FCNR(B) is a specific Indian bank term-deposit scheme for eligible non-resident depositors; “foreign-currency fixed deposit” is only a broad product description. The two are not automatically governed by the same eligibility, rate, tax, withdrawal or deposit-protection rules. Compare the exact bank and contract—and start with the currency in which you expect to spend the money.
What is the difference between FCNR(B) and a foreign-currency fixed deposit?
FCNR(B) stands for Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank). It is an Indian scheme governed by Reserve Bank of India rules, not a generic name for any deposit held in a currency other than the local currency. Eligible non-resident Indian depositors can place funds in an FCNR(B) term deposit at a participating Indian bank. RBI rules set the permitted tenor at one to five years and do not allow recurring deposits. RBI Master Direction, sections 19–20

By contrast, a “foreign-currency fixed deposit” could mean a product at an offshore bank, a deposit in a foreign currency at a local bank, or a product under another country’s banking rules. The label alone does not establish eligibility, access to funds, repatriation rights, how the rate is set, tax treatment or protection. Those details come from the provider, account contract and governing jurisdiction.

For an Indian account comparison, an NRE term deposit is another distinct product: it is denominated in rupees, not foreign currency. RBI’s direction sets a minimum one-year tenor and limits NRE/NRO term-deposit rates to comparable domestic rupee term-deposit rates. It should not be treated as interchangeable with FCNR(B) or with an account at a foreign bank. RBI Master Direction, sections 15 and 19

How should you compare the return?
Do not compare headline rates without checking the currency, tenor, interest-payment method and conditions attached to the offer. RBI’s current direction caps FCNR(B) rates by reference to the relevant currency’s Overnight Alternative Reference Rate or swap reference. The ceilings are the benchmark plus 250 basis points for deposits of one to less than three years, and plus 350 basis points for deposits of three to five years. These are regulatory ceilings—not promised customer rates or forecasts. A bank’s actual offer can be lower, so verify the current rate for the currency, amount and term you are considering. RBI Master Direction, section 19
RBI says FCNR(B) interest is calculated on a 360-day year basis, at 180-day intervals and then for the remaining actual days. A depositor may opt to receive interest at maturity with compounding. Compare the effective amount payable under the option you would actually choose, not just the advertised annual rate. RBI Master Direction, section 20

- Include any account, transfer, conversion or repatriation charges that apply to your route for moving or using the funds.
- Read the early-withdrawal terms before treating the quoted rate as the return you are likely to realize.
Which currency risk matters most?
The relevant risk is the relationship between the deposit currency and the currency of your future expenses. If you hold a USD deposit but later need INR, the INR amount you receive will depend on the USD/INR exchange rate when you convert. It may be higher or lower than expected. The same issue arises when the deposit and spending currencies differ in another currency pair.
If your planned expenses are in the same currency as the deposit, the currency denomination better matches that particular liability. It does not remove bank credit risk, inflation risk or the possibility that you will need to convert the funds for some other expense. Currency matching is a way to understand exposure, not a prediction of exchange rates. RBI FCNR(B) scheme text
What happens if you need the money early?
FCNR(B) deposits may be withdrawn early, but the timing affects interest. Under RBI rules, withdrawing before completing the minimum one-year tenor means no interest is payable. For other early withdrawals, the bank’s policy governs penalties, which must be disclosed. Check the selected bank’s penalty schedule and whether it can recover swap costs before relying on the stated rate. RBI Master Direction, sections 25–26
Other foreign-currency deposits can have different notice periods, penalties or restrictions; there is no universal rule established by that product label. For any deposit, make sure the contract answers how quickly you can access principal, what interest you forfeit and what fees or deductions may apply.

How does Indian tax treatment differ from deposit protection?
The Income Tax Department’s non-resident FAQ describes FCNR interest as exempt under the Indian provisions it covers. It describes the NRE interest exemption as conditional on the account holder being a person resident outside India under FEMA or being permitted by RBI. These statements do not decide a depositor’s tax liability in another country, and individual tax residence and the applicable tax year matter. The department says the Income Tax Act, 2025 applies prospectively to tax years beginning on or after 1 April 2026; check the rules that apply to your circumstances and tax year. What should you verify before choosing?
- Identify the product and jurisdiction. Confirm whether the account is specifically an FCNR(B) deposit, another Indian deposit, or a product governed by another country’s rules.
- Confirm eligibility and access. Ask who can open the account, the permitted tenor, early-withdrawal conditions and any repatriation or transfer restrictions.
- Match currency to your intended use. Estimate how and when you may need to convert the proceeds, and account for the risk that the exchange rate can move against you.
- Calculate the offer’s effective outcome. Compare the rate, tenor, interest timing or compounding, fees and penalties using the bank’s written terms for your amount and currency.
- Check tax for your own circumstances. Establish your tax residence and the rules applicable for the relevant tax year in every country where you may have tax obligations.
- Verify protection independently. Consult the official deposit-insurance authority for the bank’s jurisdiction and confirm that your bank, account and depositor category qualify.
