How to Fix Intel HD Graphics Driver Problems After a Windows 10 Update

Learn how to identify Intel graphics driver failures, roll back an update, reinstall the correct OEM or Intel package, perform a clean removal, and recover from Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Intel HD Graphics stopped working after a Windows 10 update, first identify the adapter and installed driver in Device Manager. Then try a rollback if the update caused the failure; otherwise install the correct package from your computer maker or Intel. A clean reinstall is the next step for corruption, failed installations, or repeated driver conflicts. Seeing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter usually means Windows has fallen back to a generic driver, not that the GPU has physically failed.

What an update-related Intel graphics problem looks like

A Windows update can replace a working Intel graphics package, leave an incomplete installation, or expose a compatibility problem with an OEM-customized laptop or desktop. Typical symptoms include a black screen after sign-in, flickering, a sudden change in resolution, missing brightness controls, poor video playback, disabled external monitors, or an Intel adapter that no longer appears under its usual name.

Open Device Manager before changing anything. Press Windows logo key + X, choose Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. You may see an Intel HD/UHD Graphics entry, Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or Standard VGA Adapter. The two generic names indicate that Windows is using a fallback driver with limited capabilities. Microsoft specifically notes that the fallback may not support multiple monitors and can provide poorer playback performance. It is evidence that the proper Intel package is not active; it is not, by itself, proof of a failed graphics chip.

Record the current hardware and driver state

Write down the exact adapter name, the driver date and version, and any warning symbol before uninstalling or rolling back. This information tells you which package to obtain and gives you a comparison point after the repair.

  2. On the General tab, read the device status and any Windows error code.
  3. Open the Driver tab and record Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
  4. Use the Details tab and select Hardware Ids if the adapter name is generic or ambiguous. Copy the values somewhere safe.
  5. Note whether the problem started immediately after a particular Windows update and whether the previous driver worked normally.

If Display adapters is missing entirely, select View > Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Also check Other devices for an unknown display controller. Do not install a random package based only on a similar product name; Intel graphics generations and OEM variants can require different packages.

Choose the right driver source

Start with the computer manufacturer for laptops and branded desktops

Intel explains that manufacturers can customize graphics features, power behavior, and packaging. For a laptop or a branded desktop, open the manufacturer’s support page, enter the exact model or serial number, and look for the Windows 10 graphics package that matches your system. This package is usually the safest compatibility choice for special display switching, hotkeys, docking support, and power profiles.

Compare the manufacturer’s package with the driver version you recorded. If the support page offers several Windows 10 packages, use the one whose supported operating system, processor family, and release notes match your machine. Do not assume that the newest generic Intel package is automatically suitable for an OEM system.

Use Intel’s package when an OEM package is unavailable

If the manufacturer no longer provides a suitable Windows 10 driver, identify the processor and graphics product with Intel’s identification instructions, then use Intel Download Center to select the matching package. Confirm the operating-system edition and processor generation before downloading. Save the installer locally before removing the current driver so that you are not left without a recovery package.

Keep the installer for the version you intend to use and, if possible, the previous working package as well. A correct package is more important than simply choosing the latest date.

Try the non-destructive display reset first

For a flickering screen or a driver that appears stuck, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft documents this shortcut as a graphics-driver reset. The screen may blink or go briefly dark and Windows may play a short alert sound. Give it a few seconds, then test the display, brightness control, video playback, and any external monitor.

Roll back when the Windows update triggered the regression

Rollback is the least disruptive branch when the previous driver worked and the failure began directly after Windows Update. Windows can offer the earlier package from its driver store, but the option is unavailable if no usable previous version remains.

  1. Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
  2. Right-click the Intel adapter and select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver.
  4. Select a reason when Windows asks, confirm, and restart the computer.
  5. Return to the same Driver tab and verify that the earlier version is installed. Test the applications and monitors that failed.

If Roll Back Driver is greyed out, Windows no longer has a rollback package. Do not delete the current driver just to make rollback appear; use the normal reinstall path with the OEM or Intel installer you downloaded.

Reinstall the driver normally

A normal reinstall is appropriate when the driver is present but malfunctioning, or when rollback is unavailable and there is no evidence that the installation is deeply corrupted.

  1. Close graphics-intensive applications and connect the computer to AC power.
  2. Run the OEM or Intel installer that matches the recorded hardware and Windows edition.
  3. Accept the installer’s defaults unless the package documentation specifies another choice. Allow the screen to blink during installation.
  4. Restart when prompted, even if the installer says a restart is optional.
  5. Open Device Manager again and compare the displayed provider and version with the package you intended to install.

After the restart, test the native resolution, brightness controls, sleep and wake, video playback, external displays, and any application that previously crashed. If Windows immediately replaces the package or the installer reports that components are already present, proceed to a clean installation.

Perform a clean installation for corruption or repeated failure

Intel describes a clean installation as removing old drivers and restoring Intel settings to their defaults. Use it when the installer fails, version remnants conflict, the adapter repeatedly disappears, or a normal reinstall leaves the same symptoms. A clean install can reset custom Intel graphics settings, so note any color, scaling, or multi-display preferences first.

Use the installer’s clean-install option

  1. Keep the correct OEM or Intel installer available locally.
  2. Start the installer and look for an clean installation checkbox or equivalent advanced option. The wording varies by package.
  3. Select the clean-install option, continue through the prompts, and allow the system to restart.
  4. After Windows loads, verify the driver version in Device Manager and reapply only the display settings you actually need.

