Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFixing lag in a Core Keeper multiplayer world starts with identifying the failure: low client frame rate, network delay, a host or server simulation stall, or a mod/version mismatch. These problems feel similar but require different fixes. First reproduce the same action with the same players, remove background load, and record who is affected. Then test one variable at a time.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Core Keeper servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A dedicated server can remove game rendering from the host PC and gives you more control over the connection path, but it is not a universal cure. The reliable method is a clean baseline, controlled mod and player-count tests, and before-and-after notes.

Identify what “lag” actually is
Use the symptom pattern to choose your first test. The following are diagnostic heuristics, not guaranteed game rules.
| What you see | Most useful first hypothesis | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Your screen stutters while other players continue normally | Client frame-rate, local CPU/GPU load, thermal throttling, or one player’s network route | Check that player’s frame rate and close local background applications; have the player join a different host if practical. |
| Everyone rubber-bands, actions arrive late, or all players freeze together | Host/server simulation load or a shared network path | Repeat the same activity with fewer players and a clean host machine. |
| The problem appears in one biome, near a large automation build, or during a particular event | A location-specific simulation workload | Leave the area and repeat with the same player count; record the exact trigger. |
| The issue begins after installing or updating a mod | Mod conflict, missing file, or version mismatch | Run one short session with every mod disabled, then add mods back in a controlled order. |
| Players disconnect or cannot join after changing server settings | Connection mode, address, or port reachability | Return to the previous connection mode and change only one network setting at a time. |
Do not call every delay “internet lag.” A low frame rate can make controls feel late even when packets are arriving normally, while a server simulation stall can affect every player regardless of their individual hardware.

Establish a clean baseline
- Record the session. Note the date and approximate time, world location, number of players, who experienced the problem, and whether it was rubber-banding, delayed interaction, a disconnect, or low frame rate.
- Close competing workloads. On the host PC, pause downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams, backups, game launchers, and CPU-heavy applications. Ask affected clients to do the same on their own machines.
- Restart in a known state. Exit the game cleanly, restart the dedicated server if you use one, and reconnect all players. Do not change graphics, mods, network mode, and player count simultaneously.
- Reproduce one action. Use the same route, base area, or activity for each trial. A consistent trigger is more useful than an hour of unstructured play.
- Run a smaller-player test. Repeat the action with one fewer player, then with only the host. If the symptom disappears, player count or shared simulation load is a meaningful variable.
- Keep a change log. Write down every setting, mod, server build, and player count used in each trial. Restore the last known-good state when a change makes things worse.
Separate client frame-rate problems from network delay
Signs of a client-side frame-rate problem
Only one player sees stutter, camera movement is uneven, menus or other games also feel slow, or the game becomes smooth when that player lowers rendering quality. Monitor frame rate with your platform’s overlay or another local tool while reproducing the issue. Check CPU and GPU utilization, memory pressure, temperatures, and whether another application starts using the disk.
Lowering graphics quality, closing overlays, updating the graphics driver, and stopping unnecessary background software can improve rendering smoothness. These changes cannot repair a server that is simulating late, so ask another player whether their controls are delayed at the same moment.

Rubber-banding, delayed item pickup, doors opening after a pause, or several players freezing together point toward the connection path or server tick workload. A player may have a high local frame rate and still wait for the server to acknowledge an action. Compare the same client on another host or in another world if possible; that comparison is more informative than changing graphics settings.
Check the host computer against Core Keeper’s requirements
Core Keeper’s Steam support page lists minimum and recommended Windows and Linux hardware requirements. Use the recommended tier as the sensible starting point for a busy multiplayer host, because a machine that only meets minimum requirements has less headroom for world simulation, saving, and the host’s own rendered game. See the current requirements at Steam’s Core Keeper support page.
The published requirements do not provide a universal CPU percentage, memory amount, bandwidth target, or ping value that guarantees smooth multiplayer. Instead, watch the host while reproducing the problem:

