On Samsung Galaxy phones, Accidental touch protection is designed to prevent unintended screen input in dark places such as a pocket or bag. Samsung does not publish a feature-specific battery measurement, so there is no reliable percentage to cite—and no basis to promise zero battery use. If the protection screen appears when you need the phone, swipe its lock icon left or right to dismiss it.
Does Accidental touch protection drain battery?
Samsung says the proximity sensor operates for Accidental touch protection on some models in low light. Its support documentation does not quantify the feature’s battery use or establish that it causes noticeable drain. A sensor being active does not, by itself, show that the effect on battery life is practically significant.

On certain Galaxy models with an under-display sensor, Samsung describes the relevant low-light condition as 10 lux or less. That is a technical threshold for sensor behavior, not a battery statistic. Some listed models may also show a tiny flicker of light in low-light conditions while the sensor operates; Samsung describes this as expected behavior. Can it block normal use?
It can put a protection screen over the display when the phone is in a dark place, which may interrupt use until you dismiss it. Samsung’s US instructions say to swipe the lock icon to the left or right. Samsung’s instructions for Accidental touch protection

Samsung Canada notes that the screen may still light briefly if the device senses movement or contact, even when protection is on. That does not necessarily mean the feature has failed: its purpose is to reduce unintended screen input, not guarantee that the display never wakes. What to check if your Galaxy wakes or responds in a pocket
If the screen wakes in a pocket or bag, Samsung recommends checking more than Accidental touch protection. Menu names and availability can differ by Galaxy model, region, and software version.

- Dismiss the protection screen when you need the phone. Swipe the lock icon left or right.
- Check wake gestures. Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures, then turn off Lift to wake or Double tap to wake if you do not want those gestures to wake the screen.
- Review touch sensitivity and protection. If unwanted touches continue, check Touch sensitivity under Settings > Display and disable it if appropriate. Samsung also suggests enabling Accidental touch protection in Display. These paths may differ on your device.
- If you use a Galaxy Z Flip, check the fingerprint setting. Samsung says Fingerprint always on can be turned off or adjusted if accidental fingerprint contact is causing problems.

If the protection screen is the only inconvenience, leave the feature on and swipe the lock icon when you need to use the phone in a dark place. If your phone repeatedly responds to contact in a pocket, first review wake gestures and touch sensitivity rather than assuming Accidental touch protection is the cause. Samsung says the feature is enabled by default on most Galaxy phones in its Canada guidance, but availability and settings vary. A compatible flip-cover or wallet-style case for your specific Galaxy model may also help keep the screen dark in a pocket or bag. Samsung Canada’s guidance