Use manual Device Manager removal when the option is missing

If the installer does not provide a clean-install control or the option fails, Intel documents a manual removal route. Download the replacement package first, then disconnect the computer from the internet temporarily. Disconnecting prevents Windows Update from inserting a generic or different driver while you are removing the old one.

  1. Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
  2. Right-click the Intel adapter and choose Uninstall device.
  3. In the confirmation dialog, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device or the similarly worded option to delete the driver software.
  4. Confirm the removal and restart. The adapter may temporarily appear as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Adapter; that is expected while no Intel package is active.
  5. With the internet still disconnected, run the saved OEM or Intel installer.
  6. Restart again, reconnect the internet, and verify the installed version in Device Manager.

If the uninstall dialog does not offer a driver-deletion option, Windows may be retaining the package in its driver store. Continue with the installer’s clean-install process or the remnants procedure below rather than repeatedly uninstalling the device.

Remove persistent installation remnants

Intel’s current graphics installation and uninstallation guidance covers cases in which portions of an old graphics package remain after an uninstall. Those remnants can make a new installer detect conflicting components or silently preserve the original fault. Intel recommends using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) for this situation, followed by installation of the desired graphics driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download and stage the correct OEM or Intel graphics package before beginning.
  2. Disconnect from the internet so Windows Update cannot add a driver during cleanup.
  3. Follow Intel’s specified DDU sequence, including the requested restart into the cleanup environment and the cleanup action for the graphics driver.
  4. Reboot as directed by the procedure.
  5. Install the staged graphics package, restart, reconnect the internet, and check Device Manager for the intended version.

DDU is a more invasive cleanup than rollback or a normal reinstall. Use it when the simpler paths fail, and follow the current Intel sequence rather than mixing steps from unrelated cleanup guides.

What to do when the Intel adapter is still missing

Microsoft Basic Display Adapter remains after installation

Confirm that the installer completed without an error and that you restarted. In Device Manager, check the adapter’s Driver Provider and Version. If it still shows the generic Microsoft provider, the package may not match the hardware, the installation may have been blocked, or Windows may have replaced it. Recheck the processor and graphics identification, prefer the OEM package, disconnect from the internet, and repeat the clean-install path.

The display adapter is not listed at all

Use View > Show hidden devices and inspect Other devices for an unknown display controller. Recheck the exact model and hardware IDs you recorded. If the device remains absent after a correct package and restart, check the computer maker’s firmware and chipset guidance before assuming the GPU itself has failed. The driver procedures cannot install a package for the wrong hardware.

A warning code returns

Read the complete message on the Device Manager General tab and note whether it appeared before or after the reinstall. A repeated warning after a verified, matching package points toward an OEM compatibility issue, a Windows component problem, or hardware that needs manufacturer service. Preserve the driver version and the exact code for the manufacturer’s support technician.

Use the symptoms to choose between rollback and clean reinstall

Decision Roll back Clean reinstall
Best trigger Failure began immediately after an update and the prior driver was functional Corruption, failed installer, missing adapter, or repeated version conflicts
Data and settings impact Lower; restores an earlier package Removes old driver files and resets Intel settings to defaults
Main prerequisite A previous driver package remains available and Device Manager offers rollback Correct OEM or Intel package downloaded before removal
Verification Confirm the earlier version and test the display Confirm the newly installed version in Device Manager

Choose one branch based on the trigger rather than performing every procedure in sequence. Starting with rollback preserves more of your existing configuration. Escalate to a clean install when rollback is unavailable or when the installation itself is clearly damaged.

Prevent Windows Update from immediately undoing the repair

Once the correct driver is working, record its version and the date you installed it. If Windows Update offers a newer display driver and the same problem returns after installation, use Device Manager to roll back while you obtain the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not remove a functioning OEM package merely because a generic Intel package has a newer version number.

Keep the installer that worked and a copy of your hardware identification. This makes recovery possible even when the computer temporarily has only the generic display driver. Before major Windows updates, save important work and note any custom Intel display settings because a clean installation can restore defaults.

Windows 10 support status and what it means for drivers

Microsoft Support lists October 14, 2025 as the end of Windows 10 support. In 2026, that means driver availability, security fixes, and Windows Update behavior are time-sensitive. A manufacturer may stop publishing new Windows 10 graphics packages even while hardware remains functional, and Intel’s current package may target a newer Windows release first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the newest package explicitly offered for your exact computer and Windows edition rather than assuming that every future Intel release will support Windows 10. If your system supports a supported Windows version, moving to it can provide a more current driver path; make that decision only after checking the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements and backing up your data.

Final verification checklist

  • Device Manager lists the intended Intel graphics product, not Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Adapter.
  • The Driver tab shows the provider, date, and version you expected from the OEM or Intel package.
  • No warning symbol or unexplained status code remains.
  • Native resolution, brightness, sleep and wake, video playback, and external monitors work.
  • The application that exposed the problem runs normally.
  • Your installer and hardware details are saved for the next recovery.

If all six checks pass, the update-related driver problem is resolved. If one fails, return to the specific branch above instead of repeatedly installing unrelated versions.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card, followed by a subscription.
