Start by turning on Steam’s performance overlay and reproducing the stutter. If its cyan network-time line spikes, focus on the network; if network time stays stable, test video processing and game workload. Change one setting at a time, then compare the overlay so you can identify what actually helps on your setup.
Use the performance overlay to identify the bottleneck
Steam Remote Play sends a game stream from a host computer to a client device. Stuttering can arise along that path—from network instability, host encoding, client decoding, or the game itself—so the same fix will not work for every setup.

Enable the performance overlay in the client’s advanced streaming settings and watch it while reproducing the problem. Steam’s connectivity wizard says large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time, which commonly coincides with video stuttering or freezing. Treat that as a network clue, not proof that every other overlay result identifies a particular cause.
Depending on how you start the stream, Steam’s overlay can be enabled in Steam Link settings before streaming, in Big Picture settings after starting, or through the Steam overlay. Compare the overlay after each change rather than making several adjustments at once.

If network time spikes, reduce network strain
Wire the host PC to the router
Valve identifies wireless interference as a common cause of performance issues and recommends connecting the host computer directly to the router with Ethernet. Other wireless devices and activity can interfere with stream traffic. Pause heavy wireless use while testing, too. A wired host connection can help with interference, but it will not solve a host or client processing bottleneck.
Lower streaming quality or bandwidth
In the client’s streaming quality settings, try “Balanced” or “Fast” to reduce bandwidth use; the trade-off is lower visual quality. You can also set a bandwidth limit and adjust it gradually. Steam’s support guidance suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s, increasing until hitches appear, then backing off. That is a troubleshooting experiment, not a universal target: an appropriate limit depends on resolution, frame rate, network conditions, and other traffic.

Prioritize traffic and update the router
If your router supports quality-of-service or bandwidth-priority controls, try prioritizing the host and client. Steam also offers a “Prioritize Network Traffic” setting at Steam > Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options. Update router firmware as well; Valve notes that some routers have bugs handling Remote Play UDP traffic.

If network time is stable, test encoding and decoding
When the overlay does not point to variable network time, test the video-processing path. In the host’s Remote Play advanced options, try enabling hardware encoding. On the client, try hardware decoding. If problems continue, test disabling host hardware encoding instead. Steam’s Remote Play FAQ surfaced these as troubleshooting options, not a universal on-or-off prescription.

Change only one option at a time and compare the detailed performance overlay, including the active encoder or decoder where shown. The result can vary with the host GPU, drivers, and client device, so keep the combination that improves your stream rather than assuming hardware acceleration is always better.

Lower the game’s resolution and check whether stuttering changes. If needed, try turning off vertical sync as a separate experiment. These suggestions come from a Steam-hosted Remote Play Together FAQ by All in! Games, published in 2019. They are useful tests, not a guarantee for current Remote Play clients; lowering resolution also reduces image detail, and changing V-Sync can affect how motion is presented.

Update software and check for overheating
- Graphics drivers: If you see performance problems, graphical glitches, or black screens, install a current driver from your GPU vendor. This is a relevant check, not a proven fix for every network-related stutter.
- Ventilation: Keep the host PC and router ventilated. Steam’s suggested network settings page warns that overheating can reduce performance.
Choose changes by the symptom
| Change | Best fit | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet for the host | Network-time spikes or likely wireless interference | Requires a cable run and does not address encoding, decoding, or game load. |
| Balanced/Fast quality or a lower bandwidth limit | Network time spikes or bandwidth strain | Reduces network demand at the cost of visual quality; the useful limit varies by setup. |
| Host encoding or client decoding alternatives | Network time is stable and video processing is a possible bottleneck | Results depend on the GPU, drivers, and client; test one setting at a time. |
| Lower game resolution or test V-Sync off | Network time is stable and game workload may be contributing | Resolution trades image detail for lower workload; V-Sync changes presentation behavior. |