- CPU: look for sustained saturation or one busy core during the exact activity that causes freezing.
- Memory: check for paging or unusually high use after the world has been open for a while.
- Storage: observe disk activity during autosaves and when the issue occurs; nearly full or heavily contended storage can lengthen saves.
- Thermals: a laptop or small PC that downclocks under heat may lag only after an extended session.
- Background traffic: uploads, backups, and downloads can compete with the host’s outbound connection.
Run the same world on a different host, if available. If the problem follows one machine, concentrate on its CPU, memory, storage, thermals, and upload stability before buying a new network service.
Test the network path without guessing at numbers
Host-and-play test
Have another player host the same world or a fresh copy for a short, controlled trial. If everyone improves when a different person hosts, the original host’s hardware, upload path, or local traffic is implicated. If the problem follows a particular player regardless of host, inspect that player’s Wi-Fi, route, and local load.
Relay versus direct connections on a dedicated server
The dedicated-server reference documents two connection paths. When -port is omitted, the server uses Steam relay networking. Setting -port enables direct connections, and the selected port must be reachable from the players’ networks. The reference also documents the -ip option for selecting the server address. Read the current syntax and examples at the Core Keeper server reference.
Change only the connection mode for a test. If you move from relay to direct, verify that the address is correct and that the chosen port is permitted by the operating system, router, and hosting network. If players cannot join, undo that one change first; do not simultaneously alter mods or world files.
A direct route can remove an unfavorable relay path, but it can also introduce firewall, carrier-grade NAT, or router configuration problems. Relay networking can be simpler for a small group, yet its route is not under your control. Keep whichever mode produces a repeatable improvement for your players and document the setting.

Decide whether host-and-play or a dedicated server fits the world
| Consideration | Host-and-play | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Who must be online | The host normally needs to run the game for others to enter. | The server process can remain online independently of a player’s game session. |
| Host PC workload | One computer renders the host’s game and handles world simulation. | A separate machine can run the server process, leaving each player’s PC to render its own client. |
| Connection control | Fewer settings and less administration. | Explicit -port, -ip, relay/direct choices, firewall rules, and address management. |
| Save and backup administration | Usually tied to the host’s local game and save routine. | Centralized save files, scheduled backups, and documented restore procedures are easier to manage. |
| Mod administration | Players can often use their normal mod workflow, but every participant still needs matching versions. | Mods must be installed and updated manually on the server as well as on every player. |
Choose host-and-play when the group is small, sessions are occasional, and the host machine is not the suspected bottleneck. Consider a dedicated server for an always-on shared world, a host whose PC is overloaded, or a group that needs independent play times. The setup documentation covers installation, save locations, backups, Docker examples, and command-line settings at this dedicated-server setup guide. A dedicated process changes where the work runs; it does not guarantee that every simulation or network problem disappears.
Install and test a dedicated server methodically
- Pick a machine that can stay available. Use a supported Windows or Linux system and compare it with the recommended requirements on the Steam support page. Avoid running the server beside a large download, backup, or other sustained workload.
- Install the official server files. The server reference documents SteamCMD installation. Keep the server files and the game clients on the same current release before inviting players.
- Choose one network mode. Start with the documented relay behavior, or configure
-portand-ipfor a direct test. Record the exact arguments and firewall changes. - Copy or select the intended save. Confirm the world opens correctly with one test player before adding the whole group. Make a backup before replacing or migrating save files.
- Test with no mods. Establish a clean server baseline, then add the known-good mod set after the unmodified world behaves normally.
- Increase load gradually. Add players one at a time and repeat the same activity near the busiest area. Stop increasing the load when the symptom first appears and record that condition.
Control mods as a strict variable
The multiplayer mod documentation states: “In general, all players (and the server) should have exactly the same mods installed.” A mismatch can produce a game-version-mismatch error or inconsistent behavior. Match both the mod list and each mod’s version; matching names alone is not sufficient.
Dedicated servers do not have mod.io integration, so their mod files must be managed manually. The dedicated-server instructions are at the dedicated-server mod guide, while the player-side multiplayer procedure is at the multiplayer mod guide.
A safe mod isolation procedure
- Record the complete installed list and versions for every player and the server.
- Back up the world before removing or updating anything.
- Disable or remove all mods and run the same short reproduction test.
- If the lag disappears, restore one mod or one tightly related group at a time.
- After each addition, repeat the identical route or base activity and note the result.
- Distribute one known-good archive or documented version list so no player silently updates a dependency.
When seeking help, include the session type (host-and-play or dedicated), game and server versions, the exact mod list, player count, location, and relevant logs. The community troubleshooting guide recommends log inspection and removing mods to isolate crashes and other failures: Core Keeper mod troubleshooting.

Keep player count and world activity realistic
The server reference documents a default maximum of eight players and warns that setting a higher maximum may require more resources or make the session unstable. Eight is a configuration default, not a promise that every world will remain smooth at that size, and a lower count can still overload a heavily automated or busy area.

