Then compare ringtone and alert playback with call audio. If only calls crackle, reception may be the cause; if the Ringtone and Alerts test is silent or the speaker control is dimmed, or the distortion persists, contact Apple or a qualified service provider.
Check settings and anything covering the speaker
- Turn off Silent mode. On an iPhone with a Ring/Silent switch, move the switch toward the display so orange is not visible. On models with an Action button, check whether it is set to Silent mode and turn Silent mode off.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb. Open Settings > Focus and check that Do Not Disturb is off.
- Remove accessories temporarily. Take off the case, screen protector, or film and test the sound again. An accessory that overlaps an opening can affect audio.
Apple’s speaker troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for blocked or dirty speaker and receiver openings. Inspect them without inserting anything into the openings. If an opening appears dirty or blocked, use a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush gently on the opening only. Do not use cleaning products or compressed air.

Test ringtone and alert sound separately from calls
Open Settings > Sounds or Settings > Sounds & Haptics, then move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth. This helps distinguish a problem with general speaker output from one that happens only during calls.
- If the ringtone and alerts sound clear, make a call and compare the receiver with speakerphone.
- If crackling or silence happens only during calls, network or reception may be responsible. Try again later or call from another location.
- If the slider produces no sound, or its speaker button is dimmed, seek service.
These checks follow Apple’s troubleshooting sequence. Menu wording can vary with iPhone model and software version.

If the sound changed after liquid exposure
Water in the speaker or microphone can temporarily make sound muffled or reduce performance until it evaporates, according to Apple’s guidance on splash, water, and dust resistance. That symptom alone does not establish permanent damage. Let the phone dry; do not use compressed air or cleaning products to try to clear the opening.

When to arrange service
Contact Apple or a qualified service provider if the Ringtone and Alerts slider is silent or its speaker button is dimmed, or if crackling, distortion, or muffled sound continues after the checks above. A service provider can assess the device; these symptoms alone do not determine the cause, repair cost, eligibility, or warranty coverage.
