How to Fix Incorrect Author Details in Structured Data

Find where your CMS, plugin or theme emits the wrong author, correct the Person or Organization objects, then validate and inspect in Search Console.

To fix a wrong author in structured data, compare the byline readers see with the rendered Article, NewsArticle or BlogPosting markup. Then correct the value at the system that generates it: the CMS author record, a plugin setting, the theme, or a custom schema template. Finally, validate the output, deploy it, and check how Google sees the page. Editing the markup by hand on one page will not help if a template re-emits the bad value on every other page.

What Google expects from author markup

Google’s Article structured data documentation sets the rules that most author errors break:

  • Match the page. Google says: “Make sure that all the authors that are presented as authors on the web page are also included in markup.”
  • One entry per author. Put each coauthor in a separate author object. Do not join names into one author.name string.
  • Correct type. Use Person for an individual and Organization for an organizational author.
  • Name only. Keep author.name to the name. Use jobTitle, honorificPrefix or honorificSuffix for those details, and put the publisher’s name under publisher.
  • Identifying link. A valid url or sameAs helps distinguish one author from others with similar names.

Step 1: Inspect the rendered page

Compare the visible byline with the structured data in the rendered page, not just the source in your editor. Look for:

  • A stale or former author name.
  • A generic organization (the site name, for example) where a person is credited.
  • The wrong @type.
  • Several authors merged into one string, or coauthors missing.
  • Invalid or broken author URLs.
  • Text in author.name that is not a name, such as a title or “Staff, Example Co.”

Step 2: Find what emits the markup

The fix belongs wherever the value originates. Trace the wrong value to one of these:

  • The CMS author record. Check the user or author profile attached to the post, including display name and the post’s assigned author.
  • A plugin or SEO module. Review its schema or article settings, which may set a default author or override the post’s author.
  • The theme. Themes sometimes hard-code JSON-LD in templates.
  • A custom schema template. Fix the template once and the change applies across all pages that use it.

Menu names vary by platform, and Google’s general documentation gives no platform-specific steps. Google’s guidance advises involving your CMS provider if one manages the site. Editing an unrelated author profile page will not change a value still emitted on the article itself. A CMS-integrated plugin can make structured data easier to add, per Google, but verify the generated output after any settings change rather than assuming it fixed the field.

Step 3: Correct the author objects

For several authors, use an array with one object each. This is a conceptual example; replace the names and URLs with real data from the page:

"author": [
  {
    "@type": "Person",
    "name": "Avery Example",
    "url": "https://example.com/staff/avery-example"
  },
  {
    "@type": "Person",
    "name": "Jordan Example",
    "url": "https://example.com/staff/jordan-example"
  }
]

These sample names and URL are placeholders, not real author data. After editing, confirm the visible byline and markup still agree.

Author profile pages

If the author URL points to an internal bio page, Google recommends marking that page up with ProfilePage structured data. The URL should uniquely identify the author, and both url and sameAs can help disambiguate.

Step 4: Validate, deploy and check Google’s view

  1. Run the page through the Rich Results Test and fix critical errors.
  2. Deploy to a few pages first.
  3. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to see how Google reads each page.
  4. Request a recrawl where appropriate, keep the pages crawlable, and update your sitemap.
  5. Wait. Google says recrawling can take several days, with no fixed duration, and that valid markup does not guarantee a rich result.

If the problem persists

  • Search Console reports errors. Open the relevant structured data error or unparsable structured data report.
  • A manual action exists. Check the Manual Actions report. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says structured data under a manual action may be ignored, though the page can remain in Search results.
  • Syntax is valid but the issue remains. Review Google’s content and markup quality guidelines. Mismatch with page content or spam-like markup can be the cause rather than syntax.

Choosing where to fix it

Origin of wrong value Fix scope What to verify
Author record All posts by that author Correct name, profile URL, post assignment
Plugin setting Site-wide or per content type Default-author overrides, Person vs Organization
Theme or custom template Every page using the template Arrays for coauthors, no hard-coded names
Single page edit One page only That it is not regenerated by a template later

Whichever route you take, finish by confirming that the page passes validation, is crawlable, and shows the same authors in markup as in the byline.
