To reduce input lag or stuttering in a PC action game, first identify which symptom you have: delayed controls, uneven motion, or both. Then test one setting at a time in the same game and scene. Start with Windows’ display refresh rate, then check Windows 11 windowed-game settings, your GPU’s latency feature, and display sync options. These settings depend on your hardware and game, so no single change is a guaranteed fix.
Identify what feels wrong before changing settings
“Lag” can describe several different problems. Separating them helps you test the right fix instead of changing graphics settings at random.

- Input lag: your control responds later than you expect—for example, a turn begins after you move the mouse or a jump happens after you press the key.
- Stuttering: motion is uneven, with brief hitches or jumps even when the game is otherwise responsive.
- Both: controls feel delayed and the image hitches. Frame delivery and input response can affect the same moment of play, but they are distinct symptoms.
- Online lag: other players or the game world update late or inconsistently. The settings below address local PC graphics and display behavior; they do not diagnose network delay.
Before changing anything, play the scene where the problem is easiest to notice. Note whether the issue affects controls, motion, or both, and whether it happens in one game or several. Change one setting at a time and return to that same scene to compare.

A display refreshes its image at a set rate. A higher rate can make motion and interaction feel more responsive when both the display and connection support it, but available rates depend on the device. Microsoft notes that the benefit depends on the content and display capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Choose the connected display, if Windows lists more than one.
- Under the refresh-rate control, select a rate offered for that display.
- Re-test the same game scene. If the problem is unchanged, continue to the settings that match your game mode and GPU.
Do not assume a refresh rate is available just because a monitor advertises it: Windows only offers rates supported by the display and its connection.
Test Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization
Windows 11 has an Optimizations for windowed games setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in a window or borderless window. It is a targeted test, not a system-wide cure for every game or kind of stutter.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default settings.
- Find Optimizations for windowed games and test the setting for a compatible title played windowed or borderless.
- Restart the game after changing the setting, then compare the same scene.
If your PC has more than one GPU, use the per-game graphics preference on the Graphics page to check which GPU Windows assigns to the game. A high-performance preference can be relevant on multi-GPU systems; it is not a general latency switch.

Choose the latency option supported by your GPU and game
GPU vendors offer latency features that depend on hardware and game support. Use the relevant option if it is available, rather than enabling several unrelated settings in the hope that they stack.

NVIDIA: check for Reflex first
If the game has an NVIDIA Reflex option, test it in the game’s settings. Reflex support is game-specific. If the game does not support Reflex, NVIDIA identifies its driver-level Ultra Low Latency mode as an alternative. Reflex overrides the driver functionality when both are enabled, so enabling both does not provide an additive benefit.
AMD: test Anti-Lag where supported
On supported AMD hardware and games, test Anti-Lag in the game’s profile or global graphics settings. AMD describes it as adjusting frame timing to reduce input-to-response delay and says it works best when the GPU is the limiting factor. Support varies by hardware, game, API, and software version.

Compare sync settings if motion still tears or stutters
Synchronization settings affect how the game’s frames and display refresh work together. The tradeoff depends on the display, frame rate, and which symptom you are trying to improve.
- VSync: can reduce tearing, but NVIDIA describes stutter when VSync behavior meets frame rates below the refresh cap.
- Adaptive sync: AMD FreeSync matches the display’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate to address stutter and tearing on compatible setups.
Test sync options that your display and game support one at a time. Compare them in the same scene, paying attention to tearing, smoothness, and control response. Neither VSync nor adaptive sync is universally best for every display or frame-rate pattern.
If the problem persists
If the same symptom remains after these targeted tests, consult support guidance for the specific game and hardware. The settings covered here do not establish a universal fix for every cause of persistent stutter or delay, including shader-compilation stalls, overheating, memory pressure, network problems, or a failing component. Those require diagnosis suited to the title, PC, and symptom.