Test capacity scientifically:
- Use the same world location and activity for each trial.
- Compare the full group with one or two fewer players.
- Have players spread out, then regroup, to see whether proximity to a busy base matters.
- Record whether the issue is a global freeze or a local client stutter.
- Do not raise the maximum-player setting simply because more people might join; increase it only after the current workload is stable.
If fewer players consistently remove the problem, reduce the regular group size or move the server to a machine with more headroom before changing unrelated network settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify game, server, and mod versions after updates
- Update the game clients and dedicated-server files together.
- Confirm every participant is on the same game build.
- Re-check every mod version and dependency after the update.
- Reproduce once with no mods before re-enabling the mod set.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, preserve the logs from that first failing session and compare them with a clean session.
Version checks are especially important when a player can join but interactions fail, when only one client reports an error, or when a server starts normally and then disconnects players. The troubleshooting guide’s first-line checks are version matching, log inspection, and mod isolation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse logs and a before-and-after test sheet
Logs cannot by themselves prove that a particular line caused lag, but they provide a timeline for crashes, failed connections, and mod loading. Save the server log and the affected client’s log from the same session. Mark the time of the first rubber-band, disconnect, or freeze so you can correlate entries.
| Trial | Keep constant | Change | What an improvement suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: clean baseline | World, route, players, connection mode | Nothing; close background applications and restart | The original issue may have been transient load or a stuck process. |
| B: no mods | World, route, players | Disable every mod | A mod, dependency, or version mismatch is likely. |
| C: fewer players | World, route, connection mode | Remove one or more players | Simulation or capacity pressure is implicated. |
| D: different host | World copy, route, player count | Move host responsibility | The original host machine or upload path is suspect. |
| E: connection mode | World, players, mods, host | Relay versus documented direct configuration | The route or firewall path may be influencing delay. |
| F: dedicated process | World, players, mods | Run the supported dedicated server on another machine | Separating rendering from simulation may relieve the original host, but any remaining issue needs its own test. |
Change one row’s variable at a time. If you alter the host, mods, player count, and network mode in one restart, you will not know which change helped.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Everyone rubber-bands at once
Repeat the event with fewer players and with the host’s background applications closed. Watch CPU, memory, storage, thermals, and upload activity. If the freeze occurs only in one base or biome, move away and repeat before blaming the internet. A dedicated server is worth testing when the host PC is consistently saturated, but keep the same world and mod set so the comparison is meaningful.
Best Value
Only one player stutters
Check that player’s frame rate, temperatures, local applications, Wi-Fi quality, and route to the host. Have the player join another host or use another network for one short test. If everyone else remains responsive, server-wide changes are unlikely to be the first fix.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The issue appears only with mods enabled
Disable all mods, reproduce the route, and add them back one at a time. Verify exact versions on every client and the server. Keep the logs from the first failing combination and follow the mod troubleshooting guide when reporting the issue.
The server is smooth with two players but unstable with more
Use the documented eight-player default as a ceiling to test against, not a performance guarantee. Measure the same activity at each player count, reduce the regular group size if necessary, and move the process to a machine with more resources before raising the configured maximum.
Players cannot connect after enabling direct mode
Check the selected -ip, the -port argument, operating-system firewall, router forwarding, and whether the hosting network permits inbound traffic. Revert to relay mode to confirm that the world and mods still work, then make one direct-mode correction at a time.
Frame rate is low but interactions are immediate
Treat this as a client rendering issue first. Reduce rendering load, close overlays and background applications, and inspect temperatures. Do not expect a new server or port setting to raise a single player’s frame rate.
When a dedicated server is the right next step
Move beyond host-and-play when the host’s PC is the repeatable bottleneck, the group needs an always-on world, or you need centralized save, backup, and mod administration. Start with an unmodified world, confirm the dedicated process is reachable, and then add the exact mod set and players in stages. Keep a copy of the previous save and the working command-line arguments so you can recover quickly.
Stay with host-and-play when sessions are occasional, the host has ample hardware headroom, and controlled tests show no host-specific degradation. A dedicated server adds installation, updates, firewall, save, and manual mod-management work; use it to solve an identified bottleneck rather than as a generic lag cure.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Calling every stutter “ping” without checking frame rate or whether other players are affected.
- Changing graphics, mods, ports, player limits, and hardware at the same time.
- Assuming the documented eight-player default guarantees smooth performance in every world.
- Mixing mod versions or updating one client without updating the server and other players.
- Raising the player maximum before testing the current workload.
- Opening a direct port without recording the address and firewall changes or a rollback path.
- Testing a different world or route and then treating the result as a like-for-like comparison.
- Deleting save files or mods without making a backup and preserving logs.
Bottom line
Classify the symptom, establish a clean reproduction, and change one variable per test. Check the host against Core Keeper’s recommended Windows or Linux requirements, isolate mods and versions, respect the dedicated server’s documented eight-player default, and compare relay with direct networking only through controlled trials. A dedicated server can separate rendering from world simulation and improve administration, but the evidence from your before-and-after tests—not a universal ping or bandwidth number—should determine the fix.
