The Copilot message “It’s not you, it’s me. Something went wrong. I probably just need time to refresh” is generic: it does not identify a specific fault or guarantee that Copilot is down. First find out whether the problem is limited to the Windows app, the website, Edge’s sidebar, or Microsoft 365 Copilot. Then try Microsoft’s built-in connectivity check before taking steps that could affect saved sign-ins or data.
Find out where Copilot is failing
Note which Copilot surface shows the message and whether the same account works elsewhere. Try the Copilot website in another browser or a separate browser profile; if practical, compare with another trusted network. These checks can narrow down whether the issue follows an app, browser profile, account, or network path, but they cannot by themselves prove the cause.

- Windows Copilot app: Does the website work with the same account?
- Copilot website: Does it work in another browser or profile?
- Edge sidebar: Does Copilot work on the website or in another Edge profile?
- Microsoft 365 Copilot: Does it work even when the Windows app or website does not?
In one October 2025 Microsoft Q&A case, the Edge sidebar failed while the website and mobile app worked, and another Edge account worked. An August 2026 case reported errors in Windows and web Copilot while Microsoft 365 Copilot worked. These examples show why comparing access paths is useful; neither establishes a universal cause. Check your connection and possible blockers
- Confirm that other websites load on the same device and network.
- If you use a VPN or network filter, test without it only if doing so is safe and permitted by your organization or network rules.
- If practical, try another trusted Wi-Fi network or a mobile hotspot. A different result can help distinguish a network-path issue from one isolated to an app or profile.
A Microsoft Community moderator suggested temporarily testing without a VPN and trying another network in response to a Windows app report. That is a troubleshooting suggestion, not confirmation that a VPN or network is the cause. Microsoft Q&A, June 2025
If only the Windows Copilot app fails
- Restart Windows and check for available Windows and Copilot app updates.
- If the website works but the app still fails, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Copilot, open Advanced options, and consider Repair or Reset if those options are available.
- Reinstall the app only if simpler steps do not help.
Resetting or reinstalling is suggested in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting responses, but users have also reported that these steps did not resolve the error. Before resetting, signing out, or reinstalling, consider whether you need to preserve access to saved chats or other information. The reviewed sources do not guarantee that every conversation or result will be retained through these actions. Microsoft Q&A, June 2025; Microsoft Q&A, October 2025

If Copilot fails only on the website or Edge sidebar
- Check that the browser is signed in to the Microsoft account you intend to use.
- Test in a separate browser profile. If Copilot works there, the difference may be tied to the original profile, but that does not prove profile corruption.
- If the issue is limited to one Edge profile, consider removing only relevant Copilot or Bing site cookies, or re-linking the profile, rather than clearing all browser data.
Removing site cookies can sign you out of websites. Before doing it, make sure you can sign back in and consider whether saved Copilot conversations or other site data may be affected; the cited guidance does not guarantee that clearing cookies preserves every chat. Microsoft Q&A, October 2025
