint that can generate a compressed diagnostic bundle. The output can be extensive and potentially sensitive, so review and protect it before sharing.
