Check those three things first, in that order. The steps below follow Apple’s iPadOS 26 documentation and don’t assume older versions behave the same way.
Step 1: Check which multitasking mode is selected
Open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and note the selected option. On iPadOS 26, Apple documents three setups: Windowed Apps, Stage Manager and Full Screen Apps. Selecting Full Screen Apps turns Windowed Apps off, so window gestures won’t behave as expected there. Also confirm your iPadOS version under Settings > General > About, because some features depend on a specific release. Step 2: Confirm your iPad model supports the mode
Apple publishes supported-model lists for both features on iPadOS 26. For Windowed Apps, the generations listed include iPad (8th generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later) and iPad mini (5th generation and later), along with newer models such as iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and specific iPad Air (M2 and later) and iPad Pro (M4) configurations. Match your exact model against Apple’s full list, since it is the authority on edge cases: Windowed Apps list and Stage Manager list.

Windowed Apps
- Open an app, then open a second one from the Dock, App Library or Spotlight.
- Drag the second app to the left or right edge to place it beside the first.
- To switch windows, swipe up from the bottom edge, pause in the center, lift your finger, then tap the window you want.
- In Safari or Notes, touch and hold the app icon and choose New Window to open another window of the same app.

Stage Manager
If one gesture isn’t registering, Apple documents several alternatives for switching apps:

- Tap an app in the recent-apps list or in the Dock.
- Swipe up from the bottom and pause in the center to see recent apps.
- Swipe left or right along the bottom edge with one finger. On an iPad with a Home button, Apple says to make this swipe with a slight arc.
- Swipe left or right with four or five fingers.

Slide Over
If a Slide Over window has disappeared, it was probably moved off screen. Swipe inward from the edge where you pushed it; an arrow marks its location. Apple says setting a window as Slide Over, through window controls or by dragging an app over the edge arrow, requires iPadOS 26.2 or later, so an iPad on an earlier 26.x release won’t offer it. - Touch works everywhere except one multitasking action: recheck that the action belongs to the selected mode (for example, a Stage Manager swipe while Full Screen Apps is on), and that your iPadOS version supports it.
- Touch is unreliable in all apps: that points beyond multitasking settings, and Apple’s cited pages don’t establish a cause or fix. Contact Apple Support for device-specific diagnosis rather than buying an accessory or screen protector on a guess.
