For a dark face, first move an existing light in front of you, near the webcam’s direction, and reduce bright light behind you. For flicker or rolling bands, check whether your camera has a power-frequency or anti-flicker setting. Work through the checks below before buying equipment: the cause may be light placement, camera exposure, or a problem unrelated to lighting.
Start with the light’s position
Brighten your face from the camera side
Move a desk lamp or other existing light so it illuminates your face from near the webcam’s direction. Avoid putting the brightest light behind you: a bright window or lamp in the background can leave your face looking dark by comparison. Logitech gives similar placement advice for the C922 webcam, recommending light from behind the webcam rather than behind the presenter and minimal backlighting (Logitech C922 lighting guidance).
Soften hard shadows if they remain
If the light creates harsh facial shadows, soften its beam or add a softer secondary light. Logitech describes a main “key light” and a softer “fill light” in its C922 guidance. Treat this as an optional arrangement, not a requirement to buy a two-light kit. If you are considering a purchase, a controllable streaming key light is the most relevant category; a fill light is a possible addition when shadows persist. Fit, mounting, brightness control, and whether the light can be diffused matter for your actual desk and camera setup. No individual light has been independently tested here.
Logitech says the C922’s environment lighting should be “above 300 lux” for best results with that webcam. That is C922-specific guidance, not a universal minimum for every webcam or stream.

Fix a backlit or silhouetted face
A bright background can cause the camera image to render your face too dark. Reduce the background light’s dominance if practical, or move the main light to the camera side of your face. Recheck the image after each change so you can tell whether placement solved the problem before adjusting camera controls.
Check exposure when the image is dim or keeps changing
Look in your camera’s software for exposure mode and low-light compensation. Menu names and available controls depend on the camera. Automatic exposure can be useful when the light changes—for example, Elgato says Facecam automatic exposure may suit changing light. Its Camera Hub guidance also suggests considering more light if Facecam ISO rises above 1000. That threshold applies to Facecam guidance, not to cameras generally (Elgato Facecam Camera Hub settings).

Stop flicker, ripples, or horizontal bands
Artificial lighting and camera exposure or shutter timing can interact to produce flicker, rolling bands, or ripple-like artifacts. TP-Link describes this issue for VIGI cameras and recommends matching the camera’s power-line frequency setting to the local electrical supply: 50 Hz or 60 Hz. Then adjust exposure; if flicker remains, enable anti-flicker if your model provides it. The controls available depend on VIGI model and firmware (TP-Link VIGI flicker guidance, updated September 20, 2026).
Other cameras may offer equivalent controls under different names or in separate software. Logitech documents an Anti-flicker setting in Tune for BRIO 500/501, while Elgato lists anti-flicker in Camera Hub for Facecam. Check the documentation or software for your exact camera rather than assuming the same menu path applies (Logitech BRIO 500/501 anti-flicker guidance; Elgato Facecam Camera Hub settings).

If the picture still looks pixelated
Once lighting is corrected, do not keep changing lights to fix pixelation. Streamlabs lists lighting and camera settings as possible contributors, but also identifies bandwidth, encoder settings, and computer processing as other causes. Check those independently if the image remains blocky or blurry (Streamlabs troubleshooting guide).
