You can start a podcast with a clear show idea, a basic recording setup, and a way to publish episodes through an RSS feed. You do not need a particular microphone or a professional studio to begin. Decide what your show is, record and prepare an episode, choose either a podcast host or a self-managed feed, then submit it to the listening platforms you want to reach.
Plan a show you can keep making
Before buying equipment, decide what the podcast is for and what a typical episode will contain. A simple plan helps you choose a recording workflow and avoid building a setup around a format you may not use.

- Audience: Who is the show meant to help, entertain, or inform?
- Subject and scope: What will you cover, and what belongs outside the show?
- Repeatable format: For example, a solo explanation, an interview, or a co-hosted discussion. Choose a format you can produce consistently.
- Length and cadence: Set a realistic episode length and publishing schedule. Consistency matters more than choosing an ambitious schedule you cannot maintain.
- Audio or video: Decide whether the show is audio-first or whether you also intend to make video episodes. This affects recording and YouTube publishing choices.
These are practical planning choices, not platform-mandated requirements. You can refine the format after recording a pilot.
What equipment do you need?
A workable starting setup can be as simple as a phone or computer, a recording app, and a microphone. A USB podcast microphone is an optional category, not a requirement. The platform requirements for publishing describe the delivered audio file; they do not prescribe a recording device or microphone model.

Record and prepare your first episode
- Make a short test recording. Check that the correct microphone is selected, speech is audible, and there is no obvious distortion or background noise.
- Record the episode. Keep notes or an outline nearby if useful. If you are interviewing someone, confirm that their recording is also usable before ending the session.
- Edit for clarity. Remove obvious mistakes and long accidental pauses. Listen through the result rather than relying only on the editing timeline.
- Export a podcast-ready audio file. Apple Podcasts accepts MP3 or AAC audio in an RSS feed. For 44.1 or 48 kHz audio, Apple lists 64–128 kbps for mono and 128–256 kbps for stereo. These are Apple’s published technical recommendations, not a universal guarantee of perceived quality; lower file sizes can involve a quality trade-off.
Apple says AAC can provide better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate and recommends MP4 packaging for AAC to support streaming efficiency and seeking. Use an export setting compatible with your chosen publishing route, and listen to the exported file before uploading it.

Choose how to publish: a podcast host or your own RSS feed
Podcast listening platforms commonly use an RSS feed to identify a show and its episodes. A hosting provider can create and manage that feed and may help with submission or other publishing tasks. You can also generate and host your own feed. Apple documents both approaches; neither is the universal best choice.

Submit an RSS podcast to Apple Podcasts
For RSS-based submission, Apple requires an Apple Podcasts Connect account, a publicly addressable feed that meets its technical requirements, required feed tags, at least one episode, and artwork. The feed also needs correctly formed episode enclosure details. Apple’s guidance describes server support for HTTP HEAD requests and byte-range requests.
- Prepare the show in your host or feed system. Add the show information, artwork, at least one episode, and the required feed tags. Confirm that the episode media and feed are publicly reachable.
- Check the feed in the Podcasts app. Apple suggests adding the show by URL in the app to see how its artwork and media appear.
- Validate the feed. Use Apple’s validation workflow to check technical requirements, tags, cover art, and episode files.
- Submit through Apple Podcasts Connect. Sign in with an Apple Podcasts Connect account and submit the RSS show for review.
Technical validation is not the same as content approval. A feed can pass technical checks without that result guaranteeing that Apple will approve its content for listing.

Publish on YouTube, with or without video
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist of video episodes. You can upload video episodes directly, or—where RSS ingestion is available—submit an RSS feed. With RSS ingestion, YouTube can create static-art videos from audio episodes and automatically upload newly added episodes. The RSS option is available only in selected countries or regions, and distribution through that route is limited to YouTube and YouTube Music; it does not submit the show to other podcast platforms.

YouTube’s guidance says podcast playlists should contain full-length episodes in the order intended for listening. RSS ingestion is a YouTube distribution route, not a substitute for submitting your RSS feed to Apple Podcasts or other directories.

Troubleshoot common first-publishing problems
- The recording is missing or nearly silent: Check the selected input device and connection, then record and play back a short test before trying the full episode again.
- The audio sounds distorted or noisy: Recheck the recording level and environment, then make another test. Listen to the exported file, not just the live input.
- The feed does not validate: Check the feed structure, required tags, artwork, episode enclosure details, and whether the feed and media are publicly accessible. Confirm that the server supports the requests described in Apple’s requirements.
- The show looks wrong in Apple Podcasts: Preview it by adding its feed URL in the Podcasts app, then correct artwork or media presentation issues and validate again.
- Validation passes but the show is not approved: Validation only checks technical compliance; it does not guarantee the content approval decision.
- You cannot submit RSS to YouTube: RSS ingestion is limited to selected regions. If it is unavailable to you, publish video episodes using YouTube’s upload workflow instead.
