If your Samsung Galaxy keyboard lags, misses taps, or disappears, first check whether touch problems affect only the keyboard. Restart the phone, make Samsung Keyboard the default, close background apps, and install available updates. If the problem continues, test in Safe mode to check for conflicts with downloaded apps; reset keyboard data or seek service only when the simpler checks point that way.
First check whether the problem is the keyboard or the touchscreen
Try tapping buttons and controls in other apps. If they also miss your taps, the issue may involve the display or touch response rather than Samsung Keyboard. Samsung lists temporary system errors, outdated software, app compatibility, and physical damage among possible causes of abnormal display response. Its display guidance is general troubleshooting, not a diagnosis of keyboard problems: Samsung display troubleshooting.

If only the on-screen keyboard is affected, work through the software checks below. Settings labels and paths can vary by Galaxy model, carrier, region, and software version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Restart, select Samsung Keyboard, and reduce background load
- Restart your Galaxy. This is a simple first check for a temporary system problem.
- Choose Samsung Keyboard as the default: open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard, then select Samsung Keyboard. The menu wording may differ on your device. Samsung’s US guide provides the keyboard troubleshooting steps.
- Close recent or background apps. If your phone offers it, open Settings > Device care and tap Optimize now to reduce background load.
- Install available system updates: open Settings > Software update, then tap Download and install or Check for updates, depending on the version.
Use Safe mode to check for a downloaded-app conflict
Safe mode runs the phone without downloaded third-party apps. If the keyboard works normally there, a downloaded app may be interfering. Restart into normal mode, remove recently installed apps one at a time, and check the keyboard after each removal. Samsung’s Galaxy keyboard guidance and its lag-specific support guide describe Safe mode as a way to isolate this kind of conflict.

If the problem persists in Safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the cause. That does not by itself prove the display is damaged, but it makes a hardware or broader software issue more worth investigating.
Reset Samsung Keyboard data only if simpler checks fail
Clearing the keyboard’s data is more disruptive than restarting or updating: Samsung says it erases keyboard settings, including saved words. If you are willing to lose those settings, Samsung’s US instructions locate the app through Settings > Apps (you may need to show system apps), then use Samsung Keyboard > Force stop > Storage > Clear data. Menus can differ by device. See Samsung’s keyboard troubleshooting instructions.

If the keyboard is missing only on the lock screen
A third-party keyboard selected as the default may not appear on the lock screen, according to Samsung. Try starting the phone in Safe mode to restore access to Samsung Keyboard, then select it as the default in the keyboard settings. Samsung covers this case in its lock-screen keyboard guidance.

Arrange a Samsung-authorized inspection if the phone has visible screen damage, was dropped, misses touches in multiple apps, or still has touch or keyboard problems in Safe mode. Samsung recommends an authorized service center when a fall may have damaged the screen; physical damage can prevent normal display operation.
