Re-encode the video with a constant-quality setting, test a representative clip, and check the result before converting the full file. For 1080p, HandBrake’s version 1.6.0 documentation suggests starting at RF 20–24; that range is a starting point, not a guarantee of invisible quality loss or a particular file size. If you must meet a strict size limit, target a bitrate instead and verify the output.
Choose a setting based on your goal
Constant-quality encoding aims to maintain a chosen visual quality, so the resulting bitrate and file size vary with the footage. It is a practical starting point when appearance matters more than hitting an exact size. HandBrake says constant quality is used by default in most of its official presets and suggests RF 20–24 for 1080p Full HD in its version 1.6.0 documentation. HandBrake’s quality guide explains the control.

Moving the RF slider toward a higher number generally means lower quality and may produce a smaller file; the result depends on the source and encoder. Try a short section first. If you can see unwanted degradation, lower the RF number. If the sample looks acceptable but remains too large, raise it cautiously and compare again.
For an upload cap, email limit, or other fixed size or bandwidth constraint, use target bitrate or constrained-quality encoding rather than relying on constant quality alone. FFmpeg documents these as distinct rate-control approaches; consult the documentation for your installed build: FFmpeg documentation. A bitrate target is more directly tied to output size, but check the completed file rather than assuming it will meet the limit exactly.

Use a compatible format and codec
For broad sharing compatibility, an MP4 container with H.264 video is a conservative choice. HandBrake describes its Web presets as using the broadly compatible MP4 container. H.265 may suit a destination whose devices support it, but confirm playback on the devices that matter; the available guidance does not establish that H.265 will always create a smaller file at equal perceived quality. HandBrake’s preset documentation covers its options: HandBrake official presets.
Do not compare RF or CRF numbers across codecs as if they were equivalent quality scores. HandBrake warns that x264, x265, and SVT-AV1 use encoder-specific scales. Compare sample outputs instead of assuming the same number means the same visual result.

A safe HandBrake workflow
- Keep an untouched copy. Do not overwrite or delete the source until you have checked the compressed file.
- Load the video in HandBrake. If you need general compatibility, choose a suitable MP4 Web preset.
- Set video quality. Start around RF 20–24 for 1080p, following HandBrake’s version 1.6.0 guidance. Make a short representative encode before processing the whole video.
- Compare and adjust. Watch the sample at normal viewing size. Lower RF if the image looks worse than you can accept; if it looks good but is still too large, raise RF modestly and test again.
- Switch rate-control strategy for a hard limit. If a specific size or bitrate is mandatory, use a target bitrate or constrained-quality approach and verify the finished file against the limit.
- Check the complete output. Confirm the picture, audio, dimensions, frame rate, and container before sharing it or replacing the original.
Preserve frame rate and check the result
Keep the source frame rate unless you have a specific reason to convert it. For videos intended for YouTube, its upload guidance recommends using the frame rate at which the content was recorded and provides advice for interlaced footage: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings. That is platform guidance, not a requirement for every local video.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJudge the sample at normal viewing size, paying attention to motion, fine detail, and the parts of the clip that are hardest to encode. Check sound as well as picture. There is no dependable percentage reduction to promise for every 1080p video: the result varies with the source and encoding choices.

Quick decision guide
| Need | Approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Good visual quality without a fixed size | Constant quality; HandBrake’s 1.6.0 starting guidance for 1080p is RF 20–24. | Encode and compare a representative sample; adjust RF based on what you see. |
| A specific size or bandwidth limit | Target bitrate or constrained quality, as documented by FFmpeg. | Check the completed file’s size and playback. |
| Playback on a wide range of devices | MP4 with H.264 is the conservative choice described by the cited compatibility guidance. | Test the actual destination; use H.265 only where device support is confirmed. |
Audio bitrate is separate from video resolution: YouTube’s upload guidance does not treat audio playback bitrate as determined by resolution. Avoid changing audio settings solely because the picture is 1080p; check that the audio remains suitable after encoding.
